    1. Hadden Cemetery No #2 with Nancy Faries/Farris grave
    2. Ruth Miller
    3. Hi Sharon, There is another Hadden Cemetery near Cloverdale that is not listed on the Putnam County web page. Hadden (SW corner SW 1/4 sec. 18 T13N R3W) 700S 300E Jefferson Twp., Putnam Co. IN Go south out of Greencastle on SR231 to 700S (Jim Street) turn east and go approximately one mile. The cemetery is on a private farm adjacent to the east side of the Conservation Club, about 1/4 mile north of the road at the edge of woods. My g-g-g-grandmother, Nancy (Hadden) Faries (d 1857) is buried there along with her sister and father. The cemetery now has a fence around it and the owner is cleaning it up. There appears to be several graves in this cemetery, but only three stones. According to Putnam County History 1966, page 252, it states that the cemetery contained about 20 graves. Does anyone know where I might find names for the other graves? Ruth 01ramiller@bsuvc.bsu.edu

    3. I need someone with access to an 1890 or 1880 Indiana census to check something for me. I am searching for Matthew Madison Smail, in the 1890 census he would be 20 or 22 yrs old in the 1880 he would be 10 or 12 yrs old. He shows up in the 1900 Putnam County Indiana census with his wife Matilda 31, and his children Roscoe D. 8, and Bessie L. 2. Matthew's age is given as 30 in the 1900 census. I also have him in 1920 in the Tennessee census where his age is given as 48. The 1920 census has his mother and father both born in Indiana. I am trying to find Matthew's mother and father. Matthew is my g-grandfather. Thank you for any help or clues you may provide. 1. Reminder- Peffley Book on-line
    2. Jeffery G Scism
    3. The Peffley Book which contains MANY Putnam County Families, is on line. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~scismfam/peffbook/index.htm This is an UPDATED address, the Book is now broken down into 18 chapters for faster loading, the first two chapters are internally linked, the remaining chapters will be linked as time permits. The link above is an EVERYNAME index to the original work, published in 1938. Additions to these lines are being solicited, and I will eventually begin adding data into the text (in blue) that updates the data to current knowledge I have here. I will NOT place dates in after 1930, unless the person is deceased. Corrections, additions, and information on these families is welcome. Jeff Scism, Peffley Family Association

    2. wayne rickert
    3. Looking for information on Carter Family in Putnam Co. IN. John Carter,b. 1829, my gg grandfather, left there in about 1870 with his wife Mary Jane Boor (or Bohr) and family and went to Kansas. One son, John Albin, was for sure born in Greencastle. The family was in Greencastle at least in 1860 and his father (John-my ggg grandfather ) and mother (Jemima) are buried in the Old Greencastle cemetery. Two brothers, names unknown, remained in Indiana. One was a farmer and the other a lawyer. The family apparently moved to Indiana from Ohio. It was probably sometime after the 1830's. I will be traveling through the County in the fall of '01 and any leads or places to search are appreciated.

(He was the father of Paul Pickett who was born in 1869). I think his wife was possibly Analine Taylor? Haven't found record yet. I think he had a brother named Shelby? He later served 2 terms as township trustee. Was a teacher and artist. I haven't been able to go any farther back yet than him. Thankyou very much for your time. 2. In reply to the query below. Check for city directories during that time frame. Also the historical society usually has info on the businesses of a city or county.. The census of 1920 is available.. that might be of some help too. Good Luck!.. Ellie S. 3. Let me second Sharon's sentiments, both about the coming influx of "newbies" and about the holiday season. And let me add one more consideration-- If you've posted to the mailing lists or message boards in the past and have changed email addresses, please repost your query with your new address. It's frustrating to find in the archives a message from someone researching the same line you're stuck on, and then have your email to them bounce because it's outdated. Ditto if you've posted the URL to your web page and the link is no longer valid. Happy holidays! Larry Slavens

    1. It's new computer time!
    2. Sharon Bryant
    3. Dear List Members, It is that time of year again when we suddenly will have an influx of new online genealogy enthusiasts with their holiday gift computers that are usually newer and faster than what many of the rest of us have. For a great many of them, it will be their first time online. Some of them will make mistakes and some may (will) unintentionally do things and write things that may be irritating to us and against what we have set up as our list rules. Please take this into consideration in advance and be helpful to them. If things get out of hand, know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problems. Just remember, one of these new members might hold the clue you have been searching for. Let us not discourage them before they have a chance to learn how this works. I would like also to take this time to wish each of you and yours a wonderful and safe Holiday Season. Sharon
