    3. 136--DAVID PEFFLEY (son of No. 5) married in Botetourt Co., Va., (by Rev. J. Holms) June 15th, 1815, MARY GRAYBILL, born in Botetourt Co., Va., May 29th, 1797. Died on Raccoon Creek, Putnam Co., Ind., Nov. 4th, 1859 (dau. of DANIEL and ELIZABETH (Kinzer) GRAYBILL--married 1794-5, Franklin Co. Va., Daniel, (son of JOHN and HANNAH,) from Lancaster Co., Penna. to Va., in 1780. John, son of CHRISTIAN SR. and MARY, married probably in Germany, arrived Penna. 1744). Both are buried in the David Peffley private cemetery on the old homestead near Fincastle, Putnam Co., Ind. Mary's mother is buried in the same cemetery. She was born Nov. 26th, 1775, died June 17th, 1848. The tombstone is broken and the part with her name on is gone, only the dates and the initials "E. G." David Peffley moved to Putnam County, Indiana in 1830 and settled in Russell Twp., on Raccoon Creek, near Fincastle, entering a half section of land where he spent the remainder of his life. The country was virgin, heavily timbered with oak, chestnut, walnut, and large yellow poplar. The creek bottoms were full of hickory nuts, persimmons and pawpaws. He built a large double log house with a big double fire place. They had an out-door oven where they did their baking once each week. The original barn is still standing and in use today. It is a large side-hill type with the stalls for the stock on the lower hill side. The main floor is on a level with the road. In the old days there was a treadmill which was operated by two big steers. It was used to run a hay grinder on the second floor. They drove directly onto the main floor with the grain, which was threshed out with hand flails. On the same floor is the granary, still in use. All of the timbers are of yellow poplar, thirteen inches square and hand-hewn, mortised and put together with wooden pins. The siding is also of poplar, sawed at a waterpower mill on the creek, just below the farm. The barn is over 100 years old. The original ladders to the loft are still there and in use. David Peffley was a skilled workman and had his own water-power grist and saw mill on Raccoon Creek on his farm. He had two partners in the mill to whom he later sold his interest. The mill is gone, but the foundations are still there. Back of the house, near the cemetery, he had his own work-shop and forge. He was a fine cabinet maker. His grandson, John Franklin Peffley has in use a corner cupboard made by David, of white walnut, put together with wooden pegs only. It is over 100 years old. David spent much of his spare time in his shop. One of his specialties was the manufacture of cradles in two sizes, for cutting grain. Issue: All but last three born in Bot. Burks, farmer and stock raiser, Section 34, was born on the 10th of June, 1814. His father, Allen Burks, a native of Virginia, was by occupation a hatter and a farmer, and lived to the age of 93 years. His mother, formerly Elizabeth Townsend, was born in South Carolina, near the town of Charleston. Allen spent his boyhood days on a farm, and received the benefits of a common school education. He accompanied his parents to Putnam County, Indiana, in 1828, and remained there until 1830, when he immigrated west, and settled near Weston, Platte County, Missouri. After living there for seven years, he returned to Putnam County, Indiana, but came back to Missouri in the fall of 1855, and settled in Clarke County; thence to Hancock County, Illinois, in the fall of 1865, and from there to Nodaway County, Missouri, in the spring of 1873, locating where he now resides. He owns 174 acres of fine bottom land, upon whi! ch is a neat residence, with a fine view of the City of Maryville. His farm is well watered by springs, and stocked with different grades of stock. Mr. Burks is a member of the Masonic fraternity. Politically, he is a Greenbacker. He has been twice married. First, about the year 1836, to Miss Elizabeth Chadd. She died in the fall of 1855, and left five children, three of whom are now living: John H., born October 28, 1838; David C., born September 27, 1842, and Ruth C., born September 15, 1848, (now Mrs. I. J. Crossen). He was married again on the 15th of May 1856, to Mary S. Waggner, a native of Clarke County, Mo., born September 6, 1833. By this union they have seven children: Alexander C., born December 8, 1858; Martha A., born April 10, 1862; William A., born February 8, 1865; Eugene, born November 25, 1866; Cassia, born May 12, 1869; Robert E. L., born in April 1871; Ada, born September 1, 1875. Himself and wife are active members of the Christian Church of Ro! se Hill." 11 Jun 1891 issue Nodaway Democrat cited in Abstracted Newspaper Index of Nodaway Co., MO, 1869-1900, as saying A. J. Burks was "hale and hearty." Research by Jeannine Long of the 11 Jun 1891 issue on microfilm at the Nodaway Co. Museum in Oct 1999 failed to locate such an item. 8 Sep 1892, p. 6 (top), column 4, The Nodaway Democrat - Obituary (Jeannine Long found this obituary on microfilm in the Nodaway Co. Historical Society Museum, 112 N. Walnut, Maryville, MO, in October 1999. The museum cannot print from the microfilm records.) "Allen J. Burks, an estimable citizen of Maryville, breathed his last Monday afternoon about 5 p.m. He was taken sick a week ago with flux, and finally his illness assumed the form of paralysis. He was unconscious for two days before the end came. "Mr. Burks was born in Mercer Co., KY, June 10, 1814, and consequently, was 78 years of age his last birthday. His father, Allen Burks, lived to the age of 93. . . (repeats the article from 1882 History of Nod. Co. at this point) . . locating on his farm just southeast of Maryville. "Something over a year ago he rented his farm and moved to this city. (Repeats aforesaid article at this point) . . . They had seven children, all of whom are living and reside in this county: Alexander C., Martha A. (now Mrs. M. P. Ross), William A., Eugene A., Cassia (now Mrs. Clifford Ruth), Robert and Ida. "The funeral services were held at the Christian Church, Tuesday, at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Elder I. N. McCash. Mr. Burks had long been a member of this church and was a true man in every respect, and a sincere, devoted Christian. He lived a long and useful life and has gone to enjoy the rewards of his good deeds and to live with the Savior of men as long as eternal ages endure. The burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery." 9 Sep 1892 - Nodaway Co. Probate Court - Application for Letters of Adm. filed by Mary S. Burks in estate of Allen J. Burks. Notes for James Chadd: Gilbert Crossan's notes state: "James Chadd, the youngest son, who lived to be an old man, and died about 1900. Ruth Wright, his daughter, corresponded with mother till she died." A James Chadd, 21, b. IN, is shown on 1850 Putnam Co., IN Census, with wife Marinda, 18, b. IN. Is this the son of Daniel and Ruth? He could be the 1 male under 5 shown in the 1830 Census with Daniel and Ruth, being b. 1829, say, and Samuel we know was b. 2 Oct 1830, undoubtedly after the census was taken. If so, Gilbert would be in error that James was the youngest son. Child of James Chadd is: 15 i. Ruth3 Chadd. She married Unknown Wright45. Notes for Ruth Chadd: >From Gilbert Crossan's notes: (naming siblings of Elizabeth Chadd Burks: "James Chadd, the youngest son, who lived to be an old man, and died about 1900. Ruth Wright, his daughter, corresponded with mother until she died."

No issue. Present address: 417 S. Willowbrook Ave., Compton, Calif. "Henry Wallace Peffley and Emma Ruby were married at the home of Mrs. Mathilda Ruby five miles west of Winterset, Madison County, Iowa. "We were both reared on farms and prior to our marriage I served an apprenticeship as a carpenter and Emma became a school teacher. I was 23 years old and Emma 21 when we were married, and taking Horace Greeley's advice went west. We headed for Fairbury, Jefferson Co., Neb. The snow was so deep and drifted we could not use our covered wagon. So we built pinsleds and removed the wheels which we hauled as baggage. "The roads being drifted full of snow we travelled through fields scooping snow when we came in contact with roads and fences. We had a span of horses on the tongue, and a span of mules in the lead, which made it difficult in passing those meeting us. The third day out, while driving on a road cut out of a hillside our sled turned over on its side and everything was thrown into the wagon cover except a small stove, which was bolted to the floor. We organized a fire department, and with a bucket and plenty of snow we soon had the fire under control. It took some time to replace our baggage, and after we were on our way we felt we were ready for most anything that might happen. After crossing the Missouri River on the ice we found traveling much better and soon discarded our sled as there was very little snow on the ground. "We located on a farm near Fairbury the first year and raised a bumper crop Page 54 of corn. We planted fifty acres which yielded fifty bushels to the acre. We used to feed our cows on nubbins in Iowa, but they would have starved for them in Nebraska for the ears were very large. Corn sold fifteen to twenty cents per bushel. Many farmers used it for fuel. The second year we went into a General Mercantile store in Fairbury and in July we lost everything we had in a Nebraska cyclone. "Then Uncle Sam said he would bet us 160 acres of land in northwest Kansas against fourteen dollars that we could not stay on it for five years. He won. We took a homestead and after eighteen months we decided we had lived long enough on pancakes cooked on buffalo chips, so we commuted our claim and went to Arkansas City, Kan., to await the run to Oklahoma Reservation. "In the meantime a colony of immigrants was going to Lake Charles, Louisiana to engage in rice raising. We joined it and stayed there about five years and were very successful, but on account of my wife's health we returned to St. Louis, Mo. There I was employed as a coach carpenter for the Missouri Pacific Railroad Co., for about nine years. "We landed in California in 1906. I followed my trade as carpenter until October 1908 when we accepted a call from the "National Indian Association" of New York to go as Missionaries to the Klamath Indians in Klamath Co., Oregon. We were in this work five years. I worked in the shipyards at San Pedro during the World War. I retired in 1929"--HENRY W. PEFFLEY. 3. HI, I had surgery on Thursday morning and it has taken more out of me than I expected. Removed my gallbladder (stone the size of the first digit of my thumb if not bigger). And repaired a hernia (third time--seems the abdominal wall muscles are tissue-paper thin). You all are going to have to take care of yourselves for a while. I'll be back on line when I can sit upright without getting dizzy. I'll talk to you later. Sharon
