    2. From "From Needmore to Prosperity; Hoosier Place Names in Folklore History" by Ronald L. Baker: This town was laid out in 1828 by Jacob Durham and named for Russell Township, in which it is located. A post office, with Durham as postmaster, was established on March 9, 1832. From December 5, 1882 to September 3, 1885, the post office was called Darter, for a local family. William Darter was postmaster during most of this period. Roberta

    3. Hello List, I am looking for information concerning John C. AKERS and his wife Mary E. LONG. I do know that John C. Akers was living with his son, Charles E. AKERS, in Washington in 1930 and that his wife died in 1901. I did find a listing of a John C. AKERS in the Indiana State Prison and the information in the 1910 census matches that of the John C. AKERS who married Mary E. LONG. I was wondering if anyone had any information on how Mary E. LONG-AKERS died or why John C. AKERS was in prison, as she was a sister to my ggggrandmother. I do know she is buried in the Cloverdale Cem. I did see a Deb Barker Rawlings as a contact for the AKERS surname on the Putnam Co., Rootsweb site, but her email address listed there is no longer valid. Sincerely, David Anderson

    2. SHARON RAYNOR
    3. Hi, My name is Sheri Thompson Raynor, and I have been working on the Thompson Geneaolgy for my family. I have traced from my Grandfather (Fred O Thompson) back to Andrew K Thompson who would be my Great, Great Great Grandfather. I have been doing pretty well as I have found most of his family to be in Jackson, Putnam,Co., Indiana or in the vicinty.............But I have hit a dead end for the last couple of months in being able to go back any futher. I know that Andrew was born in Kentucky in 1818, and moved to Indiana somewhere around 1841, as I found he married Sarah Green Richardson in 1841 in Hendricks Co., Indiana (my Great Great Great Grandmother.), and she also was born in Kentucky. I was able to find 6 children (all born in Indiana) one of them being John Adams Thompson who would be Freds Grandfather. (my Great Great Grandfather. John Adams Thompson married Sarah T Smith and they had two daughters, Eva J Thompson, Lane. and Margaret Ann Thompson Richardson (Maggie)! , my Grandfather Fred O Thompsons Mother. I'm sure this Richardson (spouse) is not related to Sarah Green Richardson. My Grandfather took his Mothers maiden name Thompson, as he was born out of wedlock.... His Grandfather John Andams is on his Birth Certificate as his Father. I am unable to get a birth or death certificate for Andrew K Thompson or Sarah as I just can't find out who their parents were (although Andrews Father is from Pa and his Mother from N J.) I would like to find the siblings also, ( I think mabe one of Andrews could be a Hugh Thompson, born in abt. 1805 in Pa.) I found him in Cloverdale, Putnam Indiana. If you could tell me the best places I could contact for any of this information I would sure be greatful ! I live in Idaho so it is hard for me to travel at this point in my life. I have been going to the LDS church and they have been helpful but suggested I get on the internet to see what help I can find.... Thank you so much for any help you could give me---- Sheri PS.... I did just find where Andrew and Sarah were buried THANKS TO YOUR SITE!!! They were buried in the New Maysville Cemetery (new part, east side) Andrew b. Dec 31,1818 - d.Aug 14 1884 and Sarah b.Feb 26, 1819 - d.Dec 11, 1892.

    1. Re: [INPUTNAM] Kelley family
    2. Jo Anna, I believe the Fannie you mention as the wife of James Kelley, was Fannie Moore daughter of Thomas out of Montgomery County, Kentucky prior to removing to Putnam County, Indiana. In early land records for Putnam County I found a series of deeds where Thomas sells/transfers land for "love and affection" to his daughters and son. Here is a quick note from my files for the land he deeded to Fanny Kelly: Thomas Moore sold to Fanny Kelly for love and affection on August 11, 1827, land described as SW Sec 15 Twp13N Rng 4W [page 265 Volume A]. Thomas Moore had purchased this land 1 Apr 1824. The land deeds stated the grantors were Thomas Moore and his wife Ann however, I have not proven that Ann was the mother of the children. The land that was transferred for love and affection was the land that was from his original land patent that was issued in 1824 to "Thomas Moore of Montgomery County, Kentucky." You are most welcome to contact me directly on this family. I welcome another researcher to dialog with and exchange information on this Moore line. 1. WILSON family in Floyd Township
    2. Meredith Thompson
    3. I'm looking for anyone who's researching the family of Rev. Charles A. Wilson (b. about 1868 in IN; d. after 1910). He was in the class of 1889 at Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute (at the time he listed his hometown as Groveland, Putnam County, Indiana). He was the son of John Wilson & Nancy I. Lewis, who married Feb. 1, 1860 in Putnam County, Indiana. They were in Floyd Township, Putnam County, Indiana for the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Charles had brothers Delana C. (b. about 1866 in IN) and Gilbert A. (b. about 1873 in IN). According to an alumni directory, Charles was a minister at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Illinois from 1896-1910. He is in the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Chicago. He had a wife Adela (b. Feb. 1870 in IL, d. between 1900-1910) and sons Leland A. (b. 1895 in IL) and Allen D. (b. Aug 1898 in IL). By 1911 Charles was living in Chanute, Neosho County, Kansas and according to a family tree posted online, he may have remarried to a Julia Bunyan in 1912, had children Ruth Louise and Alvin Chambers Wilson, and died in Casper, Wyoming in 1934. The reason I am interested is that the Indiana Genealogical Society was given a photo of Rev. Wilson, and we would really like to give it to someone who is researching this family. If you are interested, please contact me directly--thanks! Please hit your delete button. For listers who live and research in Indiana, there is a golden opportunity to increase our access to public records and to expand on a patron-friendly atmosphere that exists at the Indiana State Archives. For several years Dr Alan January, State Archivist, has been Co-Director on the Indiana Commission on Public Records (ICPR) with Connie Hume and Judge John Newman. The ICPR is the agency which creates and/or distributes state forms and documents. The State Archives has been part of this agency for a number of years. Governor-Elect Mitch Daniels will select his candidate for ICPR Director. As a long-time volunteer at the State Archives, I feel comfortable suggesting to you that you consider an email to Governor-Elect Mitch Daniel's website on behalf of Alan January's candidacy. That website is: http:///www.mygovmitch.com/nominate.asp Besides including your personal information, you will need to include the following: Dr Alan January 5638 N Delaware St Indianapolis IN 46220-3018 317-253-4071 [email protected] Under Dr. January's leadership the volunteer program has grown from a handful to more than 40 volunteers working to make Indiana records available to Hoosier researchers. Several databases have been made available on-line, and I believe several more would be on-line quickly under Dr January's leadership. Researchers could request copies of documents the existence of which is currently unknown to them. The State Archives has vast collections to pique the interest of many. I sincerely believe much progress would be made if Dr January were Director of the ICPR In a day when access to many vital records is being legislated away, let's take a positive step toward disclosure of public records to which we can have access.
