    3. Reed Cemetery is also know as the Gross Cemetery. It is located 1 mile east of the town of Winamac. I have the cemetary book which I copies when I was doing research there. I found a Susan Read, Daughter of J.E. C age 6 months and an Emma Read 36 hours old. also a cora redman wife of Frank Atha. If these are the family you are looking for I have the rest of the inscriptions on their stones if you want. I saw the obits you posted for James Allen Downard and his sons James A and William Earl. Many thanks for posting these! (www.clintoncountyindiana.org...) I wanted to touch bases with you, since I am researching Wiliam Earl Downard and trying to locate information on the train accident responsible for his death, and for his children who survived him: James, Martha, and Virginia Ruth Downard. This train accident orphaned them, as their mother had already died before him, and we do not know what happened to them. It looks like they may have been taken in by their grandparents, William's father James and his wife, but James ended up dying three years later in 1933. After that, I have lost them. It is even possible they may still be living today. Their mother, William Downard's wife, was Maude (Custer) Downard who was the daughter of George and Carrie Custer, granddaughter of William and Mary Jane (Stuart) Custer, and it is the Stuart descendancy (Mary Jane's father) I am tracing. I have a very nice photo of Mary Jane Custer I am willing to share with anyone in their line who would like to have a copy. I also have a photo of her son George Custer I am willing to share (not as well preserved) who was grandfather to the Downard children. Both of these photos are already posted on my tree and are searchable. We also have a Stuart research group online if anyone is interested in participating. My August Ludwig Grulke (he added h in America) was born 16 Jul 1817 in Debenke, Prussia. He was the son of Michael born 19 Nov 1774 in Debenke and Anna Vergin, b 10 Nov 1778 in Radczicz. THAT Michael had a brother, Daniel b 4 Nov 1777 b 4 Nov 1777 in Debenske. Daniel had a son b 22 Dec 1810. A daughter, Rosine, came to America. She was born 14 May 1816 also in Debenske. She married a Kolander. I have always felt that other members of my Gruhlke relatives migrated to America. When August came about 1852 there were at least 60 people in the party. Some of them were Roeslers, who were the relatives of August's second wife. That about does it for this time! Nancy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Look at the message boards...and rootsweb...and the various ways of spelling that surname, including with a "y" at the end, and "ey" ending, no "h", etc. Also, you will find that there were no less than three August Grulkes living in the Posen area at the same time. Anyhow, I am writing my family history, and don't believe in leaving any stones unturned. My Prussia link is with August Ludwig who put the "h" in Gruhlke when he married the second time. His first wife was Henrietta Schulz, second marriage to Wilhelmine Roesler. Henrietta died at childbirth in Posen district and is the mother of my great-grandmother, Adeline Gruhlke Middaugh. My Gruhlke ancestors probably were in Indiana for a short time before becoming landowners in Marquette County, Wisconsin. From there they moved to Minnesota. Good luck, and it would be nice if there were a connection. Nancy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Parents born in IN. Did not locate a marriage record for Ina and William, but based on his stated age at the time he was first married (33)it happened about 1918. It could be they crossed the border into Illinois, which doesn't post marriages after 1900 or possibly even Michigan. In the WWI draft registration,Lake Co., IN. a William Bernard Cantwell listed his mother Margaret Cantwell as his nearest relative, dated Sept 12, 1918. If this is the same William Cantwell, this may indicate the marriage to Ina took place after Sept 12, 1918. In the WWII draft registration William Bernard Cantwell (still in Lake Co., IN)listed a Mrs. James O'Bryan from Delaware, OH as the "person who will always know where he lives" In regards to Julia, based on her age, I think she is probably the daughter of Ina & Charles P. Wert. Not sure why she was listed as the adopted daughter of Frank Reder in 1920, unless the census taker misunderstood and she should have been listed as the adopted daughter of William Cantwell. I hope this info helps.....................Karen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
