    2. Ginger Smith
    3. Hi, I am looking for wills / estate records / probate records for a Nathan Godwin / Goddin / Godden who removed to IN from NC. I am wondering what is the best way to begin my research. Are there index books?Does IN have a State Archives which houses the original documents or do they still remain in the county courthouses? If in the court houses, how does one go about requesting a copy of something? What kinds of genealogy resources does the library have and is there an online catalog? Just looking for personal experience. Thanks so much! Ginger --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail goes everywhere you do. Get it on your phone.

    1. Re: [INPUTNAM] Deer Creek Cemetery
    2. Krys Douglas
    3. My sympathies, Megan; I've done the same thing, but I was looking for Old Bethel! Deer Creek Cemetery is south of US 40 (National Road) and east of Cloverdale. It's been about six years since I was there, and I can't find my Putnam county map, but as I recall the road is about a mile east of the Cloverdale/Greencastle road. There's a brick home on the north side of US 40 less than a quarter mile east of the turn. The cemetery is about 2 miles south of US 40 on the right. It's on a hill and quite lovely. The old Deer Creek Primitive Baptist Church is on the NW corner of the property. If you go to the court house in Greencastle, you can buy, for a very reasonable price, a county map that has every cemetery, church, covered bridge, hamlet, and road on it. Or you can go to the library in Greencastle and look at it and copy the info you need. Good luck. Krys "Writing is no trouble: you just jot down ideas as they occur to you. The jotting is simplicity itself--it is the occurring which is difficult." -- Stephen Leacock

    1. Deer Creek Cemetery
    2. Where in the world is Deer Creek Cemetery? I spent half the afternoon driving around Warren township, but never found it! I did discover a cemetery that I thought might be it and spent awhile looking at graves, and never found the names I was looking for. When I got home, it turns out the particular cemetery I was at was Old Bethel Methodist. (Oh, how I wish there were signs!) Directions for someone not very familiar with Putnam County are appreciated! Megan Heffelman Muncie, IN

    3. Putnam County Gen Web has a WPA list of early marriages. On that list appears the following info: Nutterfield, Sarah E. m. John Pettey July 16, 1852 There is one John Carter listed in Putnam Co. in 1850. However, in that tri-county area of Morgan, Owen and Putnam there's a total of 6 John Carters. If you can provide approximate ages of each in 1850 I'll see if I can locate the correct one. Now, of course, I can't find that information. His sister, if Elisha's son, was Nancy Allen CAIN, married to Arnold CAIN, who came from KY to IN and moved on up to Putnam Co IN. There may be other Allen's of my family who settled there. Any information will be appreciatead on Allen's. Thank you. Phyllis Phillips

    2. The book, From Needmore to Prosperity: Hoosier Place Names in Folklore History, has a little information on Carpentersville. It says it is in Putnam County. "This village was laid out in 1840 and named for Philip Carpenter, who came here about 1831, established a tannery and harness factory, and later became postmaster. The post office was established on May 23, 1850; closed on October 15, 1910. Carpenterville Town is a variant name." Roberta Wysong
