I am trying to establish, for membership in DAR, that Joseph Thomas Piercy, born April 4, 1831, was the son of George Washington Piercy and Sally Case Moore. George and Sally were married Mar 22, 1821. Their other children were: Jacob born 1822 Abby born 1824 Thursa born 1826 Hannah born abt 1830 Sarah born abt 1833 Amanda born abt 1837. They lived in Putnam County and were buried at the Reed Cemetery there. Any information on this family would be much appreciated. Also, is there any way to access and read the archives for this mailing list? Connie Norheim
Dear readers I am new to your list and USA research but am progressing slowly. I have received a wealth of advice and suggestions from you good people but still learning. Below is part of a statement by Margaret Howell (daughter of Patrick Donnelly) made in 1899 in the Orphans Court, Philadelphia. quote Q Then you came to this country with your mother A Yes, sir Q About twenty-eight years ago, you say ? A About twenty-eight years, yes Q Where did you go ? A Out to Indiana, to my father's Q Whereabouts in Indiana ? A Greencastle Q How long did you live there ? A From October until the 1st of May or the latter end of April. Q Did you go immediately to Greencastle on your arrival in this country ? A Yes, sir Q And you remained there, you say, about eight months ? A About eight or nine months. To the 1st of May, I guess it was, from October end quote The date of Margaret's visit (28 years from 1899 date of statement) would make it about 1871 so I would like to try and see if I could locate a copy of a relevant census return for Patrick. I do not know whether your 1870 census has been indexed but if it has and anyone has access to it and could spare the time could they see if there is any record of a Patrick Donnelly born c1822 in Ireland of Irish parents - emigrated c1847/1849. Married, occupation either labourer or tanner/manufacturer of leather. I appreciate that I am asking a great deal and the details are rather skimpy but this returrn would be of tremendous help to me. Thank you and kind regards to all Eileen - Liverpool, UK

I have Sarah Thomas in the 1850 Clinton Twp, Putnam Co Census with six McGill children - Harrison b. 1830, David, Mary, Jane, William & Edward. I'm trying to find out the link between her and the children - mother or other relative? I believe she may be the daughter of John Miller, son of Henry Miller of Clinton County. There is a Sarah Miller listed as a grandaughter in a court action dated 1850 in Clinton County. Also listed in the action is a Sarah Miller Magill w. of Cyrus who would be a cousin to this Sarah Thomas. Any insights would be helpful. Any idea where she and the children were by 1860? I don't have the census for that year. Thanks in advance.
Hi All, I believe I have just located two "lost" branches of my Shoemaker family this week. They "went west" in the mid-1800s, but apparently only as far as this county <g>. You have a wonderful website, with lots of helpful info, but none of the links I've tried to lookup volunteers and the webmaster have worked--all my mail has been bounced back. Therefore, could someone with the county histories please check for me on these two families? I found the two ladies in whom I'm interested in the cemetery records, but need verification these are who I think they are. First is Sarah HALFHILL (1805-1892) , wf of Nicholas, buried at Salem Cem and the second is Mary RILEY (1807-1882), wife of Silas J, bur at Putnamville Cem. (Cem record says 1881, death rec index says 1882). I believe these two ladies to be sisters, daughters of George and Rachel HALFHILL SHOEMAKER of Gallia and Scioto Counties OH, formerly of PA. Mary has a daughter mentioned in an OH courtcase, Rachel WOODALL, b 1841. Her other children as given in the cemetery records are Joshua RILEY 1838-1928, Sarah J RILEY 1840-1935, prob Daniel RILEY 1843-1863, James K RILEY 1844-19=871 and John W RILEY 1836-1868. Known children of Sarah are James, Jacob and William HALFHILL. Any information on these families appreciated, and am hopeful there will be a bio in at least one of the family histories. Thanks for any help...Tacy Shoemaker Lewis, Colorado
It's really too bad the the local Hist. or Gen.Soc. couldn't step up and volunteer to go through these old records and remark them.....What a good project that would be for them and certainly beneficial to all.......wish I lived closer I would certainly volunteer my time to work on a project like that......... > She also told me that she didn't doubt that the original case file > existed. I am trying to find any information you have on this.. Hello I am trying to find any records of Van Denman Thompson. I know he died in Greencastle, he taught at DePauw University, he even has a building named after him. HOW WONDERFUL IT WOULD BE IF SOME LOCAL HISTORY GROUP (VOLUNTEERS) DECIDED TO HAVE A PROJECT AND GO THROUGH ALL OF THOSE OLD BOXES OF FILES AND MAKE AN INDEX FOR EACH BOX. I WISH I LIVED IN THE AREA, I MIGHT SEE IF THE COUNTY WOULD AUTHORIZE ME TO HELP DO SUCH A THING. Nell

I mistakenly sent this info to an individual. It was meant for everyone. I have been reading about he frustrations some of us are having with records that "don't exist". We know they do, but... Here is a possible explanation: A few years ago I was looking for divorce records from the very early 1900s. I have a copy of the court transcript (their notes, if you will) but was looking for the actual case file. The sweet lady who did the actual digging for me there in Grencastle sent me the info she could find. She also told me that she didn't doubt that the original case file existed. The problem is that many years ago the courthouse, or part of it, was painted. Some employee there took it upon themselves to remove the tags/label from the boxes that hold the older records. When the painting was done, the boxes were never re-marked. Due to budget cuts over the years, they do not have the manpower to do much time-consuming digging. She assured me, however, that if someone wanted to dig through the boxes themselves, it would be allowed. Just dress for some very dirty work. I have all of the identifying information, but cannot get there to search through the boxes myself. I don't know that this info is a solution to anyone, but is offered as an explanation for the "there is no record" problem. Debbi __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Of course they will cut where it hurts those who pay taxes.. How about welfare and other items that are unnecessary. Schools always suffer too!!! Just my viewpoint!!

I would like to add a note here.. I found the price to be more than fair.. In fact too cheap to be worth their trouble.. 50 cents per copy.. Why not charge more? Let's make it worth their time.. and not ask taxpayers to pay the bill. I would have been happy to pay $5.00 for a copy.. Make it worth their time. They are doing me (a non-resident) a favor. Then it becomes a self-supporting issue. I am not in favor of more taxes to pay for those "using" the services.. Ellie S.
Lisa, I think it is a common problem. Just like everything else, funds have been slashed on the federal and state level and the employees are fewer and have more work. They have a bill before the house in FL. to move some state records to universities, expecting them to fund it and access to it privately. If anyone lives in FL. and would like to sign a petition against this, email me and I will send you the info. Genealogy has become quite a hobby across America so they also have many more requests for information. Most county records are maintained by the county and funded mostly with local taxes. So, it's a good idea to remember when they help us we aren't paying for their time...and it's not our right but borders on asking a favor. I have been to Putnam three times looking for info...and other county seats...Greencastle is a beautiful little town with mostly accommodating, gracious people..but have "stinkers"..or perhaps just busy people on the day we show up! One more thing I would like to add. Once you (collectively speaking) obtain records it's important to share these with as many researchers as possible. Afraid that many believe..."I paid for it..it's mine" ..."or I know something the rest don't know".. this isn't in the spirit of the hobby and slows us all up, going after records that have already been found. The goal is to climb the correct tree...not who gets to the top first. Happy hunting! Linda FL

I've heard SO many different answers from people trying to get records (or copies) from our courthouse! Some people I know have said they were very helpful there and went to great lengths to help them find what they needed, and I've talked to others who said no one there seemed the slightest bit interested in helping, and even told them certain records didn't exist that many of us KNOW are there. Maybe it depends on who you talk to in the office? Doesn't seem fair, since any business we have there should be just as important as whatever their "regular" job entails. Aren't they ALL "public" records? Have a lot of you had trouble with this? Is it just Putnam county, or is this a common problem?
