Fellow genealogists and anyone concerned with preserving our sacred cemeteries, The History Channel and Time Warner are sponsoring a 'Save Our History' grant award for which anyone can go online and cast their vote. Voting ends THIS FRIDAY April 27th, so time is short. We were fortunate that our restoration project was chosen as a finalist. The JCOGS is the only genealogy society or cemetery project to be chosen as one of the five finalists, so I truly hope that you will go to the Time Warner website and cast your vote for the James Cemetery project. If awarded this grant, we will use 100% of the grant to begin installing an antique-style aluminum alloy fence around the perimeter in order to help halt further desecration of this sacred and historic burial ground. You can read more about our James Cemetery project at the Time Warner 'Save Our History' voting website. Please unite with us as a group of genealogists concerned about the ever-increasing destruction of our cemeteries by VOTING for us at the website below. And note also that ANYONE with Internet access can VOTE so please forward this email to your genealogy circle of friends and ask THEM to vote too! Well, finally we have gotten back there to the Dunkirk Cemetery. I am so glad we had a guide, as the cemetery was in the woods that I had ventured into in January. I was so close and couldn't see it. I mostly took video, but a few pictures and Jennifer Capps took other pictures and will be send them to me when she gets home. It is amazing the condition it is in for being neglected for so long but at the same time it is in very sad shape. Many are laying flat on the ground being grown over, some you don't see them until you walk on them. Many are up against trees. There is a fence, that is falling down, and there is an old open gate to it as well. It is pretty back there lots of wildflowers and some planted by loved ones of long ago. At least 5 new wild flowers in there that I had not seen before. I will put my video together and post it to a web-site that I can create to share such a thing. I will let you know the address once done. Andrea
I was running late to a meeting this morning, and spotted a building that looked like a school house or church out of the corner of my eye. I had not noticed it before, maybe because the trees have not leafed out just yet, and I don't get up this way very often so I saw it. And since I was already running late thanks to a flat, I took off on 100 East going south of IN 28, and stopped and took pictures of it. I added them to my photo album in a little bit so all can see them. Blowing up the last picture I read 1891, District No. 5, A.B. Wall, Trustee. It is on the corner of 100 East and 700 North, south east of Deerfield, does anyone know this school by any other name? This school would of been used before the school consolidation in the township I think. I had thought it was a school house when I was on 28, but when I got up to it, I thought it was an old church, but the sign gives a different answer. She is my 95 year old aunt who resides at the Winchester Nursing Home. She and my mother lived on a farm near there and went to church in the town. She had an Uncle and Aunt who ran the grocery store. Anyway she probably has a lot of memories she could relate to you. She is Helen Reeves and although she has trouble seeing, she has no trouble remembering things from the past. Hopefully this will be of some help to you. I was at a gathering today, and some talking went towards grandparents moving to this area way back when type of thing. Anyway, I was told about a large building that was used as an apartment building I would guess 30 - 40 years ago, when her grandmother lived there. One day they decided to remove some of the wall paper and found that the building had once been the White Horse Saloon. Does anyone have more information about that? I'm just curious about it. It was on the Ohio side of Union City, don't really have a grasp of where though. Andrea

Hello, I don't see a Rebecca Slick married to an Isaac Phillips or a Claude Slick, but I do have a few Rebecca Slicks on my site who lack spouses. I'll give you the link to the page with my Slicks, so you can see if you find a link. It seems likely that all of the Slicks were related who lived in and around Randolph Co., Indiana. I haven't done a great deal of research yet on the extended family. I know that some of them lived in Darke County, Ohio before they moved to Randolph. Please tell me if you find any connections. In our data base, we have an Elizabeth Slick (possibly Fleck) b. Abt 1838 in Ohio) m. to Isaac Phillips and a Claude Slick m. to a Abbie Zigler or Ziegler. All of these individuals were from the area in Jay and Randolph, IN areas and the Darke, Oh area right across the border. Would any of these names tie in with the ones you have?
