    1. [INPUTNAM] Cemetery on Fillmore Road
    2. Steve Miller
    3. Lori; Are you asking about the small grave yard that is surrounded by black rough iron and looks like it has 2 or three stones standing? This grave yard is on the north side of the road? I think this is called the Shoptaugh Cemetery. My 1990 Road map of Putnam County says this may be called the Salem Cemetery. The information I have on this cemetery is as follows; " This Cemetery is located near the center of section 18-14-3, approximately 2 -2 1/2 miles west of Fillmore and is on 50s (Also known as the Fillmore Road) in Marion twp. Flinn Mary Kinsler Wife of John d.April 8, 1870 41y 11m 21d Flinn John d. Jan 23,1879 Shoptaugh Benjamin b. Mar. 17,1841 d.Feb 22,1913 Shoptaugh Bertha b. Sept 17,1846 d. Dec. 19,1935 Shoptaugh Johnny- son of B.F. and B.A. b. Sept 5,1874 d Mar. 3,1877" I gathered the above info. from the Putnam County Health Department in the Greencastle Courthouse.

    3. Lisa; I believe I have the answer to your question about the grave on the Fillmore road. I found this info. in the County Health office one time I was digging around there. The health office had lists of cemeteries in the county and I made copies of most of them. The one you are asking about was called the "Nathaniel Cunningham Grave", located at the NW1/4 SE1/4 section 13-14-4. Approximately 3 1/2 miles east of Greencastle in Greencastle Twp. In addition th Nathaniel's name this listing says the following " N. - VA Regiment Revolutionary War. Government Stone This is the only grave evident at this location. The Heirs of Nathaniel Cunningham is listed complete record book B in the Putnam County Clerk's office were as follows: Elizabeth Cunningham - Widow Alexander Cunningham Amelia Cunningham Daniel Butler Sally Butler - Wife of Daniel Jeremiah Stiles Susannah Stiles -Wife of Jeremiah Absalom Brown Elizabeth Brown -Wife of Absalom William Bailey Lucinda Bailey - Wife of William John W. Cunningham Benjamin Cunningham This same reference states that Nathaniel died in 1827." Now aren't you sorry you asked. For some reason I want to believe that this grave was moved to Forest Hill Cemetery but I can not find the source for that information right now.

    2. If anyone has the answer to Lisa's question about the single grave on the eastern edge of Greencastle, please post to the list. I am sure there are many of us who would like to know the answer! To add to that question, can anyone shed some light onto the small cemetery that sits fairly close to Fillmore Road, east of where Lisa is indicating? Thanks, Lori C. Goodwin/McHaffie

    2. Richard, Sorry, some errors here--yes, Anna E Brandt did marry Lee Wiley Sinclair, but now I see that doesn't fit your Ann E Sinclair. Also Lee was nephew of my ggreat-grandfather. Too many Sinclairs with same names to keep straight! Am searching for other Ann Sinclairs---there are several in my family data. Becky

    3. Ok, I wasn't going to mention this part unless someone else did because it sounded silly, but my father-in-law said he thought it was someone connected with George Washington! I thought, no way, surely we would KNOW if it was someone who was historically significant, if even in a small way, but if you ALSO remember it as someone important and possibly a soldier, maybe my father-in-law knows what he's talking about after all! I suppose it could just be a Revolutionary War veteren, but if this was someone who was well-known around here, why did no one seem to notice that his headstone was gone? Besides finding out who he was, I'm really curious about when and why the grave was moved, and to where, if that's what happened, and why no one knows anything about it! Doesn't it seem a little strange? > > Hi Lisa, > I don't know who was buried there, but I remember a grave being there > I remember asking my grandpa about it when I was younger. For some reason > I keep thinking he told me it was the grave of a soldier but I'm not sure! > I remember him speaking of the person as if they were important but that > is all that I can remember about it. > I too would like to know what happened to the grave that used to be there. > Thanks!! > Donna > > > --------------------------------------------- > This message was sent by a Customer of Wings > Communication, http://www.wico.net, > using Wings' web based email. > > > >

    2. Richard, Anna E Brandt married Lee Wiley Sinclair who was the brother of my ggreat-grandfather, Rev. John Patterson Sinclair. Lee and John were sons of Isaac S. Sinclair. Anna Eliza Brandt, b. 1 Jan. 1836 and d. 3 May 1873. Lee then married Caroline Persise, d. 22 Nov. 1924. Lee, was b. 18 Feb. 1836, and died 7 Sept. 1916. Lee, Anna and Caroline are all buried at Crown Hill Cemetery, Salem, Washington Co. IN. Try the following site for information about Lee and Anna. Very interesting information about his West Baden Hotel project. http://jadecat.com/famdocs/sinclairctyhst.html#lw Also this page has data about Lee and both wives. However, they are listed in reverse order of the marriages. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~herbarkin/wright%20html/d0004/g000005 1.html#I50054 E-mail if I can be of further help on the Sinclair family. 1. [INPUTNAM] grave on Fillmore Road?
    2. Jim and Lisa Trump
    3. This is a little off the subject (it's not a genealogical question, but it IS a Putnam co. question). My father-in-law and I were talking the other day about which were the oldest cemeteries in the area, and he asked if I knew what happened to the grave on Fillmore Road. He said that after you turn off of 240 onto Fillmore Rd., and go past the factories (the empty Technotrim building, Lear, and whatever that newer one is called that's right beside Lear) that there used to be a headstone there, just one, right past that third factory, on the right-hand side of the road, before you go around that sharp turn to the right. He said it was fairly close to the edge of the road, maybe 10-15 ft. back, and he thought it was someone "important," but didn't know who. Does anyone know who was buried there, and if the grave has been moved or if the stone just fell over? I don't really recall a grave there, but he seems sure about it, so now I'm curious. Thanks! Lisa

    1. [INPUTNAM] Re: Daniel Smith
    2. Nell, no Daniel Smith in 1850 index for Putman at Ancestry.com but I tried Morgan Co., and found this, however, the 1850 does not tell the relationship of people: 1850-Morgan- Adams Twp., line 5, household #169: Daniel Smith, 40, farmer, born IN. or IA. {I can't tell if it is an n or a} Mary, 38, TN. Rebecca, 17 Elisabeth, 13 Mary, 11 John, 8 Isaac, 4 Hannah, 2 All children born IN. or IA. Do you think this is right one? There were 3 other Daniel Smith in Morgan. I did not check Owen. 1. [INPUTNAM] 1850 Putnam County, Indiana, Census
    2. Hello Folks: Is there a kind soul out there that has access to the 1850 Putnam County census that would do a look up for me? I am looking for all names, ages, relationships that appear in the household of a Daniel Smith that I hope is listed. This Daniel Smith married Mary (Polly) Langwell in 1831. I am guessing that Mary was probably about 17 to 21 at the time of her marriage to Daniel, so in 1850 she would have been about 36 to 45 years old. There were at least two Daniel Smiths in the 1840 Putnam County census, so I have no idea which, if either was the husband of Mary (Polly). It is also possible that this couple was listed in the Owen or Morgan County census for 1850, but I have not been able to look at those records either. I found the death of a Daniel A. Smith, age 1, who died in Putnam County in 1850 in that mortality schedule, but this child was probably too young to belong to my Mary and Daniel. Mary was a member of the Deer Creek Baptist Church in Putnam County in 1830 and she had sisters Elizabeth Dobbs, wife of Joel, and Hannah Baugh, wife of Christopher. Allied families are Walters/Waters, Bowman, Ogle. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Nell

    1. RE: [INPUTNAM] Roberts/Hanks/Wilson in Putnam Co.
    2. Jim Phelps
    3. I've been looking for my ancestor Andrew Jackson Roberts (often went by "Jack") for quite some time. His second wife was Rebecca Wilson (1848-1871), possibly the daughter of Abraham & Mary Wilson. They married in 1871. No children are known, but given the dates (married in January, died in September) it's possible she died in childbirth. Jack's first wife was Amanda "Mandy" M. Hanks (1837-1869). They married in 1858, and had 3 kids: Eliza Lou Roberts (b.1859) Willie (?) Roberts (b. 1863, died as an infant) Steven A. Roberts (b.1866) At some point after Amanda died, the two kids were given to her parents, Stephen England Hanks and Elizabeth M. Kitchens, and were raised by them. They appear with them in the 1870 census of Putnam Co. Rebecca and Amanda are both buried in the Brick Chapel Cemetery, back behind the church. There is a broken-off stone between them - could this be the resting place of Andrew Jack Roberts? All I really know about him was that he was born around 1835, possibly in Kentucky. The only census I've found him in was the 1860 Parke Co. Census, right after he and Amanda married. By 1870 I've been unable to find any trace of him. Next to Amanda's stone is a tiny stone for her infant son, which appears to read "Willie". Pictures and more info at my page www.ruark.org/roberts-1.html. Any advice on how to proceed and find out more about Jack would be very appreciated!

    1. [INPUTNAM] Jorden Grider/Emily Leaton
    2. I have a copy of the marriage certificate of the above mentioned. They were married 4 Oct 1854 in Putnam Co., IN. There is a possible mistake on the certificate as it was issued 3 Oct 1853 and the certification by the minister states he performed the marriage 4 Oct 1854....my thoughts are he filled this out and filed it after the first of the year and mistakenly put 1854 instead of 1853...just my thoughts. When I got the marriage certificate for my family this one was at the top of the page in the book so I got them both. The Grider/Leaton names are not in my family. I know nothing more of these families. If anyone would like this certificate contact me privately. All you will need to do is send a self-addressed stamped envelope and I will send it to you.
