The production and manufacturing of whetstone gravestones during the first half of the 19th century constituted one of the state's earliest industries and the use of whetstone marked a vast improvement over fieldstone and wood markers. Whetstone gravestones were quarried from Orange County between the 1820s and the 1860s. Eric Kvale is a research geologist with the Indiana Geological Survey and an associate professor with the Indiana University Department of Geological Sciences. Richard Powell is a research affiliate with IGS, where his specialties include caves, coal, environmental geology, aerial photo interpretation and early land surveys. "Traces on the Road" is a quarterly lecture series in which authors present their stories from the pages of the Society's popular history magazine, _Traces of Indiana and Midwestern History_. Kvale and Powell's article "A Monumental Business: The Story of Hindostan Whetstone Gravestones," appeared in the winter 2002 issue of _Traces_. Programs in the lecture series are scheduled around the state with changing authors. _Traces_ managing editor Ray Boomhower serves as moderator for the programs.
