1. County records
2. Sharon Bryant
3. I have had some reports of non-assistance from the Putnam County courthouse offices. The elected officials' first responsibility is to those people who elected them. We, the genealogists, generally have no impact on them. Unfortunate, but true. Each elected office-holder has the authority to decide how much time and effort they can allot for genealogists (and others). There has also been a change in the state laws which give them this authority. Putnam is a small farming county and generally the staff in each office is busy. One of the problems encountered by genealogists is that there seems to be no one at the present time who is doing genealogy research for hire. I am writing to each of the officials in the various offices in Putnam County to determine what their official policies are and will post that information here, as well as the mailing list, as soon as I receive it. Record Availability It is important to understand what resources are available particularly when you are talking about vital records. Marriages: Records began in 1822. All can be located at the Putnam County Clerk of Courts Office. PLEASE UNDERSTAND - The early marriages (prior to 1905) DO NOT contain family information. In 1905 marriage applications which give information on the bride and groom's parents, any previous marriages, etc. came into effect. Births: Birth records begin in 1882. Please take into consideration that children were generally born at home, sometimes without an attending midwife or physician. These births were sometimes not recorded until the parents got into town. Many times there is no given name recorded. In other cases, when an individual needed to establish their birth for social security purposes their given name will be pencilled in on the birth records. Deaths: Death records were not recorded until 1882 also. The amount of information that was recorded depended upon the type of record books the officials in the Board of Health office had purchased for that purpose. Cemeteries: Many of the cemeteries have been "read" and copies of that information may be found in the local library or at the Roy O. West library at DePauw University. There are approximately 160 cemeteries in Putnam County and I cannot guarantee that those which are on family farms have been "read." I am transcribing the information as I receive it and posting it to the cemeteries listing here on the website. I do plan a trip to Indiana in May and will be gathering as much information as I can. Censuses: Census records for Indiana began in 1820. However, Putnam County was not formed until 1822. Census records are available for 1830, 1840 (no information other than name of head of household and number of individuals by gender in age groups), 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920. The 1930 census will be available in 2002-72 years after it was taken due to law. Starting with 1850 all residents in a household are listed. There is no 1890 census as these records were destroyed.

1. BLM land patents and township numbering
2. Debbie Carter
3. List I have seen lately a few persons asking how to tell exactly where the "range" or township number lies within a county as far as the land patents are concerned. I wrote to the BLM website and they directed me to this link on their page which explains it very well, although you might have to go through it a few times. There are also 3 different diagrams to better explain it.Anyone interested might want to check it: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/visitor/land_desc.asp I hope this helps someone. 1. Gosport and Quincy HS Yearbooks
2. RICHARD CARTER
3. HELLOOOO OUT THERE... I have a favor to ask. Is there anyone who might have a copy of the Gosport HS, yearbook for the year 1933 or 1934, who might be able to send me a copy of the picture of my Father, HERSCHEL E CARTER???? aka: "TOM" CARTER. I have been told he graduated in 1933, but, I am inclined to believe 1934. Or, is there anyone who might have a copy of the 1934-35 or 36 Quincy HS Yearbook, who might be able to send me a picture of My Mother, FLOY L LOCKHART. She would not have been in the graduating class. I would be very appreciative of some help here, as my mother died young,(1942) and I do not have any photos of either, when they were young. 1. PEFFLEY-PEFLEY-PEFFLY Families in America
2. Jeff Scism
3. PEFFLEY-PEFLEY-PEFFLY Families in America I am currently in the process of putting this book page by page through my OCR program in my scanner, then ( I have verified the book is in the public domain) I will add it to my Peffley family association website, http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~scismfam/peffley/ This 270 page book was published in 1938 by May Miller Frost and contains MANY marriages and descendant lists for the turn of the last Century (1800-1900s) in Putnam County as they married into the central Peffley lines. The scanning process is slow and may take several weeks to complete. Be advised that the book is not 100% accurate but is a good indication of who married who in the covered families. Data includes street addresses of those still alive on the publication date. I do have a lot of "supplemental" data from submitters on the internet that brings much of the "missing" data to light. Used in conjunction with the living recollection of the (1936-1938) contributors, and with the added living recollections and research of the current family reseachers, this should give an fairly accurate ( at least 80%) view of the family in the 20th Century. I am continuing (slowly) to get this information together. ( I will be reindexing the database as I go along) although the database hasn't reached a usable stage yet I will still do specific look-ups from the text and scan out any information found. The town of Greencastle seems to be a "central" location for many of these families listed. Jeff Scism, IBSSG Peffley Family Association Here is a sample page: 187—ELIZABETH PEFFLEY (daughter. of No. 136) married in Putnam Co., Ind., in 1884, WESLEY BURKETT, (State marriage license says BURKET) born Mar. 13th, 1815, died in Putnam CO., Indiana Feb. 2nd, 1863, (son of ABRAHAM and CATHERINE BURKETT). 2. Hi List, Didn't know if this had anything to do with the purpose of the list but thought it was worth passing on. Mary Someone has put together a listing of every High School in America. You find your state, find your city, then find your school and graduation year. Then, add your name and contact point. Soon, you can contact anyone from your class that is already there. Whoever did this was very thorough. http://www.highschoolalumni.com High School Alumni- A Web Site For Alumni of US High Schools

3. Researching the HYLER and BICKEL families. I know they lived in Putnam Co. 1845 ---1850. Jacob Hyler and Hanna Rinehart Hyler and children Jacob H. Hyler Jr., Elizabeth Ellen Hyler and Frederick Hyler. All these children were born in Putnam Co. If someone would be so kind to do a lookup it would be greatly appreciated.

1. 1870 Census - Putnam County, Indiana

3. Does anyone have access to the 1870 Census for Putnam County, Indiana? I am looking for information on JEREMIAH M. D. COX. Reportedly, he appears on the census in Jackson Township of Putnam County, on page 145. If anyone has any additional details, besides the above, could you let me know what information there is on him and/or those living in his household? Actually, now that I am thinking about it . . . if anyone has any later census years' information, that could be helpful, too. I can't seem to find when this man died or where he is buried. I am trying to narrow down the time frame. He was born in 1810, so he undoubtedly died by 1910. I have seen him and family on the 1840, 1850, and 1860 Censuses in Putnam County, but I don't know for sure how long after 1860 he was living. If he's on the 1870, but not the 1880, then he could have died in between. If he's on the 1880 and not the 1900, then he died between those years. If he's on the 1900, well, then he lived to be a very old man! Any info anyone has from the Censuses of 1870, or 1880, or 1900, could help. BTW, Jeremiah M.D. Cox was my great-great-great-grandfather. His wife was Catherine "Kitty" Herrod Cox. Thanks, Sharon Freeland Superior, Colorado

3. Everyone, I returned home from Honolulu this evening. Had 380 unread messages waiting for me. I am now down to 87 unread but a lot unanswered. I am only going to be at home for one week and then I leave for more or less four weeks. I will answer questions, etc. as much as I can before I have to pack up and leave again. Sharon

3. If your message is intended for just one person, perhaps you could send it directly to that person and not to the entire Putnam County mailing list.

3. I sent you another message but don't know if you received it. I have a couple of corrections: 1. The Christian LANDES (b. about 1710) (the first) was not the son of John LANDES but if you have proof, I'd love to see it...None of the rest of us can prove this...although many have tried and we'd love to find his Father. 2. John LANDES, Sr. and Catherine MILLER were married about 1770 in York County, Windsor Township, PA. Both families lived adjacent to each other there. They were married BEFORE they migrated to Virginia.
