Ed Shoppell of Jackson township, Owen county served as a juror in a murder trial in 1867. Mr. S., while believing the defendant guilty could not bring himself to convict. Contact the Owen County genealogy librarian at the library in Spencer to ask if there are other Shoppell data. (Mr. Shoppell spoke in German dialect). The story of the trial is in "Fact & Folklore of Owen County," l976; the story title is "Murder at Monon Station." I think the Putnam County library has a copy. Or borrow from interlibrary loan from Spencer. Library email: [email protected] owenlib.org. ~~Dixie Kline Richardson
