Good morning, Ernie Lasley wrote: I heard yesterday that two cemeteries were dozed out recently in Southwestern Pike county where they are building a railroad spur to a coal mine near Union IN. This is not in Southwest Pike, but is the only one I have heard about. Surely, they are not coming from the South up the Oatsville Road because of the bottoms. It must be thru Washington and Clay Township to the Junction. Is this the one you are talking about? There are a few cemeteries that could be in its path. My question is, aren't these types of project subject to environmental reviews, ie. Indiana Environmental laws and the National Environmental Protection Act? Don't your county planning departments review applications for work such as constructing a new railroad spur or other such projects? Aren't these cemeteries being identified as historic or cultural resources? We are on the planning department's list for all project applications filed and put out for what they call "initial consultation." When we know of a cemetery or burial ground that is anywhere near that project, we send a letter of comment and response. We are, in essence, making the "record" in case something goes awry later, and we can say, "we told you it was there...." Just curious as to whether things work that differently in other states.
