    3. Krys and all, Those of you who do not live in Putnam Co. are probably not aware of this information. William A. "Billy" Hurst, 87, rural Greencastle, died unexpectedly Monday morning at his residence. Born on his family's farm, he was the son of Paul and Gertrude (Cooper) Hurst. A 1936 graduate of Belle union High School, he attended various agricultural classes at Purdue University. He was a disabled U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a farmer and nationally known Suffolk sheep breeder. A member of Deer Creek Primitive Baptist Church, he had served for many years as church clerk. He and wife Helen also served as administrators and caretakers of Deer Creek Cemetery. He was a former president of the Putnam County Fair Board and had been active in 4-H and Future Farmers of America as a volunteer and mentor for youth, both locally and statewide. He was a member of the Putnam County Sheep Breeders Association, Indiana Sheep Breeders Association, and the National Suffolk Sheep Association, for which he served as secretary for eight years. He received the Distinguished Service Award of the National Suffolk Sheep Assoc. in 1992. He was inducted into the Purdue University Agriculture Hall of Fame in 1981, and in 1985 he and wife Helen were inducted into the Putnam County Agricultural Hall of Fame. Hurst was also a genealogist, a member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, Putnam County Historical Society, National Road Preservation Association, and was a supporter and contributor to the Putnam County Museum. He was also a member of American Legion Post 58 in Greencastle. He married Helen C. Reasor on June 23, 1949. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Helen Newton, and Beverly Ross and husband Reggie, all of Greencastle; three grandchildren one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Victor, Harry, Alton and Carlyle Hurst, sister Pauline Padgett, and a granddaughter. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Greencastle with Rev. Paul Bowen and Elders Kevin Freeman and Tommy Freeman officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Deer Creek Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, Texas, 75231, or the Deer Creek Cemetery Fund, 3265 E. U.S. 40, Greencastle, 46135. I personally will mourn his passing. My father let me go with him to Billy Hurst's farm to pick out some sheep. I was very young, probably 10 or so at the time. It was a big deal to me. I was also being introduced to Mr. Hurst as my Dad's oldest child since he and my father were roughly the same age and had grown up in the same area and both served in WWII. 1. Re: [INPUTNAM] Deer Creek Baptist records
    2. Krys: Perhaps you are also related to the Dobbs family, since some members of the Hurst family were. Joel Dobbs and his wife, Elizabeth Langwill Dobbs, were members of Deer Creek for a short time. Then the Dobbs family and I believe some of the Hursts moved on to Missouri, where Joel died in 1842. Mary (Polly) Langwell, sister of Elizabeth Dobbs, also joined the church in 1830. Polly married a Daniel Smith in Putnam County, Ind. in 1831. Their brother, my g.g. grandfather Hiram C. Langwill married Nancy Walters Brazier in Morgan County, Ind. in 1836 and another brother Thomas Langwill married Elizabeth Gilman in Putnam County c. 1836/37. Would really like to know if anyone on the list has an interest in any of these families. Nell Langwell Gronberg

    3. >Perhaps you are also related to the >Dobbs family, since some members of >the Hurst family were. I'm related to the Dobbs family only by marriage as far as I know. The connection is to Absalom Hurst (1821-1848) who married Orlena Dobbs (1824-1890) This family went from Putnam Co to Missouri. abt 1840. Absalom's father, Elijah, was, I believe, a member of Deer Creek Church. Krys "Writing is no trouble: you just jot down ideas as they occur to you. 2. Robert: I am the one who transcribed the Deer Creek Baptist records and I transcribed everything I received. Dora Mae Turner, the dear lady who passed these documents on to me, does not recall where they came from. The following is an excerpt from one of Dora Mae's latest e-mail messages: "I've had those minutes for so long, I honestly can't remember who sent them to me, but imagine it was Carolyn Yancey (Little) Kent who lives in AR. She had done much research years ago and shared it with me." Robert, since my early relatives seem to have all been Baptists, I am very interested in your web site. My 3rd g. grandparents Thomas and Hannah Brockman Bastin were members of the Lick Fork Baptist Church of Rockingham County, N.C. c. 1790/1817. I have a few excerpts from the minutes of that church which I will be glad to share if you are interested. My great grandparents James and Catherine Keith Langwill were members of the Omaha Baptist Church in Omaha, Arkansas, for about 30 years prior to the death of James in 1915. I have quite a lot of those records and I found that my Langwell family usually was in some kind of trouble with the church. Always had a committee going out there to straighten them out. There is a lot more info in the Arkansas church records than those of the church in Indiana or the one in N.C. although there are some interesting tidbits in the N.C. minutes. Again, my relatives acting out. Nell Langwell Gronberg

    3. In 2000 I was in Putnam Co. and had the good fortune to meet with a Mr. Hurst (I believe his first name was Jesse, but I'm not certain about that). Anyway, he was at the time the secretary for the Deer Creek congregation and had control of all the original records for Deer Creek Church. He happened to have them at his home, because another person had written, asking to see them. He let me look over them, and copy the passages relevant to the people I was searching (Pecks and McCartys). According to Mr. Hurst, the records are stored in a bank deposit box in Cloverdale (at that time at least, and it's probable still the case). There were several years worth of material. I think Mr. Hurst or the current secretary would be amenable to someone transcribing the records. It turns out Mr. Hurst and I are distantly related, but then I'm related to half of Putnam Co. ;-) Krys "Writing is no trouble: you just jot down ideas as they occur to you. 3. Sharon, Thank you so much for sharing this helpful information. I maintain a database of members of the churches of this faith, and will add these names to it. I would also like to have permission to list the surnames of the members on our webpage for Putnam county, on our website: http://www.carthage.lib.il.us/community/churches/primbap/pbl.html We will print out the minutes which were transcribed to your site on paper, for easy reference. Were other minutes copied but not transcribed? or was this all that you were allowed to obtain? Thanks again, Robert

I would like to say thank you to Dora Mae Turner, who provided the records and Nell Langwell Gronberg who transcribed them.

He married before he came to a woman who was called Betsy DENNY, but his children all list their mom as Elizabeth WORLEY and her tombstone in Ragan Cem. lists her also as a WORLEY. There were WORLEYs in Putnam Cty. who are buried next to her in Ragan....... if anyone has ANY info. on WORLEYs in Putnam county circa 1830-1900, I would sure appreciate a shout out! thanks! janet

There were changes in the boundrys with Morgan & Hendricks .Therefore you may want to check those two counties for the 1850 census. There used to be a Mill Creek Township in Putnam along that eastern boundry but no longer. I have made a hand drawn map that shows where the first settlers lived in that 3 county confusing area. I took the original Tract books. When I come across it I will email you if I find any of your names. God Bless You, Candy Smothers [email protected] Date:Sun, 24 Jul 2005 12:12:57 -0400From:"James R.
