Friends and family, We just returned from a trip to Posey Co, IN. I want to say how wonderful, helpful and friendly all the folks in Mount Vernon are! Linda Young dug gobs of records out of the courthouse basement in an effort to help me find my Phillips, Stallings and Levitt ancestors. She, along with Don Pierce, David Angermeir (County Clerk) and Connie Conrad stayed with us until 7 pm on 2 nights helping us find records even tho the court house closed at 4 PM. We found lots of clues and I am frantically putting it all together now. I whooped and hollered at every new piece of paper as I recognized old family members. Martha Breeze and all the gals at the Recorders Office across the street were so helpful as we pored over the land records requesting a copy of this and a copy of that and asking lots of questions. Martha made us feel at home and efficiently helped with everything with an air of professionalism and warm empathy. I am so grateful to the Mount Vernon folks! One more thing. Mount Vernon has the best home cooked food in the world! We had a great lunch at Sherry's at 120 Mulberry Place - wonderful homemade beef vegetable soup. Another day (darned if I can remember the name of the place, Geddhy?, but it is just a block or so from the court house. ) we had the best chicken fried steak and rhubarb pie I have ever had in my life! Out west on 4th street we had wonderful donuts and a great chicken salad sandwich at the bakery. They are the most helpful people and the best cooks in the USA! Keep the chain restaurants out of there! We toured the quaintly preserved town of New Harmony and drove every street in Posey Co. Because of all the help I have received from this list, I was able to drive straight to each piece of land my ancestors owned and video it along with tombstones at their gravesites. Thanks to all of you who make this search a wonderful experience. Love, Wanda Pitt Cedar Hill, TX descendant of Wright Stallings through his dtr Permelia Stallings married to John P. Phillips
