    2. Billy J. Baker
    3. Union City Times-Gazette, Thursday, October, 11, 1945 Mrs. Margaret Smith Will Be Ninety-Three On Sunday, Oct. 14. Mrs. Margaret Smith, a well-known Union City lady, will observe her ninety-third birthday anniversary on Sunday, October 14. Mrs. Smith makes her home with two of her daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Fowler and Mrs. Margaret Hillis on the Fowler farm directly south of the city on the State Line road. Mrs. Smith came to this country from Scotland sixty-nine years ago, was married to W. R. Smith, a machinist of this city, and has resided in this community since that time. They became the parents of ten children, four of whom are deceased. Besides the two daughters named there are two other daughters, Mrs. Bert Davis, of near this city, and Mrs. Agnes Smith of Coshocton, Ohio; and two sons, Dr. John M. Smith, professor at Smith College at North Hampton, Mass., and James Smith, a teacher at the Technical School of Mechanical Engineering at Memphis, Tenn. There are also ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The husband and father died 39 years ago. The aged lady has received her second eyesight and reports that she enjoys reading the daily papers and letters from her family and friends. [Margaret Masson Smith lived on to the age of 106 years. She is buried in the Union City Cemetery beside her husband William R. Smith (1845 - April 1, 1906). She was born in Scotland October 14, 1852 and died in Randolph County, IN on December 22, 1958.]

    3. Joan & All Members I posted the message to the list as a hot topic to "READ" about over the weekend. I did not say "discuss" on the email list. But since you wanted to comment on list on how you thought it was not appropriate and should not be on the email list, I will answer you on list so that all the members will know how I, as the moderator stand on the topic of what is or is not appropriate on the list. I don't want any of the new list members to be afraid to post a message they feel is relevant, in fear of upsetting someone else on the list. All members have a right to share anything they feel is worth mentioning about Genealogy and History to the list. New ways to research, helpful tips or like the Ancestry.com issue. I think it is great when a post is made on new records available, free viewings or even news paper articles that mention things going on in the area. If we don't share these sort of things how are we to know what is going on? If someone wouldn't have passed on the information about the changes NARA made I would have been in the dark about their fees changing. NARA is not "Randolph County" but it does pertain to Genealogy and it was a very important issue. I don't even mind DNA discussions on the list unlike some moderators. I made it clear in the subject line what my post was about. As I have said on more than one occasion, when someone posts something that is not of interest to you, then by all means use your delete button. The Randolph County Email list has over 200+ members. There is no way that every post is going to be one that everyone wants to read or feels is "appropriate". The diversity of this list is what has made the Randolph County list so great, there is usually something for everyone here and it has been an open and friendly environment. I too am a paying member to Ancestry.com and I use the site often and have for years. I am not attempting "an all out attempt" to take them down. I love Ancestry.com but I don't agree with some of their tactics. Nor do I feel that all the work that me or the other volunteers have completed is our "private" property. If I felt that way I would not spend my time and money volunteering on the websites making it available for free. As for the relevance to this email list, I say again, it is for Genealogy and History for Randolph County and a place to share tips and ideas for researching. The issue does pertain to genealogy and genealogy records and the ability to access them. It also brings up the question of copywrite which has frequently been an issue for researchers who want to share records with the websites. As moderator of this list, I felt it was worth sharing and as I said in my first message I think it is very important for all of us researchers to keep up on what is happening in the Genealogy world and how it may affect our ability to access information. With all that said I hope everyone understands I was not trying to get a huge debate started on list, I was just passing along information. As with all posts do with as you please, read it or delete it. For all others who don't like the read or delete function there are directions located at the bottom of each post explaining how to avoid the posts from being delivered to your email address. <G> Have a great and safe Labor Day! 3. I am a paying member of Ancestry.com. Over the years I have had much success in learning about my family. For research purposes, this site has surpassed going directly to the library, visiting the locale, writing letters, and searching all other internet sites. So, I have a a few thoughts before we try an all out effort to bring this site down. 1) We need to consider when is a copyright notice not really valid. A discussion of copyrights really belongs elsewhere. 2) I know that many of us spend a lot of time and money gathering information that is in the public domain (over the many years, I have spent a great deal of time and money on this hobby), but we need to recognize the fact that this does not make the information we gather our "private" property. 3) I hate to say this, but this topic has no place on this discussion board.

    3. Gina, I have not read about this already, so thank you for letting us know. Cathy Lampshire ________________________________ From: [email protected] on behalf of Gina Richardson Sent: Sat 9/1/2007 9:27 AM To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: [INRANDOL] Genealogy Heated Debate Hello everyone, I figured I would give you all a hot topic to read about over the Labor Day weekend. There has been a heated discussion on the USGenWeb Project email lists and other not for profit Genealogy Groups about Ancestry.com. I wanted to pass the information along to you in case you were not aware of the issue. I think all who are researching their history should know what is going on and be able to voice their opinion to Ancestry.com. It seems that Ancestry.com went through the internet searching and spidering websites and cached pages that had to do with Genealogy. Cached as in stored copies of the websites on their server. They removed the headers and footers and put their Ancestry.com header on the pages and then offered the database to their pay per view members. When the headers and footers were stripped it removed the information about who created the pages and the copywrite or any way to contact the person who supplied the information. They didn't ask permission to copy the pages and they took pages that were from not for profit groups who work and spend their own time and money to provide free websites for researchers and put it on a pay site. It was not a list of links to the actual sites but a copy of it. Another reason it is bothering the Genealogy groups that were cached is that they have been buying out all the other companies. They now own Rootsweb (who sponsors most of the USGenWeb) , Genealogy.com, Family Tree Maker, and others. The concern is that our free sites will be made pay per view. It caused an uproar and now they have pulled the database from the pay site and made it free. Their reason for copying the pages was to "preserve" the pages for the future. I can see some reasoning to this, if a page is created and the creator removes it or passes away, the page is no longer available, but the cached page would still be there for future researchers. It is on the free side of the site but you must still register and create a name and password to access it. That is a problem to some people too, you shouldn't have to register and give personal information to view a site that was created for free viewing. Ancestry spamming and selling your information to third parties after you register is another topic that is in question. Personally my first reaction to this was..... Ancestry smacks their logo and copywrite on all their images and has a whole page on their site about copywrites and lawsuits if you reproduce their pages and then they went and did the same thing to all the smaller organizations and then tried to make a buck off of it. <G> The links below will take you to the different articles about the whole ordeal if you would like to read more about what is happening. You can also do a search for articles, I typed in "Ancestry.com cached pages" and came up with several hits. I think it is important for all of us to keep up on issues that may affect the way we research not only with these different websites but with laws that pertain to public records and who has the right to access them. http://blogs.ancestry.com/circle/?p=1785 http://blogs.ancestry.com/circle/ http://genealogy.about.com/b/a/255997.htm http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2007/08/internet-biog-1.html I hope everyone has a wonderful Labor Day! 3. It might be the Pleasant Hill Church and Cemetery in Jackson Township, and if so, then I should have a picture of it if I backed that file up. I will look and let you know. The church is still very active and is in the most north eastern corner of the county, they have two cemeteries, old and new, I photographed the old one a few years ago. The Sunday School Class in the 1950s-60s did a cleanup and fix of the old cemetery and wrote a transcription booklet about it. I had made plans to get a copy of it, but have not gotten that done yet. I will see about getting a copy of the book soon. Andrea Long (there is also Mt. Pleasant Cemetery ((aka SnowHill, which Greg Hinshaw told me today was a Quaker Meeting at one point, I photographed this cemetery last spring)) and there is also Pleasant Ridge, but I doubt this is the one you are wanting) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]]On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Saturday, September 01, 2007 1:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [INRANDOL] cemetery look-up My name is Bill Duchek and I live in San Diego, CA. 3. Hi Rex: Thanks, once more, for helping me out. Your info led me to the following for the Reynard family: Adam Reynard born in 1764 in Germany married Catherine Stover. They had 15 children, one of whom was Jeremiah born 1789 Franklin, VA/or Pennsylvania. He married Sarah Howell. Their son Nathan married Eliza Ann Griffin and their son, Granville was the subject of the posting on the Reynard family in "Portrait & Biographical Record, Randolph County, IN" by A. W. Bowen that Ida Anderson shared with the list. Another son of Adam & Catherine was Solomon born 1798 married to Rachel Green. Their son was Isaac born 1821 who married Lydia Barker and their son was the Jesse C. Reynard you found on the census records who married a Keys family member that ties back to my husband's line. Another son of Solomon & Rachel Green was Jesse who married Anna Diggs. Their son, Thomas C. has been the topic of the most recent postings on the list. From what I could gather, he was born October 26, 1848 in White River Township, served in the Civil War for the Union from 11/26/1864 to 7/19/1865 as a Private in Company C of the 9th Indiana Calvary Regiment. One record showed he died on June 3, 1906 but I found no spouse or family listed for him. If anyone knows if I am missing anything or have the wrong data, please advise - Karen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rex Bertram" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, August 28, 2007 7:48 PM Subject: Re: [INRANDOL] Reynard Family > Hi Karen. 3. Hi Karen. There is a Jesse C. Rheynard listed on the 1880 Randolph Co. census in White River Township. He is 7 years old. Looks like a near perfect match for your Jesse. His mother is Liddy (45 yrs old). There is also a daughter, Annie (13 yrs old) in the household. All born in IN. Liddy appears to be the "Lydia" Reynard listed in White River Township in 1870. The family is as follows: Isaac Reynard 49 IN Lydia 34 IN Male 19 (can't make out the name) IN George 17 IN Annie M. "Knight" 3 IN Looks like Annie (13 in 1880) was probably not a Reynard; but ended up listed as a Reynard in 1880. So... based on the 1880 and 1870 census, looks like Isaac and Lydia were probably the parents of your Jesse. You should be able to verify this without too much trouble, by locating the probate file on Isaac, in Randolph Co. Looks like he probably died between 1870 and 1880. There is almost certainly a probate file for him since he had a substantial value of real and personal property per the 1870 census. Rex W. Bertram 132 S. I have a Jesse Reynard born in 1872 in Indiana married to Anola Almira Keys born in 1880 in Randolph County. Can any of you Reynard researchers tie this man to one of your family trees? Some listings show his father as Adam Reynard born in Ohio in 1811 married to Patience Green born in North Carolina but that would make him 61 at the time of Jesse's birth. I found a census record for White River both in 1850 and 1860 for Adam but the youngest child was listed as Joseph born about 1848-1849. Anyone know???
