They come, they burn, they leave. The stone have a gray smoky look. Someone rubbed the names and dates so they could be read. In the process of trying to reach an agreement, I asked to be notified, and allowed to observe the burning. I am going to take close up photos of the front and back of each stone before and during and after the burning. Nothing has ever been recorded as an observation, other than "They look OK" That's not very scientific. No one in the country, NO ONE, has did a detailed study of the effects of fire on the stones. No one. I think it's about time that it be done. I plan on using 4 rolls of Film on the Cemetery the 1st of April. I will note the date, the weather, the Temperature, the moisture content, the Humidity, the height of the grass. I will have the present discoloration of each stone at this time, after the cemetery being cleaned. I will take pictures before and during the burning on the day of the fire. Also video. I think it's about time we find out the effects of any kind of fire in the cemetery at all. As I said, no one has ever checked the results before. There are no studies of any kind. Now we will do one. I am also responsible enough to conduct an unbiased investigation. My 48 years working with stone, including fire RestorationI should qualify me more than an average person to conduct a study. I only want the best for the cemetery. If burning does no harm, I will gladly report this as a positive. Or if I see adverse effects, I will note and report that also as a Negative. Do I sound like a radical???? I am not. I'm trying to prove that. The Rep. from the Nature Preserve, a division of the DNR was contacted by the Trustee. He said he had been by and it looked fine. That's good. The Trustee also seems to think the cemetery is much improved. Now we need our new sign.!! Jack E. Briles Sr. Po Box 444 New Albany, Floyd Co. In. 47151-0444 E-mail jb502000@aol.com
Jack, would it be possible to also have someone video tape the burning as well? That could prove to be a valuable resource in itself.
