Snyder, worked together in Posey County, Indiana in 1899 and were friends for several years. I have a court affidavit in Rufus' name, as he testified in the Civil War pension application of Kimber and about Kimber's failing health. Rufus signed the name to the document. Would you like a copy of it? If so, send me your snail mail address. Also, I am writing a book on Kimber, so I will have something in it about Rufus, when I get it done. In the1900 Federal Census of Posey County, Rufus M. Stinnett was born in December 1843 and had been married for 31 years to Charlotte. He was born in Kentucky and she in Indiana in October 1845. They had five children, but only three were living in 1900. They lived at 703 Mill Street in Mt. Vernon, Indiana. Also living with them were Clara, born in April 1878, Louis B. born in October 1881 and widowed daughter, Florence Zimmerman, born in November 1871. All three were born in Indiana. You may have all of this information, but maybe not. I may have a few more things about Rufus. Let me know if you want anything more, and of course, the court document. Mitch Lutzke
Early land records were not very consistent at listing the spouse, so with a common name it may be hard to determine which John McDaniel is involved. I note early Posey Co marriages list 4 John McDaniel marriage between 1824 and 1833. Some land records do list buyers home states and or where sellers have moved. Some also list long line of ancestors if land has been passed through several family members with out public transfers being recorded. While Black Twp and Gibson Co are fairly distant, with extended family they could have been working 2 farms or could have bought them for speculation. If these were original entries from Federal Government, the records are with Bureau of Land Management and records were on line but have been taken off line due to a law suit. Subsequent resale and purchase records are at county locations (Princeton and Mt Vernon). Most of these have also been microfilm and are available at libraries and from LDS. I do find a John McDaniels listed as original entries in T6, R14, S33 which is NW of Mt Vernon and about 2 miles from Wabash River. Many folks in this area later migrated to IL when land opened there. Hope this helps Joe Weiss Joyce Hennessy wrote: > > Hi, > > I am new to these 2 lists. A page has been started on places of interest in and around Posey County. The new link is up and working so you can take a look. If there is any place you can think of that could be added let me know. Try to keep the destination within 100 miles of Posey County so not to be an overnight trip. That is the reason I have not yet included St. Louis, Indianapolis and Nashville, Tn. Although I know that those three and others could be done in a day trip it's a rough day trip. Gilbert

As to the connection of McFadden and Bell families ---- here's hoping I get all this written down correctly..... John Bradley (son of Cornelius Bradley and Mary Hogan) married Hannah McFadden....John Bradley was brother to David R.E.A.D. Bradley whose daughter Lucretia married John Hancock...John Hancock's daughter Hannah married William Breeze....William Breeze's daughter Molly married Warren Spencer Bell who is great-great-grandfather (direct line Bell ancestor) to my daughter. Note that Mary Hogan who married Cornelius Bradley was from Ireland and she was born about 1755 and died before 1806. Do not have any proof of connection with Raleigh Hogan who married Peggy Conway and their daughter Vollie Hogan (b. ~1750, d. 1840) who was the widow of Aaron Burlison when she married Andrew J. McFadin Sr. (b. Apr 1750, d. Feb 1816) and also Raleigh's daughter(?) Rebecca Hogan. All of this is what has made researching the family history so much fun!! Just never know who you'll find connected to who....so, I have kept track of most every individual related somehow to the Bell family through Posey County and then going back more generations to the colonies -- mostly through KY and TN to NC, VA and other places. Hope this is clear enough and answers your question, even though I realize it raises some others.... ej

Like his brothers, Andrew took some part in the Revolutionary War but the exact dates, places, and unit of Andrew's service are not known. He is listed, however, in the Department of Archives and History, Raleigh, North Carolina, Revolutionary War Army Accounts, Vol. XI, p. 18, Folio 1, as having been paid "for services." As early as 1782, Andrew had initially settled on the Cumberland River of Tennessee. Beginning about 1783, he took a series of trading trips to New Orleans. By 1784, he was with his brothers James, John, and possibly William on Sulpher Creek. He also had land on Silver Creek, a branch of the Red River in Logan County in what is now Kentucky. In 1785, Andrew established McFadin's Station on the Big Barren River in Warren County, Kentucky, about four miles above the present city of Bowling Green. There, he also operated a ferry across the river. Families of several of the McFadin brothers appear to have lived at McFadin's Station. Governor James Garrard called out the Kentucky Militia in 1798 to address Indian troubles. On 8 February he appointed Andrew McFadin a Major in the 25th Warren County Regiment. These units were known as the Cornstalk Militia. Later, he was in the battle of Tippecanoe in 1811 along with his son, "Slim Andy," and War of 1812. His first marriage to Mary Hogan was before 1793 and she died 1798, probably in Tennessee where they had gone for the birth of their third child. He then married Volly Hogan Burleson, a widow of Aaron Burleson III. Sometime in the late 1790's, Andrew and his older brother, William, on a hunting trip across the Ohio River into Indian country, found a high bluff on the north bank where they planned to move their families as soon as it was safe to do so. In 1803 the United States opened up this Northwest Territory to settlement. During the winter of 1805 and 1806, William and Andrew lived on the bluff and built stone cabins for their families who were still in Kentucky. Late in the spring of 1806 the families came in wagons bringing their belongings and livestock. The Ohio River was low and the boats crossed at Diamond Island. General William Henry Harrison and some officers camped on the north shore surprised the McFadins by welcoming them ashore. General Harrison, as he helped Mary, William's daughter ashore, told her she was the first white woman to land in that part of Indiana. In subsequent year near McFadin's Bluff the Indian danger grew, yet the community progressed. Late one night in the spring of 1811 at McFadin's Bluff, settlers were awakened by a throbbing noise on the river. Sparks and flames were belching from a smokestack. It was going at an incredible rate of speed. Some settlers fled, braver ones watched. It was a steamboat, the New Orleans, built at Pittsburgh, and the first one to navigate the entire stretch of river to New Orleans. Andrew owned a boat wharf and a store for supplying boats on the Ohio River. McFadin's Bluff later became the city of Mount Vernon, Indiana. Andrew McFadin, Sr. is buried in the center of Mount Vernon. Volley, who lived to be more than ninety years of age, is believed to be buried at Franklin near one of her sons.
