    3. Do you have dates for any of these folks? I show John W Robb b. 23 Oct 1816 d. 11 Apr 1894 m. 20 Jul 1844 Mary W Montgomery. The 1886 History of Posey County by Goodspeed list 11 children for them, but no Matthew. John has a brother Mathew b. 15 July 1801 m. 29 Jul 1822 Mary McClure. They are sons of Thomas Robb Sr. and Lydia Ann Waller. John and his wife a buried in Posey co but I do not find Mathew so he may have left the area. Montgomery Twp is the Gibson Co area nearest Stewartsville. This William H Power was a cousin to William H Power b 1845 (son of Stephen Power and Lavina Stephens, she the daughter of Vincent Stephens and Levina Sewell) of Fayette Co KY. William H Power's daughter Mahala Jane married Jeremiah Adams and daughter Stacy married his brother Reuben Adams in Sullivan Co IN in the 1880s. Their father was William B Adams b 1826 Indiana who served in the Mexican War as a volunteer from Vigo Co. I faintly recall that Charles Soward, the father of Sarah was a minister. I have almost no data on the Adams line at all -- they have proved exceptionally difficult to trace.

I have the information from the family history to which you refer, as well as information from Vol I of Posey Co documented history and the census. I have a Mary Elkins who married Joseph Wells (of my line) in 1837 Posey Co IN. In that same year he purchases property in Smith Township on the Vanderburgh Co line. By 1840 census both Joseph and his wife were born 1800-1810. Joseph is listed on tax lists through 1848 and then disappears. I do pick up a Joseph and Mary Wells in Vanderburgh Co in 1850 and naming pattern and age of children appear right, but their ages do not. There are several Mary Elkins in Posey Co and I was hoping to find someone who had information on Joshua's children and their children. By the way, I have a later Wells who marries a man named Gambel in White Co. The Turman book says that the original name may have been Gambel and some in the family reverted to that spelling. Do you have any information about this?

I have only been able to trace three brothers (Josiah b 1825, William b 1826, and Jeremiah b 1832, all in Indiana). They appear to have settled in Vigo Co around 1840 and I have some thought that they may be related to the Adams family into which Elder Joseph Wasson married (his first wife was named Jane Adams). By later census, their parents were born in Virginia. By history, I know that a group of early Indiana settlers set out from the so-called eastern strip (OH-KY-IN) border for Vigo Co approximately 1830 and my Adams family may be in that group, but I haven't done the research yet. As to whether they were related to an Adams family if Gibson Co, I wouldn't at all discount the possibility ... it appears that many of the early families settled all over the place ... but I just don't know.

What a wealth of grand information on the Jones family! In fact, I personally am not descended from the Jones line. Two of Peter's daughters married into my Wells family, however. Diana Jones b 7 Nov 1846 m Lycurgus M Wells b 4 Sept 1839 Date of marriage 12 Dec 1860. They had nine children. Lycurgus's will was proved in 1881. Descendants of this branch can still be found in White Co, IL. Thereafter Diana did not remarry but appears on the census as housekeeper to various Posey Co families through the time of her death in 1929 at Stewartsville. Mary Ellen Jones b 20 Dec 1836 married William Thomas Wells b ca 1837 also in Posey Co. He died ca 1769. Mary Ellen remarried to William M Ward and removed to White Co. I have not traced her Wells descendants beyond about 1900 as yet. Lycurgus and William Thomas Wells are among the five proven children of James Wells and Elizabeth Roberts, she b ca 1809 Muhlenberg Co KY, he born 1798 or 1799 in VA (probably Washington Co), she the daughter of John and Nancy Cox Roberts, he the won of David and Mary Wells, who migrated to Gibson/Posey Co before 1807. By early census records James and Elizabeth had at least two other children, but no information has yet been found to even substantiate their names. As to the Heck family -- I am interested in them as well. Ennis Wells, son of Richard Wells of Posey Co marries into the Heck family (Richard Wells b ca 1833 m Elizabeth Stephens about 1853) in Posey Co. As "my" general Wells family was the only Wells family in Gibson/Posey Co through at least 1840, this Richard ought to be of my family, but I have been unable thus far to trace his origins with any confidence. As to Peter Jones being Rev Peter Jones -- this information came from a distant cousin (himself a minister) who had done some research many years ago. I confess I have been unable to find a reference in the records, although I do note that Peter Jones was a JP, grand jury member, and more or less acted as an undertaker. I will e-mail you separately about your book. Thank you so much for your information about the Jones family. Margaret Wells
