Hello, Putnam County subscribers. I have just joined your mailing list, so forgive me if I ask questions that have been asked here before. I am ignorant and trying to learn. In the past, I have been reluctant to research my COX ancestors, because of the commonness of the name. My few forays into COX records were overwhelming. But I feel I have slighted this branch of my ancestry, so I am wanting to give it a try, again. My problem is that I am unfamiliar with what records are available in your county and where to write or call for them. My g-g-grandmother was Ellen Elizabeth COX (September 4, 1840 - March 4, 1924). She was born in Floyd Township of Putnam County. Ellen Elizabeth COX's parents were Jeremiah M. D. COX and Catharine "Kitty" COX, both born in Kentucky circa 1810. They migrated to Putnam County in the mid-1830's. I found Jeremiah and Kitty COX on the 1840, 1850, and 1860 Census in Putnam County. That is about all I have found on them. Can anyone advise me on how I might find out more about these people? What resources are available to someone living at a distance (I'm in Colorado) ? How would I go about finding out when they died and where they are buried? Thank you for any assistance you can give me. Sharon Butsch Freeland Superior, Colorado
I regret that some on this list felt it necessary to "flame" Debbie. She has unsubscribed to the list as of this morning. I hope she will decide to come back to us shortly. My reason for wanting to put the whole matter behind us is that all of these messages sent @rootsweb.com are archived. This type of discussion is not genealogically fruitful and archive space is limited. My beef, IF I even have one, was NOT with Debbie but rather GenExchange. Not because they decided to set up these websites, but in the way they designed them. When first visiting their website it appears that a great deal of information is available. I checked several areas and found that to not be true. And to acknowledge Debbie's earlier response which she sent to the list -- yes, I do ask people to contribute information but I have also spent the past 25 years doing genealogy research and have a roomful of reference books. Some of the information, in fact, the majority of it comes from those reference books many of which are within the public domain. Those are the records that I post on the website. If any of you were around a year and a half ago perhaps you remember what the INGenWeb Putnam County site looked like at that time. I could be wrong, but I think it looks better and contains a good deal more information. Also when I took over this mailing list there were four subscribers. By combining the list and the website and making sure that each advertised the other, both have taken off. I could not believe that we had received over 5,000 hits in the year since I put the counter on the website. I truly regret we all ended up in this controversy and hope we can put an end to it. I will be putting up a link to the GenExchange page as soon as I can get to it. Sharon Bryant
I found that a very enthusiastic person has taken the time, her own time to dedicate a new site, giving us the opportunity to give information and receive information once the VOLUNTEERS, (the operative word here is volunteer) are able to input the data. I have considered becoming a volunteer when I return home nest year after 20 years in the Air Force, but to be quite honest I am rethinking this decision. The only way I would now would be anonymously! We wonder why genealogy has so many roadblocks on the internet and why we must pay for information, well comments and reactions like this I am sure make up at least 50 % of that reason. I agree with Debra, I am considering leaving this list, but I know where to go to the site for my information! Janice Katherine Lund wrote: > What did you find at the new site? Debbie Carter - please do NOT unsubscribe. We need all the researchers and input we can get in this genealogy game. Sit. Stay. Please. Karleen on the Oregon Coast
To the Listers: I am going to unsubscribe from this list for the time being. I have been maligned and flamed enough over the current topic for one week's time. I simply offered a different search site for availability and it has become a major issue and taken over this list. It is my firm belief that we live in America, which is a land of choices and the freedom to make those choices. As one person pointed out "why go to 2 websites" well, my research would be much easier and convenient if I could do it all from just one website, but I can't I use various areas. I have received many letters that appreciate the choice, and I thank you. I can assure you though, aside from what has been stated that the sources used for the items posted on the GenExchange are just as valid as those on the Gen Web sites, reference books are reference books, irregardless of the person searching them.As with ANY website, NOTHING should be taken at face value you should always verify everything. Any of you that choose to reach me may do so and you know how to privately. If anyone recalls I "invited" people to the website I commanded nobody. Thanks for the votes of confidence and I hope everyone starting a new website on any subject doesn't get the razing I received as there would be only one website on the internet and not really worth paying for or looking at. thanks Sharon but the items on the GenExchange also come from research in libraries and reference manuals as I do these myself. I appreciate your good wishes and I did put a link to your page on mine but I don't think it would be correct for me to state that any of your info is not accurate as I do know that yours comes from contributors also. We do on the genexchange require alot of documentation and source notes, it is not just what is off the top of someones head. I was however sent the following message from the creator of the GenExchange to forward to you, and so I will. Please send Sharon the following: We are very aware that Indiana, as well as other areas of the US did not have census taken for the years you have listed below. (an others) These links are there, but we are in the process of doing some editing. No one ever said the INGenWeb was lacking in anything. The INGenExchange has a different way of doing things, displaying information, and is different in many other ways. Since you are associated with the INGenWeb, you must be familiar with their terms, goals, etc. To find out more about the GenExchange, simply visit "About the GenExchange" at: http://www.genexchange.com/volunteers.cfm or read some of the 'Exchange" newsletter archives at: http://www.genexchange.com/gesr/archive.cfm These urls should tell you everything you need to know. No one project has a monoply on Genealogy. We are all free to participate within a project, or on our own without the assumption that one is lacking. Or ideas may be different, but the ulitmate goals are the same, to provide the researcher with free information online. The more info available to them, the better. Lookup volunteers: Each volunteer lists what resources they have available to them. There is a very wide variety. Some simply offer lookups in books, records etc they have onhand at home, in a close by local library, archives, courthouse etc. Other off to do some research at these other locations as well. It is up to the individual themselves as to what they offer.
Good morning, Can we put this to rest? At least on the mailing list? Yes, I did talk (email) to Debbie and I understand why she is involved. And all of you are free to visit any website you choose to visit. There is only one thing I would like to point out. If you go to the GenExchange website, you will find NO information except for what visitors have posted. There has never been a charge for the information you can find on the INGenWeb page for Putnam Co. It is offered freely. IF you should ever be charged for information that you request someone to look up for you, please let me know. No one is supposed to be using contacts made on the Putnam INGenWeb page for personal monetary gain. The only exception would be through the Classified Ads for items of genealogical nature that you will find on that page. Thanks, and good luck, Debbie, Sharon Listmaster, INPUTNAM Webmaster, INPUTNAM
I agree Lori! I support Rootsweb 100%, but they aren't the only game in town and they don't have all the genealogy info there is to offer by any means! Thanks- Patti
I think the new list is fine! It makes it easier to access plus when researching you would first think to go to the COunty where you have questions from! Keep up the good work! As far as duplicating, almost all of the sites duplicate each other when it boils down to basic information. But it allows specific information at each site as well. I have found various information at thousands of sites! Hi Patti/Debbi/all - I deleted the 'new site' and then spent an hour going through old messages and couldn't find it again. (Hard lesson, I cleaned History and Cache out so no more big saves like that) Can someone repost? I'd like to take a look at it. Hi Debbie- I can use all the help I can get! Thanks for the new site info! Patti
what is genExchange The Genealogy Exchange & Surname Registry, simply put, is a genealogical data exchange where visitors and researchers alike can go to find specific persons, and exchange specific data with one another. The GenExchange is one of the two or three largest non-commercial genealogy projects on the internet and is a community effort where visitors and project voluteers can contribute data for the free use of others. HOW AND WHY IT WAS STARTED This is really an involved question. The GenExchange was begun two years ago as a small experiment in combining online databases and genealogy. At that time dynamic web content was in its infancy, and it was an extreme rarity to find any web site offering what we wanted to do. In fact some of the largest Genealogical web sites on the internet were dead set against offering this level of search capability, but rather forced you to submit records as text documents. Running searches against those text documents produced links to text documents that held information you sought, and required you to visually scan the text document for the information you sought. Not only is it time consuming to scan static text documents; but it's also much more difficult to find the specific information you're looking for. For Any Further questions contact GenExchange@GenExchange.com
Look folks I am not going to keep going through this. If you choose not to use the alternate search site it is by your choice. This WAS NOT created or formatted by me. I am just monitoring it. If there are no resources, it is because nobody is adding any to it as the visitors are suppose to do. It is not meant to replace the other website but give an alternative. NOBODY IS FORCING ANYONE TO USE IT. I have already spoken with Sharon and it is our hope that we can benefit one another. This website is not like the other in which someone else adds the data. The researchers add the data for each others info. If there are any more complaints please feel free to direct them to joanne@genExchange.com she is the creator of this. Also there are 75 different listings there on site already and there will be more. Others are adding their data. If you did visit it you also saw it was began 1 week ago and I am sure nobody else has EVERYTHING on their site in 1 week. Debbie Carter
Why not stick to the Putnam County Genealogy page sponsored by ROOTSWEB who, by the way, contributes the space for this list. Why do we need "duplicate" sites for the same resources? Seems to me ROOTSWEB is doing an excellent job providing us free internet genealogy sources .... it's redundant to have to check another page....besides, I went to that page and there are no resources at all. Please reply to the list, not just to me...I'm sure others would be interested!
