    1. Body found in 1906
    2. John German
    3. About 21 Feb 1906 a body was found strewn for about two miles along a railroad track east of Greencastle. I would like very much to obtain copies of newspaper articles about this gruisome discovery on that day and perhaps several days later. Thanks [email protected]

    1. current situation at the Indiana State Archives
    2. Sharon and Joe Mills
    3. This letter was written by one of the 41 current volunteers at the Indiana State Archives. Last year we contributed volunteers hours to equal 2 1/2 paid employees. I did not write the letter, but I support this position totally. Please act if you value or use the Archives. Sharon Mills WARNING! Records For Your Genealogical Research and historical documents that chronicle indiana history Are At Risk Background: During his term, Governor O’Bannon appointed Co-Directors of the Indiana Commission on Public Records (ICPR). Dr. Alan January was placed in charge of The Indiana State Archives and Records Center. The other Co-Director (CD2) was placed in charge of Forms Management and Micrographics (basically the downtown operation) as well as budget matters. They were jointly responsible for Records Preservation. (See for more info.) While overseeing the operation of the Archives, Dr. January has nurtured a volunteer program that has allowed researchers the opportunity to access records, both on site and via the internet, that were previously not available - primarily because the bare-bones Archives staff did not have the time to process those records. Under Dr. January’s guidance, the volunteers have broken records each year for the number of hours worked toward making this information available to you. When Governor Daniels took office, one of the demands placed on him was to appoint directors of many State agencies and offices, including the ICPR. Until such time as he made those appointments, the current directors remained in place. Apparently at some time this year (probably in January) CD2 was appointed as Acting Director over the entire ICPR operation. I say ‘apparently’ because at no time was anyone at the Indiana State Archives, employee or volunteer, officially notified of this change in leadership. Why should this change concern you? CD2 has made some decisions since acting as interim director that potentially have a negative effect on your genealogy research: · CD2 denied the acceptance of a delivery of confidential state records. These records were consequently left on an open receiving dock at the Government Center downtown until the Governor’s Office was asked to intervene. · CD2 had planned to destroy more than fifty skids of historic and valuable newspapers even though the ICPR had previously made a signed agreement to store them for the Indiana State Library. · CD2 has asked State Archives employees (purportedly in an effort to get caught up with the backlog created by the lack of sufficient employees) to “sample” records. CD2’s intent, in one example, is to randomly pull complete records from the Indiana Dept. of Corrections, while keeping only the photo and record cards (not the entire record) for the remainder of the prisoners. Imagine if the full records of notorious figures like John Dillinger, Stephen Judy and Mike Tyson – just to name a few – were not part of those “sample” records. imagine if the full records of one of your relatives was not included in those samples. Because of the interim appointment, CD2 seems to be the obvious candidate for permanent appointment to the Director position. The State’s fiscal year begins July 1st, which means the funds may be available to fill the position permanently, so the clock is ticking. As volunteers who devote time to preserving these historic records, it is most discomforting to imagine a director who does not place the necessary value on the retention of this priceless information. Remember, these are PUBLIC records, which means they are YOUR records. Are these examples of how you want your records maintained? What can you do? If this issue is important to you, please take the time to write, e-mail or call any or all of the following contacts and request that the current Acting Director of the ICPR NOT be selected as the permanent Director. In addition, if you have knowledge of Dr. Alan January’s dedication to preserving our past, please feel free to ask that he be placed in the position of permanent ICPR Director. 2. James R. Baker, Jr.
    3. Does anyone have access to the records for Bainbridge Cemetery? If so, I would like to know if James M. and Phebe Baker are buried there, and if they are, I would like to have the dates. They both seem to have vanished after 1870. A probable brother to James is buried in Bainbridge so they might also be there. Thanks, Jim . . James R. 3. I received this information this morning. I hope it will be helpful to Trail descendants. According to page 114 of the Owen County Cemetery book published by the Major Abraham Owen DAR Chapter, Reeves Cemetery is in Section 28, Jackson Tw, Owen Co. Mary and Baswell Trail have a double marker. Mary died 1853, no dates for Baswell. On page 116: "Reeves or Reaves Cemetery was moved from an area which was covered by the Cataract Lake to a place which is part of the Cunot Cemetery. It is now in Section 28 and could be considered a part of Cunot or Needmore Cemetery, Jackson Tw, Owen County. Sharon Bryant

    1. Passing Of A Pioneer ~ J. H. West
    2. The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa Thursday, March 18, 1909 H.W. GITTINGER received a telegram from Omaha, on Saturday, stating that his uncle, J.H. WEST, had just died at the home of his son, C.L. WEST, in that city.  The funeral was held there on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and the remains taken to Flagler, Colorado, his late home, for interment.  He  was one of the pioneers of Lucas County, coming from Putnam County, Indiana, and settling in Washington Township, in 1848.  Several years since he removed from Lucas County and later settled at Flagler, Colorado.  Not long since his physician told him that it would be better for him to change climate and get into a lower altitude but his trouble, coupled with the decline of old age, was of such a nature that it proved unavailing, and the results were as above.  He leaves a wife and a son, C.L. WEST, of Omaha, and a daughter, MRS JOHNSTON, of Flagler, Colo.  Of the original family there is but one surviving member, W.A. WEST, of Eureka, Montana.  Deceased was near 85 years of age. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert May 30, 2005 [email protected] http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas/Main.htm posted at this site with Nancee's permission

    1. Baker
    2. James R. Baker, Jr.
    3. Need information on the following Bakers. All 4 were married in Wayne Co., then went to Putnam. I THINK at least 3 of them may have been brothers, raised by Nicholas and Susan Connett. That's what I'm trying to prove. James M. Baker, wife Phebe (there in 1860-1870, then vanished) Henry Baker, wife Susan (there in 1850, then vanished) Lorenzo Baker, wife Eliza ( there briefly in 1851 then went to Gasconade Co., Missouri, died 1870's) Sylvester Baker, wife Hulda (there 1850 through 1880, probably died there about 1881) No census help needed. They have been thoroughly researched on the census. I need help on a local level, if possible. Thanks, Jim . . James R. Baker, Jr. Free Genealogy Databases http://www.jrbakerjr.com .

    1. DNA Tests
    2. James R. Baker, Jr.
    3. I would urge all Bakers to get the Baker DNA Test. The cost is about $100 through the Group. It's simple to do. They mail you a test kit. You swab the inside of your cheek, put the swab inside the bottle, mail it back, and wait for the results. A male named Baker must take the test. A group of 300 Baker researchers are trying to find who connects to whom, thus allowing the sharing of family information. We welcome any Baker's world wide to join us. Please join us at the Baker Ancestors group. Surnames in Project: Baker, Bakker, Beaker, Boecher, Le Baker Requirements: Since a Surname Project in essence traces members of a family that share a common surname, and females (a) don't carry their father's Y-DNA, and (b) acquire a new surname by the way of marriage, in order to be relevant to the Surname Project, the tested individual must be a male that wants to check his paternal line (father's father's father's...). The test to be ordered is either the Y-DNA12, Y-DNA25 or Y-DNA37, and females should look for a brother or cousin with that surname to be tested. Females can also order a test for themselves, which will be the mtDNA or mtDNAPlus, but the results of this test cannot be tied to the Surname Project. For more information: http://www.bakerdna.net/ Note: I have no financial interest in this project. I'm just a Baker who has taken the test and would like to see Bakers from all lines take it. My Test proved a connection that I had been trying to prove with documents for over 40 years. Jim . . . James R. Baker, Jr. Free Genealogy Databases http://www.jrbakerjr.com .

    2. James R. Baker, Jr.
    3. SYLVESTER A. BAKER and Hulda Hendricks were married in 1847 in Wayne county, then later went to Putnam Co. I'm trying to find his parents' names. IF he is the person I think he is, he was raised by a Susan Connett (Conant)who was in Wayne in 1840, then also went to Putnam. His father, John Baker, died in Kentucky and his mother, Susan, remarried to Nicholas Connett. Nicholas died in Ohio. There were two sons, the other may be the LORENZO BAKER who also married in Wayne. He went to Illinois, then Missouri. Any help would be appreciated. I've been trying to find the two sons of John Baker and Susan Connett for a long time. Thanks, Jim
