Basically the story is that in the 1830's some men from Ohio River flatboats came ashore and got into a brawl with some of the local men, who later successfully beat off the rivermen with hoop poles (used in making barrels). The year book of Mt. Vernon High School is called the Hoop Pole.

Miller, Sr. Looking for info on John Hohstadt & Phillip Keitel. They moved to Mt Vernon, Posey Co, IN from Elliot Co, KY in 1880's. John had son named Louis F. Hohenstadt born 1900 in Mt Vernon, IN. He had a daughter born 1929 in Mt Vernon. Louis was still in Mt Vernon, IN on R #3 with his family in 1939 as I have letter written by him to confirm this. Phillip Keitel (1852-1935) married a sister of John Hohstadt & had the following children: William, Leua, Jake, Fred, Ricka, Barbra, Sophia. Jake moved to Texas about 1909. Fred & William lived on farms east of Mt Vernon, IN on R #1. Ricka married Fred Kleinschmidt & lived east of Mt Vernon, IN on R #1. Barbra married William Leuder & lived west of Mt Vernon, IN on R #4. Sophia married Chas Newman, was widowed & lived in Evansville, IN. John Hohstadt's brother Fred Hohstadt is my great-gandfather. Fred changed his name to Rice & stayed in KY with his sister, Rachel (Ricki) Hohstadt. They both married and raised families in northeast KY. My founding Kron in the US is Joseph Peter Kron. He came to the US in May 1868, and sailed into NY; he was 20 years old at the time. He them migrated to Armstrong Co., PA, got married a woman by the name of Katherine who was from Prussia, had four children and then moved West (some say to Denver first in search of silver). The 1880 Kansas US Census shows him in Herzog Twp, KS as a railroad hand. He died in Kansas of a heart attack. The census also shows his birth place as being from Hesse-Darmstadt. I have not been able to find any confirming evidence of his German origins but am still looking. I also, don't beleive he was ever in Posey Twp., but you never know. Don't know if there is any connection but I thought I'd pass this info along just in case someday there is a match. Good luck in your searching. Charlie Kron

NC, d. 1891 Posey Co. IN) m. 1840 Posey Co. IN to Jane Rogers (b. 1817 IN, d. 1868 Posey Co. IN). Jane Rogers was daughter of Auroria Stallings and Alexander Rogers. Auroria was one of 10 children (others included Benjamin, Elizabeth, James, John, Melia, Willis - b. NC, Moses, Henry and Sabrina) of Mary Hunter who 1st m. Wright Stallings and 2nd m. Eddy Roberts. This at least says that Stallings family was in NC in late 1700s to early 1800s and that their descendants came to Posey Co. It may be a place for you to start....good luck.
