    3. Hmmm... kinda makes sense why everyone was jumping to buy lots in the town of Springfield in 1817. Caborn is in the SE part of the county while Springfield is in the center of the county. (although the northern boundry with Gibson Co did not get finalized until 1823) Things kinda dwindled away in Springfield when the county seat was moved to Mt Vernon in 1825. (this is abt the time a few of my folks who bought some lots in Springfield started selling out and going to Clay Co, IL). Thanks for the help! Wanda -----Original Message----- From: EAllynM@aol.com [mailto:EAllynM@aol.com] Sent: Friday, May 31, 2002 5:54 PM To: INPOSEY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [INPOSEY] Blackford On one page of Goodspeed's History of Posey County, 1886 it states that Blackford was in section 29 of Marrs Twp. and was named after Judge Isaac Blackford. It was laid out in 1815. After Springfield became the County Seat in 1817, Blackford dwindled away and by 1886 the site was under cultivation. The catch is that there are TWO section 29's in Marrs Twp. One is near Caborn, the other is on the banks of the Ohio. On page 331 of Goodspeed's History it states that the first seat of justice was to be on 320 acres of land in the NEQ S30 T6S R12W and SEQ S19 T6S R12W. It also states that this location is less than a mile north of Caborn Station. So I would guess that Blackford was close to the place where sections 19, 20, 30 and 29 meet in T6S R12W, which would be about a mile north of Caborn. 3. Does anyone know where Blackford was? On Plaque out side of courthouse in Mt Vernon, Posey Co, IN POSEY COUNTY HISTORY The first recorded white man to come to Posey County was Tom Jones in 1794. Posey County was named in honor of Thomas Posey, Governor of the Indiana Territory at the time. It was created on Sept 7, 1814. After several changes the present boundry lines were fixed in 1823. The first horse-powered miss was built in 1810 by James Black. The first county seat was Blackford in Jan 1815, and the first court was held in Blackford in Oct. 1816. The county seat was moved to Mt. Vernon in 1825. The seal of Posey County, adopted in 1835, was in honor of William Henry Harrison.... New Harmony was the site of two experiments in communal living, first under Father Rapp, the Harmony Society from 1814 to 1824, and then under Robert Owen from 1825 to 1860.

    3. Friends and family, We just returned from a trip to Posey Co, IN. I want to say how wonderful, helpful and friendly all the folks in Mount Vernon are! Linda Young dug gobs of records out of the courthouse basement in an effort to help me find my Phillips, Stallings and Levitt ancestors. She, along with Don Pierce, David Angermeir (County Clerk) and Connie Conrad stayed with us until 7 pm on 2 nights helping us find records even tho the court house closed at 4 PM. We found lots of clues and I am frantically putting it all together now. I whooped and hollered at every new piece of paper as I recognized old family members. Martha Breeze and all the gals at the Recorders Office across the street were so helpful as we pored over the land records requesting a copy of this and a copy of that and asking lots of questions. Martha made us feel at home and efficiently helped with everything with an air of professionalism and warm empathy. I am so grateful to the Mount Vernon folks! One more thing. Mount Vernon has the best home cooked food in the world! We had a great lunch at Sherry's at 120 Mulberry Place - wonderful homemade beef vegetable soup. Another day (darned if I can remember the name of the place, Geddhy?, but it is just a block or so from the court house. ) we had the best chicken fried steak and rhubarb pie I have ever had in my life! Out west on 4th street we had wonderful donuts and a great chicken salad sandwich at the bakery. They are the most helpful people and the best cooks in the USA! Keep the chain restaurants out of there! We toured the quaintly preserved town of New Harmony and drove every street in Posey Co. Because of all the help I have received from this list, I was able to drive straight to each piece of land my ancestors owned and video it along with tombstones at their gravesites. Thanks to all of you who make this search a wonderful experience. Love, Wanda Pitt Cedar Hill, TX descendant of Wright Stallings through his dtr Permelia Stallings married to John P. Phillips

William died 11/10/1842 age 49. Jane died 11/2/1856 age 61 yrs 10 mo. Dau Francis and son Nathaniel are buried next to them. In the McConnel book, Rogers Cem in Harmony Twp is listed as section 15 T5S R13W which is near where Shakerag Rd intersects Williams Rd. This is the eastern area of Harmony Twp that is bordered on the north by Robb Twp and on the east by Center Twp. This cem only lists one Rogers - Alexander M. Rogers died 10/12/1846 at 54y, 11m, 19d He was the son of Thomas Rogers and Jane Chambers and the husband of Aurora Stallings Rogers, dtr of Wright Stallings. Thomas and Jane Chambers Rogers are not listed. I finally found Rogers Cem in the Cox book (not listed in the Index) on page 92. It is on the Jesse Kincheloe farm. (same names as Rogers Cem in the McConnell book) No Thomas and Jane Rogers listed. William Henry Rogers, brother of Alexander Rogers, married Jane McFadden in Christian Co, KY. I don't have the date of marriage.
