Thanks to all who responded to my question about Indians in Indiana. The site Steve Miller suggested is a great short history, very well told. Pat Obrist http://www.franklincoll.edu/Jouweb/pub/bridges/miami.htm I found this link very interesting regarding Indiana in Indiana and there is a whole department at Indiana University doing research about the Indians in Indiana. I remember reading somewhere about the tribes that lived around this area but now I can't recall where I saw it. If you're interested, I'll look around for it--I think I wrote down which tribes were nearest to central Indiana. 1822 seems kind of late for there to be a lot of them, though. Does anybody on the list know when the Ten O'Clock Treaty was signed? Didn't it have something to do with the Indians? Hello Friends, I've just had another breakthrough today. Henry BAILEY is the son of Richard John BAILEY and Emily FREDERICK. John and Emily married on 28 March 1833 in Jefferson Co., KY. They had three children: John F. BAILEY, b. 02 May 1835 in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., KY.; m. Susan BROWNING, of Thompson & Caroline REEVES. Margaret BAILEY, b. 1836 in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., KY. Henry C. BAILEY, b. 04 July 1837 in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., KY; m. Caroline BROWNING. Emily died in 1841 and the family went to Illinois to visit relatives. By 1850 Henry and Margaret are in Putnam Co., with Uncle Johney ROBINSON and Reuben and Hannah WARFORD SMITH. Richard John BAILEY, b. 1812 in Shelby Co., KY was the son of Joseph BAILEY and Elizabeth WARFORD, Hanna's sister. New sources: "Warford, Fisher, Kaes~Kuhl, Stout, Pinkney," by Laurence Lee Hill. "Trail of John WARFORD in America," Willard Warford. Does anyone know what happened to Margaret after 1850? Thanks, Pat Bishop Obrist
Hello, friends! I read a statment in a book about the Warford family: Susan [SMITH, daughter of Reuben SMITH & Hanna WARFORD] arrived in Marion Township, Putnam County, Indiana with her parents on October 6, 1822. She was two years old. There her parents found the country comparatively unsettled with white people but well inhabited with the Indians. Does anyone know of the Indians in Putnam Co., IN? It surprised me as I had not heard this before. Thanks, Pat Bishop Obrist
I'm looking for information on Abraham Amstutz, who was living in Putnam County in the early 1860's. I don't know when he was born or when he died or where, all I know is that he had a daughter, Elizabeth, born in Putnam County in 1862. Does anyone out there know anything about this family? Thanks! __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Web Hosting - Let the expert host your site http://webhosting.yahoo.com

Thank you for the responses, the history of the nail mill was very interesting. That also would explain why several of my ancestors moved into the Muncie area from Greencastle. This list is great to help some of us novices about your community. Thanks again. Carolyn Elliott Kelly Kelly/Hanley/Dothery
From Putnam County History: Indiana Sesquicentennial, 1966... "Greencastle's largest 19th century industry, however, was not based on local products. In 1867 an Iron and Nail Company "for smelting and rolling iron and manufacturing nails" was set up with a capital of $60,000 with John F. Darnell [should read James F. Darnall] as president. Its main buildings were south of what was later known as the Pennsylvania Railroad, between Locust and Bloomington Streets. Its main building was 170 by 180 feet, and others were added. Operations were under the supervision of of John Lundy of Pittsburgh. It soon employed 125 men, and 200 men by 1878. Its production in 1876 was 250 kegs of nails of all sizes weekly. According to a New Albany paper, in 1869 the three largest iron and nail mills in the state were in New Albany, Terre Haute and Greencastle. Its prosperity decreased in the 1880's as it continued to manufacture iron nails while other factories were turning to steel. In the middle 1890's it moved to Muncie, attracted by the natural gas discovered there and the inducements offered by that city."

The 1880 Fed census for Putnam CO., shows James Kelly, age 21 and his brothers, Edward KElly, age 19, and Charles, age 17, as nail feeder. Their father Patrick, age 57, was listed as a laborer. What Company in the Greencastle area would have used nail feeders. Any other info on these three men or their families would be helpful. Mother Bridget, age 47, Kate, age 15, later married Tom Hanley in Putnam Co.; Mike age 12 and John age 8. These children were in school at that time, what schools were in the area at the time? Thank you for any help with this family that some moved to Delaware Co., and later Vigo Co., IN Carolyn Elliott KElly crkelly105@aol.com
My guess would be the manufacturer of Nails, OR a construction firm. For those interested in the Jennings family of Putnam County. John S. Jennings was a notary public in Putnam County, Indiana. As such, he witnessed affidavits of war veterans who were applying for government benefits. A personal letter of his became intermingled with the application file of a veteran and is now misfiled at National Archives under the name of the other man. Here is Mr. Jennings' letter addressed to the Commissioner of Pensions, Washington, DC : Greencastle Dec 1850 Dear Sir I wish to ask you in behalf of my Mother, if you please, to see if she is not intitled to land under the late law granting land to certain officers & soldiers. My Father was engaged in the wars against the Indians in Tennessee in 1792 his company was raised in Sullivan County Tennessee. John Jennings was the name of my father. Mother thinks he was discharged at Knoxville Tennessee, she has not the proof at hand of the time he was in the service. If the rolls are in the [war] department she can make her declaration. I am perhaps taxing you more than I ought but I hope I shall be able to do a favor for you in return. Yours Respectfully John S. Jennings [witness:] Hon. E. W. McGaughry [On the reverse of Mr. Jennings letter:] No. 39667 Dec 26/50 [meaning 1850] If the Public records afford the information sought to be obtained by the within letter, you will please cause the same to be communicated to me. I requested information about John P Sinclair--let me clarify, this is John who would be about 68 years old in the 1870 census. He is the uncle of another John P Sinclair, born about 1830, in the same county. John P. Sinclair, b 1802, was married a second time to Louisa. He died in 1879 in Cloverdale. What became of Louisa and family after that? Any information on this second family would be very helpful to me. Becky PK9345@aol.com
Does anyone have information about John P Sinclair and family in the 1870 Census in Putnam County? I believe he may be in the Greencastle or Cloverdale township. Would like to know names of family and data listed, if anyone would be so kind as to find for me. Thanks Becky
