    3. Hi Michael, Why would husbands and wives go to the Soldier's Home? Are the buildings still there and in use? That is something that the photographs did not tell me. So many of the soldiers in the home near us are still suffering from shell shock. What a sad thing--war--hope we aren't getting ourselves into another one. The following link will take you to a web page about the Indiana Soldiers Home 100 years ago, 1901. Gives the history of the home and has some very nice vintage photos. There is a hospital at the home and from the tower you could see Battle Ground, and Delphi, Indiana. It would have been great to be a twelve year old living close by and go and spend a day listening to the Vets talk about their campaigns. http://www.rootsweb.com/~intippec/SoldiersHome.html Michael DeLorenzo Prince William County Virginia ==== INPULASK Mailing List ==== Visit Pulaski County INGenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpulask/ http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/usa/IN/pulaski.html

    3. Yes, Jerry, there is a soldiers home. Only now, it is officially the "Indiana Veterans' Home". You can find the articles of the Indiana Code governing it's operation here: http://www.in.gov/legislative/ic/code/title10/ar6/ch1.pdf Notice in particular: "Except in cases where the surviving spouse of a veteran shall marry another veteran, the benefits of this chapter shall extend only to surviving spouses and spouses of veterans when the contract of marriage was entered into more than five (5) years prior to the date of death of the veteran." A cousin of mine resided there for a few years before his death in 1970. He was a WWI veteran. (I only discovered this 2 months ago). I have a copy of his probate records, and it is recorded that his estate was short of funds to cover his final bill at the facility, so apparently residence was not offered free to veterans, but indeed incurred an expense by the veteran to reside there. It isn't clear from the probate records how the shortage was covered, but I presume it was by the general fund of the facility. An interesting note about this probate record, for other researchers... even though he died in the Indiana Veterans' Home in Tippecanoe County, this was deemed a "temporary residence" and so his probate records were filed in Marion County, where he was from.
