    1. Pioneer John O'Neal
    2. Trying to find out what happened to my 3-greats grandfather John O'Neal, who moved to Putnam Co. 1825. Wife at that time was Nancy Harris. Son (my 2-greats g'dad) James lived in Warren Twp. until 1883, when he sold out and moved to Kansas. John remarried in 1849 to Jane Glover. Last seen in 1850 census. Rest of his kids moved to Iowa in mid-1850s. Wonder if John went with them, died in Put. or what. Any help appreciated. John O'Neal (born in Greencastle, lived in Cloverdale)

    1. Alexander WILSON & Sarah LUCAS KY>IN 1792 - 1876
    2. Alexander WILSON ( 1792 - 1860 ) and Sarah LUCAS ( 1797 - 1876 ) were both born in Shelby County, KY. They were married there on March 18, 1813. He served in the War of 1812 in the 1 Regiment Light Dragoons ( Simrall's ) Kentucky Volunteers in Captain William E. Young's Company of Cavalry. Having served in the military myself, I can appreciate the humor that he was paid $6.66 per month, and he was paid for his horse at $12.00 per month for a 30 day month! Both moved to Washington County, IN, sometime between 1818 and 1820, where he was noted as being one of the early distillers of corn whiskey - per the History of Washington County Indiana. George M. HOLSAPPLE, another ancestor, was also noted in the same paragraph as an early distiller. They moved on to Putnam County, IN, sometime between 1825 and 1829. Both are buried at Palestine Baptist Cemetery in Putnam County. I am looking for the elusive parents and siblings of Alexander Wilson. Perhaps someone in one of these county mailing lists has some information that can be of help. Thanks in advance. Richard T. ( Dick ) Kearns Pleasant Hill, CA

    2. Sharon Bryant
    3. Hi everyone, About 10 years ago I requested and received permission from the Putnam Co. Historical Society to edit and publish some Civil War letters written by Soloman Simpson Hamrick of Co. A, 27th Indiana Regiment to his family back home in Putnam Co. I've never done anything with the information I have but have finally decided that in the spirit of the INGENWEB project's goal of making records freely accessible via the Internet, that I will publish this information on the Inputnam website. I do have some background information on Hamrick's family and would invite anyone out there who has information on Ambrose Dudley Hamrick and Eliza Simpson Hamrick, "Simps" parents or on his brothers, Charles and Walter, or his sisters, Lucinda and Sarah to please contact me. I will need documentation if you have it. I am planning to "footnote" each page. I do not expect to have the first pages posted to the web until mid-February or early March in order to allow you to respond and for me to "write" the pages themselves. Thank you, Sharon Bryant

    1. Future of web-based genealogy
    2. Carleene Hubbard
    3. * * * * * PEERING INTO THE FUTURE by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG, Co-editor, RootsWeb Review Recently Mattel, the toy maker (Hot Wheels, Ken and Barbie), announced it would buy The Learning Company, Inc. Earlier in 1998, The Learning Company purchased Mindscape (producer of Family Tree Creator) and Broderbund (producer of Family Tree Maker), and then in December it acquired Palladium Interactive (producer of Ultimate Family Tree). What does this mean to genealogists? It appears Mattel is going to wind up with all of the genealogy toys, so to speak -- owning the major popular genealogy software programs and the companies that produce most of the genealogy CDs. Additionally, the "Wall Street Journal" in its December 17, 1998, issue announced that CMG Information Services, Inc., will invest $10 million in Ancestry for a 30 percent stake in that company. CMG is betting that genealogy is about to make a big breakthrough on the Web. However, the CMG investors are not talking about helping you find that long-lost ancestor when they refer to a "breakthrough." They mean making money. Where is all this going in 1999? I have as much trouble peering into the future as I do digging up the past, but it appears to me that the costs of computer genealogy (software and CDs) are likely to increase. Moreover, the price of admission to many genealogy sources on the Web is probably going to go up. Many surfers are already paying $5 to $10 per month ($60-$120 annually) to have access to various sources or finding aids. Many onliners are discovering their "free" Web space or e-mail account comes with hidden prices -- loaded with ads and their names and e-mail addresses sold to cyber-merchants. RootsWeb is one of the "Top 25" or so sites on the Internet and continues to swim against the tide by providing free access to huge amounts of genealogical data. Yet currently less than three percent of its users are providing financial support. If RootsWeb users contributed only $2-$3 per month ($24 to $36 annually) there would be adequate financing to maintain and build an incredible genealogical resource. If they don't, the future of Internet genealogy looks expensive.

    3. Hello everyone, I'm going to try one more time because I'm not sure that everyone understands what is going on. Most of us probably don't read the Wall Street Journal and would not know about these recent mergers/buy-outs, etc. This is a real threat to what we enjoy on the Internet. Another statistic for you: There are about 5,000 mailing lists hosted by RootsWeb and only 174 of those listowners have a clue what has been going on. Those who are subscribers to the Listowners-L know that we've been talking about how to raise additional monies for RootsWeb to upgrade their equipment and to expand the materials available to be posted on the Internet. Support Rootsweb and free access to genealogical data. Go to http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe today and make a donation. If you can't afford the $12 per year it takes to be a member then send what you can. I, personally, am going to upgrade my membership this year. The Clendinen cousins made their wishes known and paid for the webspace they have. The INPutnam list is being hosted FREE. How about it, Putnam Countians; can we give enough to be paying for our webspace too. 'Nuff said. Please read Brian's remarks below. >>Just so I don't seem alarmist, here's the background on why I'm concerned. Mattel/Broderbund has just locked up about 85% of the genealogical software and CD-ROM market with their purchases of TLC and hence Broderbund, Palladium, Mindscape, and essentially everyone else who sells genealogical software except Sierra and Wholly Genes. That means the Mattel/Broderbund monopoly can funnel major bucks into genealogy and be certain that it can charge the community essentially whatever it feels like for software and CD-ROMs. Ancestry just sold 30% of their company to CMG (a venture capital company) for $10,000,000. This is money on top of the $60/year they get from "tens of thousands of subscribers" (from the Wall Street Journal). That means that Ancestry has more than $10,000,000 to spend, and they expect to make a *lot* of profit off the community because venture capitalists don't make investments unless they believe they can score some thing 400% or higher profits within a 3-5 year period. Mattel/Broderbund and Ancestry expect to make a *lot* of money off our fellow genealogists. But the community has a choice. We can grow our own cooperatives like RootsWeb and voluntarily spend a few bucks apiece to bring data online, or we can be charged through the nose and make the stockholders at Mattel/Broderbund and Ancestry wealthy. The right choice seems like a no-brainer to me, but 94-98% of RootsWeb's users seem to be saying they think it's a pretty good idea to make the stockholders at Mattel/Broderbund and Ancestry wealthy. BTW, don't worry about the staff at RootsWeb throwing in the towel; we won't quit. But it is kind of discouraging when you watch large numbers of your users making what appear to be barkingly irrational choices. Cheers, B.<< Why don't you think of this as a Jerry Lewis telethon, give until it hurts and then give some more. Just kidding, but if you have gotten anything off the RootsWeb pages, please consider "paying" for it by making a donation.
