A lot of us assume our families came from a certain country because the name sounds as though it is German. My family came from Switzerland even though the name sounds German. So, this may be what is happening to you. My gggreat grandparents came from Mecklenburg, Later on census they say Germany. After the children grow up, have their own households and fill out later census, they say parents from England and France. So that is how some of those family stories change down thru the years also.
