    2. Anthony Meeks
    3. The Digital Collections of the IUPUI Library has a copy of a plat book for Randolph County on their website. The plat book is undated. I checked the front couple of pages for each book but none of them had a date on them. Since the originals are owned by the Indiana State Library I went to their catalog on their website. This is the entry for the books:Personal Author : Sidwell studio, Lombard, Illinois.Title : [Plat books of Indiana counties].Publication Information : Lombard, Ill. : Sidwell studio, [1925-1941]So from this entry an individual map would fall into the time period from 1925 to 1941 which is a very big range. The plat book can be found by going to the link at http://indiamond6.ulib.iupui.edu/IndianaPlat/ and entering Randolph County in the search box and hitting search. This will bring up Plat Book of Indiana Counties Volume 5. Just click on the link for Plat Book 5 and it will take you to page 107 for an overall map of the county. Then pages 108-120 cover the townships in alphabetical order. Corbit. (Last name could be spelled Corbitt.) Wiley was born in 1834 in N. Carolina. Parents names unknown. In 1850, at the age of 15, he was living in Greensfork Township with the family of Blake and Nancy Wiggs and their children. In 1860, he was still in Greensfork but living with in the household of Sara Parker and Sarah M. Fulgin or Fulgium (2 women in their 60's) and there were other children in the household. In 1870, he was married to Elizabeth Staight and living in White River Township with his family. He then went into the Civil War (Darke County, Ohio) and returned to Indiana. Elizabeth died and Wiley married Sopha Johns (of Indiana). Later, the couple and their family moved to Grand Traverse County, Michigan where Wiley died in 1906. While Wiley Corbit lived in Randolph County, there were many other Corbits (and Corbitts) living nearby and I am sure that he was related to some or all of them. Almost all of the Corbits and Corbitts living in Randolph County, as well as Sara M. Fulgin and Blake & Nancy Wiggs were born in North Carolina. If anyone has any information regarding any of this, PLEASE CONTACT ME. I need to find ancestors who were related to Wiley Corbit in order to figure out who his parents were to be able to move forward with my genealogy project. Please email me directly at [email protected] Thank you! Patti Fons Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [INRANDOL] The War and Darke & Randolph counties
    2. Torres, Jane E
    3. Hello, Tonight on PBS "The War," a new Ken Burns series will begin. It promises to show the human side of the war. To go along with this, I have this afternoon mounted a gift to all of us from Billy Baker -- the 1945 obituaries from the Union City Times Gazette. These obituaries cover a large area of Darke and Randolph counties. Before the decedent index, I have listed the 76 men whose obituaries were published that year as casualties of World War II. We can easily see how our small, rural area was so heavily touched by this terrible war. This brings the number of obituaries that Billy has transcribed from the Union City Times Gazette (and its predecessor title) to over 5,280. I can't express how grateful I am for this gift. Thank you Billy!!! The URL: http://randolph.dcoweb.org/UCobits/1945index.html Take Care, --Jane

    1. [INRANDOL] Bothast Family Reunion
    2. Billy J. Baker
    3. Union City Times-Gazette, Thursday, August 15, 1946 Eighty People Attend First Reunion Of Bothast Family. The first Bothast reunion as held Sunday at the C. I. O. hall with eighty persons present. After a delicious diner, plans were made for the reunion to be held nest year on the last Sunday in July. Officers elected were John Boggs, president, and Richard Bothast, secretary-treasurer. Ida Bothast was the oldest relative present and Martha Goodman, a guest, the oldest person present. Following the dinner a musical program was presented, with group singing, and visiting concluded the afternoon. Many remained for the evening meal. Out of town members and guests present were: Luther BOTHAST and family of Liberty, Ind., Mrs. Lady Mae HOLFASTER, Mrs. Ada GILLETTE and family, Mr. and Mrs. Charles HOLFASTER and daughter of Osborn, Ohio, Thomas BOTHAST and family of South Bend, Ind., Alva BOTHAST and family of Greenville, Mr. and Mrs. Paul WIGGER and son of Richmond, Mrs. Whit HEMINGER and son, Allen, of Fulton, Ind., Mr. and Mrs. H. L. SHELLHASE and grandchild, Mr. and Mrs. William BOTHAST, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard BOTHAST, Mr. and Mrs. Dick ODELL and daughter of Dayton, Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. O. H. SHAFER and son, Mr. and Mrs. Paul FRYSINGER and son, of Springfield, Ohio. A brief family history was given by Mrs. L. Wigger: George Bothast was born in Hess, Germany, May 17, 1829. His parents brought him to Dayton, Ohio, when he was one year old. He had three sisters, Melia, Louise and Mary, and three brothers, Martin, Henry and John. One sister, Mary, was buried at sea on the way to America. On November 22, 1855 when he was 26 years of age he married Christena Adams. About 1857 he came here to live on the 40 acres of land where the Union City disposal plant is now located. Christena Adams was born in Dusseldorf, Germany, January 1, 1838. Her mother was buried in Germany when she was a child. An aunt, living in Dayton, Ohio, wrote glowing reports of the United States when Christena was ten years old. Her father owned and operated a butcher shop at Dayton. George and Christena had twelve children, George, John, William, Elizabeth, Charles, Fornia, Ella, Nellie, Adolph, Annie, Bertha and Mae. Of the twelve children, nine lived to marry and settle down in and around Union City. Twenty-six grandchildren lived to become of age and the family included four sets of twins. Two of the family, Thomas and Elmer, were in World War I and seventeen were in World War II. Howard Shafer was killed in the South Pacific during this war. Two Bothast brothers, George and John, married Adams sisters, Christena and Anna. They were a Lutheran family and lived for many years on West Division street in the brick home now owned by Max Schoenfeld. It is remembered that the late Governor Gray of Indiana was a frequent visitor at the Bothast home. Three sisters, Mrs. Anna Smith, Mrs. Bertha Alexander and Mrs. Mae Williams survive. George Bothast owned and operated a brick yard at the west edge of Union City for many years. Many of the old brick buildings in Union City were made from brick which was made in his brick yard. George died on July 26, 1902 at 73 years of age and Christena died April 25, 1914 at the age of 76. [ George and Mary Christena are buried in the Union City Cemetery, as were many of the Bothast family.]

    1. [INRANDOL] Question for all in general
    2. Coleen Coleman
    3. Looking for my Temple Smith born abt 1841-2 IN I thought Randolph Co. He was said to have married my Martha Ann Scott of IN. Was said to have been the son of Temple Calhoun and Prescilla (Crossley/Crossly) Smith of Randolph Co. He was not in Temple Smiths' will of 1885 and was said that they indeed lost several boys in 1860 to diptheria but I have reason to believe he was not one of those boys: John C., Jefferson, Samuel, and George Sylvester was among those that died the only one that did not die in 1860 wa Samuel, he died in 1838 but I can not locate them in the Union Twp Cemetery next to their parents unless they are not listed in the cemetery index. That would leave Temple, Benjamin and William W., who survived to childhood. Also was said perhaps Marthas' mother may have been Native American Heritage but this is unsubstantiated. Possibly he may have been encouraged not to marry outside of "his" kind. I have never been able to locate a marriage record for Marthas' parents who I believe was a John and unk Scott. Thanks for your input and help in this matter.

    1. [INRANDOL] Finding Ancestors Abroad
    2. Will Moistner
    3. Hello Everyone I live in Scotland but was born in Randolph County. Have been researching my Ancestors for quite a few years and came across this articale that might be of benefit to those of you that are researching out of the US. For centuries, people have sought refuge in Britain. Many Huguenots, for instance, came from France after 1565, fleeing persercution for their Protestant beliefs. Try the Huguenot Society (www.huguenotsociety.lorg.uk). Similarly, the Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain (www.jgsgb.org.uk) can help trace Jews who fled persecution across Europe.. For passenger ships arriving in Britain after 1860 are kept at the National Archives, (www.nationalarchives.gov.uk) They aren't complete, and are arranged by the name of the ship and the port it arrived at rather than by passengers names so it's not easy to pin down a passenger name. A lot of the ships stopped off in the UK before going on to America or Canada. This also covers those that were Naturalized in the UK. And these dates are 1844 to 1935. I am working on a getting a web site of the convict ships that sailed from the UK to Australia and the UK. There is a free site here, I had it once but lost the address so will have to work on that. I have found that a lot of ships from Europe stopped in the UK before making the crossing on to the States or Canada for food and cargo. So a lot of the names will be listed. If I can help please let me know and I will do my best. Wilbur Moistner ____________________________________________________________________________________ Got a little couch potato?
