    3. How do I find an index to wards of early orphanages in and around Indianapolis? My father Charles E. Foster, earlier known as Ernst B. Foster as late as 1920. In 1920 he was a ward in the home of John M. Quinkist of Madison Two, Putnam Co. IN. The ward Ernst B. Foster was shown as age 13. His birth date was February 1905 later he used Feb. 20 1906. By 1926 on a marriage questionnaire he wrote his father was George W. Foster, deceased. The mother he wrote was Louise M. ????, deceased. His birth record shows the mother was a Banks. At that time the boy had not been given a name. Later I learned the mother was Altha M. Banks. In 1926 June 26th Charles E. Foster married Marie Catherine Steele. She was the dau of William Ransom Steele and Amanda Richardson. I was told he always went to a reunion in southern Indiana. I would appreciate help finding this boy by the name of Ernst B. Foster during 1910. This could give an answer nearer the date of his placement in the orphanage. I have not been able to locate George W. Foster since the sons birth in 1905. Nor the mother Altha M. Banks. My only clue is a picture of them and written on the back that they would make their home in Mitchell, Indiana. The birth certificate that I located was recorded in Orange Co. Indiana due to the closeness of Orange to Mitchell. Altha M. Banks was the daughter, of Joseph Banks and Sarah Fleenor. After their divorce Altha M. Banks was a servant in the home of Cacthcart. Ia anyone can find a lead I would appreciate the help. Kitty Beck<shatara@cei.net>

    3. I am looking for a Maude Hoffman/Huffman. She is my father's great-grandmother. She had an illegitimate son which she named Stephen Fite, on June 7, 1877. The only other information I have on her is that she had the baby in the Rigdon, Madison Co., Ind. area. But that doesn't mean that is where she lived. The baby was given up and raised by a Sarah Richardson of Wheeling, Deleware Co., In. If anyone out there has any information it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks Christine Stout

    3. I should have mentioned the book I was quoting from: "BLAZING THE WILDERNESS ROAD WITH DANIEL BOONE" By Carl R. Green 128 pages, easy reading. There are a lot of books available, check your library. Along with a good biography of Daniel Boone, you will get a feel for what our ancestors went thru opening this country up. Also, The Wilderness Road they refer to is the one thru the Cumberland Gap - the first road into Kentucky, accessed from Virginia and the Carolina's. The Cumberland Road or National Road did not cut thru the Cumberland Gap, but opened the way West from Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, it was a much easier path to follow and bypassed Kentucky.

    3. In a history I'm reading they mention that by 1818 the Cumberland Road aka the National Road was carrying a steady stream of settlers into the western territories. Kentucky was filling up, and newcomers were attracted to the wilderness north of the Ohio River. They quote an English immigrant, Morris Birkbeck, who wrote this description of the traffic: "Old America seems to be breaking up and moving westward. We are seldom out of sight, as we travel on this grand track towards the Ohio, of family groups, behind and before us, some with a view to a particular spot; close to a brother, perhaps, or a friend, who has gone before, and reported well of the country. Many, like ourselves, when they arrive in the wilderness, will find no lodge prepared for them......" They also cover the fact that, in the rush to settle Kentucky, between the various land speculators and their various ties to the British and the eventual USA, dealings with the Indians, and faulty survey work, along with faulty records, many of the original settlers who hacked out a homestead in Kentucky, had to fight in the courts to keep their property. Many of them ended up being renters on lands they thought they owned because the courts favored the rich speculators in their decisions. The country North of the Ohio was opened on the "Wisconsin Rule". The land was surveyed into townships before is was sold. After their bad experiences in Kentucky, this had to be a powerful incentive to pull stakes and move across the river.

Went straight to Putnam Co. 2nd Migration--Civil War refugees from Missouri--1862-1865 Slavens branch that had settled in MO and were Union, came up and "stayed over" with the Putnam Slavens relations until the war was over. At one point area up around Portland Mills was abundant with Slavens doctors--4 of them Somebody on this list once quoted a county history of some sort about the Scotch Irish that moved into the area- how they generally moved in large family groups, were heavily religious, independent sorts. Anyone remember this?

I expect that some Gibsons where left with their property in each of these locations, but as they are collateral relatives, I have not searched them out yet. McNorton (McNaughton, same pronounciation) SC to Putnam Co. IN to Montgomery Co. IN to Jefferson Co. KS They seem positively sedentary compared to the Gibsons.
