Todays Indianapolis Star has a front page story on changes our mayor, Bart Peterson, is proposing for UNI-GOV. www.indystar.com Basically this would eliminate township government in Marion Co. While the city & county were consolidated in 1970, the townships still were separate & took care of fire departments - poor relief- CEMETERIES - dog license - property assessment- small claims courts -& schools. The related article about townships in todays Star states that cemeteries would be handled by a city department. The reason I even bring this up, is that a Legislative Study Committee has been looking at eliminating township government statewide. Several people on the INPCRP list commended on the move to do this during the last session of the Legislature. If this happens in Marion Co., I think there would be a stronger move towards this statewide. The question is what happens to cemeteries. In some cases where Twsp. Trustees are not doing their job, it could be a good thing. In other cases, it would take the cemeteries away from Trustees who are caring for them. It might make the Legislature look at requiring County Cemetery Commissions, if we force that issue. We are going to have to keep a close eye on this and the affect it will have on the cemetery legislation we are asking for. The only other thing I can say, is THANK YOU to Trustee Gwen Horth for having our WashingtonTownship, Marion Co. cemeteries restored before any changes take place.
