    2. Gene Keusch
    3. Hi everyone, My g grandfather, Jacob Zuber, was one of those French/Germans who settled in the northern part of Vanderburg County about 1856. He was born in Lorraine (Alsace Lorraine), according to legend, came as a stowaway, married in PA and came to the midwest. If the Germans came to Phildelphia, they would travel to Pittsburgh and go down the Ohio. There were several stops where they liked to settle--Cincinnati, Louisville, KY, Dubois County, IN, and the west side of Evansville. If they came to Dubois Co., they stopped at Troy, IN, and walked the Kundek Trail from Troy, going through Fulda, Ferdinand, and Jasper. (I live in Dubois County). And yes, these Germans were related. Often whole families would immigrate together. There was officially no united Germany until the latter 1800's. You were from Hanover, Bavaria, etc. That part of Europe was hit hard with wars, famines, and when people left their communities, there were often very few left in the community. The French and English who had settled Indiana first often would leave when these "foreigners" came. And the land was plentiful with woods which these Germans were familiar with. Many of the Germans were skilled as wood workers. Years ago, in Dubois County, when churchches would have summer picnics, busloads of people from Louisville would come and visit relatives for the day. In 1840, Father Josef Kundek came to this county, bought up quite a bit of land specifically for a German settlement. And advertisements were sent back to the German areas telling how great the land was. And the town of Ferdinand was named for one of the emperors living during Kundek's time. No doubt, the emperor contributed money to the cause. So the Germans came in droves looking for a better life. Hope this helps shed some light. 3. I always 'heard' the Germans moved into the OHIO Valley because it reminded them of 'home'. The Ohio Valley and the 'Beautiful Blue Ohio' river especially between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati looked similar to the river valleys in Germany. It was just natural to move on down the river. It was developed by the Family History Dept. of the Church of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Basically, what this means is, that you have to have a genealogy program loaded into your computer to send or receive a gedcom file. This enables you to format all or part of your data files to be sent to any other computer that has a program that can read your file. 1. [INPOSEY] GEDCOM
    2. I really seem to've stuck a nerve when I asked if some "kind soul" could help me with GEDCOM. Well, there's an awful lot of 'kind souls' out there and I thank each and every one for their time and concern. There were also a few "ignorant souls," such as myself, who were curious to know more about GEDCOM, too. I'm sending this along for anyone who wants it. Here are some URLs for sites to visit: <http://www.gendex.com/gedcom55/55> <http://www.gedx/default.html> <http://www.genealogy.com/201/lesson9/course9_02.html> <http://www.tiac.net/users/pmcbride/gedcom/55gctoc.htm> <http://www.genroots. org> try Bartholomew Co., IN <http://www.familysearch.org> And these kind words from Cary: "You've gotten some great information from others, but I think you need to remember that GEDCOMs "happen" and that like when you use your washimachine you need to know the basic instructions (how much soap, etc.), you don't need to really know how the machine is configured (electrical systems and all that). A long way of saying , relax and enjoy using your software and don't et overwhelmed." I'm not the best typist in the world, in Florida, or even in my own house, so I hope I haven't made any mistakes where they would count in all the above. Hope this helps some of you and serves as a reference. I love this genealogy! Cookie, in Florida
