136--DAVID PEFFLEY (son of No. 5) married in Botetourt Co., Va., (by Rev. J. Holms) June 15th, 1815, MARY GRAYBILL, born in Botetourt Co., Va., May 29th, 1797. Died on Raccoon Creek, Putnam Co., Ind., Nov. 4th, 1859 (dau. of DANIEL and ELIZABETH (Kinzer) GRAYBILL--married 1794-5, Franklin Co. Va., Daniel, (son of JOHN and HANNAH,) from Lancaster Co., Penna. to Va., in 1780. John, son of CHRISTIAN SR. and MARY, married probably in Germany, arrived Penna. 1744). Both are buried in the David Peffley private cemetery on the old homestead near Fincastle, Putnam Co., Ind. Mary's mother is buried in the same cemetery. She was born Nov. 26th, 1775, died June 17th, 1848. The tombstone is broken and the part with her name on is gone, only the dates and the initials "E. G." David Peffley moved to Putnam County, Indiana in 1830 and settled in Russell Twp., on Raccoon Creek, near Fincastle, entering a half section of land where he spent the remainder of his life. The country was virgin, heavily timbered with oak, chestnut, walnut, and large yellow poplar. The creek bottoms were full of hickory nuts, persimmons and pawpaws. He built a large double log house with a big double fire place. They had an out-door oven where they did their baking once each week. The original barn is still standing and in use today. It is a large side-hill type with the stalls for the stock on the lower hill side. The main floor is on a level with the road. In the old days there was a treadmill which was operated by two big steers. It was used to run a hay grinder on the second floor. They drove directly onto the main floor with the grain, which was threshed out with hand flails. On the same floor is the granary, still in use. All of the timbers are of yellow poplar, thirteen inches square and hand-hewn, mortised and put together with wooden pins. The siding is also of poplar, sawed at a waterpower mill on the creek, just below the farm. The barn is over 100 years old. The original ladders to the loft are still there and in use. David Peffley was a skilled workman and had his own water-power grist and saw mill on Raccoon Creek on his farm. He had two partners in the mill to whom he later sold his interest. The mill is gone, but the foundations are still there. Back of the house, near the cemetery, he had his own work-shop and forge. He was a fine cabinet maker. His grandson, John Franklin Peffley has in use a corner cupboard made by David, of white walnut, put together with wooden pegs only. It is over 100 years old. David spent much of his spare time in his shop. One of his specialties was the manufacture of cradles in two sizes, for cutting grain. Issue: All but last three born in Bot. Co., Ind. 8--REBECCA PEFFLEY, b. 6-12-1829, d. 5-26-1902, Catiln, Ill. 9--MICHAEL PEFFLEY, b. 6-2-1831, d. 12-11-1834, Putnam Co., Ind. 10--SARAH PEFFLEY, b. 6-1-1834, d. 12-19-1890, Putnam Co. 11--DANIEL PEFFLEY, b. 8-10-1836, d. 12-11-1907, Arkansas. (Above records of birth are taken from the bible of Sarah Carter, Now owned by her son, David I. Carter, Route 2, Roachdale, Ind.) David Peffley died intestate. The final settlement of his estate dated Oct. 20th, 1870, Court of Common Pleas, Greencastle, Putnam Co., Ind., names the above children of the said David Peffley. Jeffery G.
