Surnames: John P & Mary A Miller are buried in Sutton Cemetery, Harrison Township Classification: Cemetery Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3h.2ADI/978.1 Message Board Post: Sue, Your directions are correct to visit Sutton Cemetery, also known as Pingle in Cass Township, however your John P. and Mary A. Miller are buried in Sutton Cemetery in Harrison Township, Pulaski County, Indiana on the east side of the county not the west. The Sutton Cemetery you want is located in the NW corner of Section 28, Harrison Township on the Argyle Bonnell farm. Sutton Cemetery may be seen back west on a knoll from county road 300E (330E) just north of the intersection with county road 235S. Take State Road 14 east out of Winamac till you reach 300E, turn right and head south, this road will turn to the left and right a couple of times and may be marked as 330E, continue to follow south. The cemetery will be located about halfway from this point to the intersection of 235S, as I said it will be to the right side (West) and located on a knoll, may have to ask how to get up to it. The cemetery was read in 1967, if you can reach the cemetery from the east, the rows were read from south to north, your John P. & Mary A. are in the fourth row, about the middle.

Then I switched to MapQuest.com for the local roads. It looks like I could go north on US 421 out of MEDARYVILLE, to County 275, then take that east to County 1225, turning south, to the cemetery entrance. Two questions: Are those directions about right to get there? And, what's the status of the cemetery? I don't know what to expect, are the stones still standing, were they 'read', is there a map of the burials; is there any info I need before I visit?

    3. If you have the 1978 Cemetery book (page 31), you know John and Mary Hoffman, and John and Elizabeth Becker donated the land for the Old St. Anne Cemetery and the church built in 1852. Although John and Mary are not listed, it does not mean they were not buried there. For many years the Cemetery was left go to ruins and many of the tombstones were thrown over the nearby riverbank. Around 1960, the cemetery was 'reclaimed' and has been kept mowed at least since. On a side note, I noticed there was a Joseph Rathaermel listed on page 37 of the cemetery book. I wonder if he was related to Mary Rothermel? I am interested in the history of John and Mary Hoffman, as we published three volumes of the Monterey History and continue to document the early pioneers. We were unaware of what happened to John and Mary Hoffman after they left Monterey. Lots of info regarding the Vurpillats as they were connected to the Kellers - same for the Beckers. Would like to learn more about John and Mary Hoffman.
