    2. David Johnson
    3. I was wondering if anyone has access to the 1860 or 1870 Census for Posey County, Indiana? If anyone does, I would appreciate it if you could look-up a couple of people for me. In the 1870 census I am interested in John and Mary HOLT. They should have at least one child, Ellen Jane, living with them. I would also be interested to see if John HOLT or Mary ROHM are listed in the 1860 census. Thank you in advance for you time and effort. Thanks again, Dave Johnson

    3. The Posey Co Recorder's Office informed me twice they are not required by law nor have staffing to look for land transactions in their index for 1811-1833 by my John Phillips. I need to hire a qualified genealogist to find and copy at least two land transactions. (I have a copy of the others since they were with the Cox papers in the archives at the library in Evansville.) Can anyone refer me to a research expert who could do some footwork for me in Posey, Gibson and Knox county? Thanks, Wanda Pitt

    1. [INPOSEY] Migration Project
    2. Warrick and Posey researchers, The Migration Project was put together by Patrick Hays. There are still a lot of states and counties waiting to be adopted so take a look and think about it. Right now the information there is a bit thin but it's only been online a few days out of beta. As more researchers like ourselve enter our ancestors migration paths we will be able to do searches on them. One possibility is that we could find someone who came the same way at the same time. This could offer clues on neighbors and relatives we haven't been able to find yet. All kinds of possibilities here so start submitting those data. Gilbert ps. Sorry about the Posey mixup. Both pages are the same but going to different county entries. You will find links to the Migration Project in both pages and also in the main Migration Page. For those interested I also have the Spencer Migration page since it's right next door and a lot of people from Warrick came through Spencer.

    3. Many thanks to all who sent me posts. I got the city of his birth from a page in the family bible. These are usually reliable sources, guess not this time. Everything else lists only Posey Co, never a city of birth. Perhaps they lived outside of any city and just used the county designation. To add to my confusion was a post to this list on 2/8/00 from "vlovell" that listed all of the cemeteries in Posey Co. Among these were 2 or 3 that were listed as Evansville South. Then I found a ggggmother buried in Mt. Vernon, in the Bufkin Cemetery. This was not listed in the post, nor was I able to find it from the web site that vlovell used. All of this is typical of my experiences with my husband's ancestors. Never easy to pin down, even when they are deceased. Thanks again to all, Vicky Cannon

    3. Posey co was formed in 1814 with an effective date of Nov 1, 1814. This would have included the area that is now Evansville. Vanderburgh Co, including Evansville, was split from Posey effective until Feb 1, 1818. Maybe news was a little slow back then. Joe Weiss in Indianapolis bvcannon wrote: > > I have just started researching my husband's Chamberlain/Russell line. Both families come from Posey Co. and the couple were married there in 1820. 3. Wanda, I haven't done any land research in Indiana, but I think your problem is that you asked for the wrong information. Write again and ask them to check their deed index/cross-index for John Philips beginning about 1816. The indexes will give a book and page number for any recorded transactions and you can order copies. What you asked for is a title search which is much more complicated and is the specialty of a title attorney and/or abstract/title company. Ordering a copy of all land transactions that John Philips was a party to will be much less expensive. Hope this helps. 1. Re: [INPOSEY] Re: Recorders Office
    2. I imagine that they are thinking that someone wants a certified title search. Most courthouses nationwide will not spend the time to do the research locate ownership that far back in time. They will, however, open the records to the researcher to do the work. I have found the courthouse personnel at Posey Co. to be most helpful everytime that I have researched there. They just don't have the people to do historical research, and I doubt that the taxpayers would pay for it either. Just some ramblings for you. Glenn
