    1. Huffman, Williams: Putnam Co, IN
    2. Seeking information about Huffman or Williams families in Putnam Co., IN during the 1850's and beyond. We have a letter written by B. Huffman January 1862; letter was added on to by a Lucretia Huffman. Letter was addressed to Philip B. and Malinda (Nugent) Williams and started, "Dear brother and sister." As such, we do not know if Lucretia is Malinda's sister or Philip's. We think we have all of Phillip's family names and Lucretia is not among them. His sister, Rhoda Ann Williams Moore, lived in Pike Co., IL and did have a daughter named Louvina and one of the letters is from her -- she says "we are at Mother's today" and announced the news to her Aunt and Uncle that she had recently married a Union soldier (on August 18); signature looked like Louvina Benefil. Also, 1960 Putnam County Census lists a Garrett Williams, Charity Williams, and Henry Williams, age 6. We know that Garrett & Charity (parents of above Philip) moved to Putnam Co, IN in 1852 (oddly enough from Putnam Co., MO) and then to Pike Co in 1963. Does anyone have any knowledge of this Williams family (especially Henry) during this period? We do not know if Henry was their son, or if he was, if he lived to manhood. I know this is a length request and may be confusing. Please e-mail me directly if you have any information to share. Thank you.

    1. CRISS, TROTH, ASHBAUGH, NEWTON
    2. Laura Ellen Mitchell
    3. Searching for more information on THOMAS B. ASHBAUGH, who was the second husband of my great-grandmother Annie E. Kendall Newton Ashbaugh Criss. Annie married Thomas Ashbaugh in Putnam county on Jan. 4, 1872, and a daughter was born, Iona, sometime around 1873. Iona Ashbaugh is listed as 7 years old in the 1880 census of Clay County, where she was living with Annie and her third husband, John C. Criss. Did Annie and Thomas' marriage end with his death or a divorce? Searching for information on HANNAH TROTH CRISS. Hannah, born 1846 in Owen County, was the first wife of John C. Criss. I cannot find out what happened to Hannah. Her third child with John C. Criss was born in June of 1872, and by Dec. 3, 1874, he married Annie E. Kendall Newton Ashbaugh. I cannot find any evidence of Hannah's death or divorce in Clay County. I have looked at the Clay County courthouse at civil records that would have included a divorce if there had been one. I have looked at the cemetery indexes, and no Hannah Criss shows up. I have tried the county where she was from also, for death records. I am wondering if they divorced, possibly in Putnam County, since he married Annie there. Was there a requirement at that time that you live in the county in which you obtained a divorce? I wonder if Hannah remarried, but I have had no luck on that either. Her son (and John's) married in Putnam county too, so it seems as if the family might have been in Putnam county at some point, although John C. Criss was considered a long-time resident of Brazil. Searching for information on Annie E. Kendall's first marriage to THOMAS J. NEWTON, in Putnam county on May 22, 1867. Annie would have recently turned 17 years old when this marriage occurred. Did this marriage end in divorce or did Thomas J. Newton die? Laura Mitchell Terre Haute, Indiana

    3. "Upton" Shaw moved to Putnam county about 1840 and died there in 1875. His wife was Susan Branam. They had eight children, the eldest being Leonard B. Upton resided in Ohio in the 1830s and married Susan (actually Susanah Breneman) in Montgomery county Ohio in 1830. I suspect Upton's full name was Elijah Upton Shaw as Leonard B. had a son by this name. Upton was born in Virgina ca. 1810 and moved to Knox county Ohio with his parents ca 1825.

    3. Sharon, I noticed in your tagline that you are working on the Putnam County Day family. I'm descended from the following day family: Thomas Day, b. abt 1800 in (possibly) KY, married Mary, b. abt 1801 in (possibly) OH. They were in Marion County, IN for the 1850 & 1860 census, but had moved to Putnam County by 1880, when they were living with their son-in-law, James Ruark. They had the following 3 kids, probably more: James Day - b. abt 1832 in KY(?) - I'm just guessing James is a son. He was living with Mary and James Ruark in 1850. Mary Eveline Day - b. 1833 in Indianapolis, d. bef 1880. She married James Madison Ruark in 1852 in Marion Co, IN Elisha M. Day - b. abt 1837 in Indiana. Living with his parents in 1850. Sharon, I hope you (or anyone else out there) recognize this family. Due to the common name, I haven't had much luck tracing them earlier than 1850. Thanks! Jim Phelps

    2. I am new to this list and was delighted to find it. I am hoping to find more information on my Case ancestors. My Ggrandfather, Uriah Case, was born 15 May 1797, Montgomery Co., Kentucky, and died in New Maysville in Putnam County. He was married to Mary Keith who also died in New Maysville in 1888. Their daughter, Mary Katherine, my ggrandmother, was born in New Maysfield, in 1840. Is anyone else researching this family? Is there a way I can find out where Uriah and Mary were buried? Can anyone tell me which township New Maysville is in? I would appreciate any help. Thank you. Donna Carter

    3. Good morning, Does anyone out there have more cemetery listings they're willing to contribute? We have nothing from the following townships: Russell, Franklin, Jackson, Monroe, Greencastle, Warren, Jefferson and Cloverdale. I can work with a text file. If there is an alternate name for a cemetery, please list all of the names it might be known by. I am trying to cross-check what we come up with and the listing held at the State Library. Thanks, Sharon

    3. Well, maybe the one you are referring to as being north of Greencastle is the Brick Chapel Cemetery. This one sits on the right side of the road on US231 north (or 43 north). You can find a list at http://www.rootsweb.com/~inputnam This list does not give specific directions to these cemeteries. Some of the cemeteries have had listings posted.
