Can someone please give me the address of the Posey County Clerk? I am trying to find out how I can get a copy of the marriage license of Oscar Huffstutler and Bertha Ellen Finn, married 09/10/1899 in Posey Co., IN. Bertha is the daughter of my ggrandfather. Thank you. Jannie Bryant Hondo, Texas
The Harmonists left Harmony, Butler Co., PA is 1814 and followed their partriarch, Father Rapp, to New Harmony, IN. In 1824 they gave it up and, what was left of them, returned to Harmony, PA. They practiced celibacy and the men and women lived separately in dormitories. So it is unlikely that your ancestor is descended from them. My ancestors bought land from the departing Rappites in 1824. Many of their buildings, including their dormitories, are still standing in New Harmony. I want to thank everyone who answered my post. I believe "Hoop Pole" township is where my ancestor meant, and over the years it got changed to Hoophole. The information I received from everyone was very informative and helpful. Thanks again! Melanie Herring
Just lil ol me again. STILL looking for info on HARMON, JACOB, CHRISTOPHER RISTER. Got lots of stuff on Chris, some on Jacob & Harmon (my line) LOOKING for info PRE 1827. thanks, steve
Hello fellow listers! Does anyone know of Hoophole township? My ancestors were from Hoophole township, but different sources say they are from Posey and others say Gibson county. Does anyone know exactly what county Hoophole township was in? Melanie Herring Researching Garten, Garton, Jones, Knowles
Hi, Cynthiana is about 1 mi (as the crow flies) west of the Gibson line. Poseyville is about 4 miles west of Cynthiana. Mt. Vernon (on the Ohio) is the seat of Posey Co and Poseyville and Cynthiana are about 30 min or more from Mt. Vernon (I am guessing without looking at a map). To my knowledge, there is really no good way to get to Mt. Vernon (even today)--must go west to New Harmony then south to Mt. Vernon, or go to Evansville and then west to Mt. Vernon.
