All of that man's male cousins, direct line male ancestors, etc. will have the same Y-DNA (with a mutation or two thrown in, possibly). No one could tell exactly how they were related to another person, only that they are related. We have to find the common ancestor by traditional means. These tests don't tell heritage or race, they don't use the part of the DNA that could tell potential for disease or other genetic traits. All it lets us do is match up people and know that those people either do or do not share a common ancestor on their paternal line. Anyone can take the test and not sign Family Tree DNA's release form. If that's not done, Family Tree DNA won't give your name or e-mail address to others who match your test scores. It would keep you from connecting with new cousins tho, and most of us are hoping to find new matches both now and in the future. I've put the test! results on the Charts page of the Martin DNA and linked the test numbers to that man's brief Martin line. Not everyone has given me their line, and that's certainly Ok. I only do that for those who want it. The Charts page is at http://www.geocities.com/henrymartin_dna/charts.htm if you'd like to see how I've done that. Any participant who hasn't given me their line isn't named on the site at all. Family Tree DNA will give each person a private page on their site where that man can see his test scores, any matches they have at this time, and a lot of other information. The Coordinator for the project can see that page too, but they are the only other one, unless you would choose to share that information with someone else. There is much good information on Family Tree DNA's site at http://www.familytreedna.com/ too. You might especially like their FAQ page. The charts on my web site are not the Y-DNA and I may have confused people by telling about those. The map on that site was from my mtDNA test (that goes through the female line only and is good for ancient heritage but not genealogy), and those triangles are the DNA Print test which is supposed to show percentages of heritage. For the surname projects we use the 25 marker Y-DNA - paternal line test. I do hope you will join us! It sounds like these tests are something that might help you answer some long standing questions. Hi Kay--I have been watching the MARTIN DNA project information for quite a while. I have two MARTIN lines that I have been researching for 30 years. What I am concerned with is the confidentiality of the information you will get from these tests. I am concerned that just anyone could get their hands on these tests. Could you fill me in on this? Thanks! Leah Martin Wakefield --Boundary_(ID_EuoOfpRoQGIbsgCMqGoEwQ)--
