I recently contacted the University to get the lowdown on obituary lookups. I'll paste in the reply I received below. I just want to thank all the people who answered my query about Belle Union. This is the greatest list with the most helpful people! Considering how small I now know Belle Union to be, I think everyone who has every lived there or visited there has responded. If and when we find Dr. John W. MAHORNEY's final resting place, I'll let you know. I just wondered if any of you who have death certificates for ancestors from around these parts has even seen Dr. Mahorney's signature on them. Thanks again.
We're going on vacation so will hear from you all when we get back! Patti :-)
Is anyone familiar with Belle Union? If so, what is the nearest library or genealogy society that might have local records? I am looking for a physician so I imagine there would be some record of him there. We just learned that Dr. John W. MAHORNEY [1857-1892] lived there after medical school. He was married to Mary E. "Lize" SMITH from Monroe Co. She died in Belle Union January 15, 1889. Their child, Roxie Bill Mahorney died July 1888 in Belle Union at one year of age. They are buried in Mt. Tabor Cemetery in Adams Twp, Morgan Co, IN. His biography says he practiced in Little Point in 1884. Would those towns have been close enough for a commute at that time? Although Dr. MAHORNEY died in Arney, Owen Co, IN, the Health Dept claims to have no death record there. I would like very much to know where he is buried.

James Boldon, Justice of the Peace, Owen County, In., married Matilda NUTTERFEE 5-7-1834. James "Disappeared" between 1860 and 1870, and presumably died. Does anyone have any information on what happened to Matilda? It would seem that a JP and his wife would rate an OBIT, somewhere... Dick Carter rcar37@prodigy.net
Need parentage of above lady who married James Baldon, early Owen Co., In., J,P.... Also, need her relationship to Nancy Nutterfield, on Owen Co. census of 1840, and to Eliza Nutterfee, wife of John Carter Jr., of Taylor Twp., Owen Co., and Cloverdale Twp., Putnam, Co., In, from 1830's until her death in 1866. Dear List: Does anyone know where I might find an obituary on a Putnam Co decedant? This is what I know about my great grandmother, wife of Nathan Ward Fowler: Anne Elizabeth Frances (Moss) Fowler, b 24 May 1826 in VA, d 3 Jul 1912 in or near Cloverdale, IN; buried Cloverdale cemetery. I am hoping an obituary might provide some information about her parents, which I have not been able to learn through other means. Suggestions most welcome. Thank you. Can anyone tell me the beginning of the death records for Putnam Co. or better still for INDIANA? Thanks, Ellie

Can someone give me an idea of the genealogical holdings of the Cyril Johnson Room at the Putnam County Library in Greencastle? Someone sent the URL for the library's web page, but it doesn't go into much detail on the library's holdings. Specifically, do they have on microfilm the Putnam County newspapers that are listed in the state library's holdings? (http://www.statelib.lib.in.us/WWW/INDIANA/NEWSPAPER/PUT.HTML) I'd write for some obituaries if they do. . . Larry Slavens Des Moines, IA
Has anyone done research in Putnam County, Indiana, especially on the Isaiah Slavens Sr. and Reuben Slavens Sr. families? Wills, probates, guardianships, obituaries, and other records useful in sorting out familial relationships? I've found documentation that my mystery man James Slavens of Hendricks County, Indiana, is the son of Reuben Slavens Sr., and as this goes against the accepted genealogy, I'm especially interested in finding other documentation. But I also don't want to waste time and money looking over material that someone else has already researched; I'd rather look for "new" information that would benefit us all.
Thanks to each and everyone of you who responded to my humble message... I had over 100 responses, and all but 2 were in agreement. Both were list admistrators... ONE, WCKY, DIDNT FEEL IT BELONGED ON THE LIST, AND THE OTHER, PENNSYLVANIA-ROOTS TOLD ME I WAS NOT AUTHORIZED... I DIDNT REALIZE THAT PENNSYLVANIA-ROOTS WAS A RESTRICTED LIST...Where I wasnt authorized to post, SO, I UNSUBBED...... I offered my apologies, and forgot it. It is nice to know that so many have the patriotism to respond irregardless of "rules". Dick Carter rcar37@prodigy.net
