On Sept. 14 I sent a letter to Johnson Co. Prosecutor Lance Hamner to get some follow-up information on the case regarding the vandalism at Greenlawn Cemetery last June. I also wrote about the importance of saving our cemeteries and encouraged the fullest punishment allowed by law. The following is the text of the letter I received from Mr. Hamner today. ------------ Dear Mr. Manzenberger, Thank you for your letter of September 14, 2004; I agree with every point of it. Among other things, I have personally spent many hours on cemetery clean up and repair projects as a Scoutmaster for Troop 256 here in Franklin. Many of the boys' Eagle projects entailed days and days of backbreaking work to repair what time and vandalism had done to these historical treasures. The time is natural; the vandalism is a shame. I am a descendant of John Hamner, Revolutionary War veteran who is buried in Hamner Cemetery in Amity, here in Johnson County. My father has served on our cemetery's board for many years as did my grandfather before him. Additionally, we have spent many hours here and about doing genealogy work. In short, your letter could not have found a more receptive or sympathetic "ear", so to speak. First, let me update you on what you have not seen in the newspaper. After having been arrested in the cemetery vandalism case we caused Beezley's bail to be revoked. He is in jail and has been for more than a month. He'll stay there for the foreseeable future. Because the case is still pending, however, I cannot comment much more than what I have told you and assure you that we will try to get even more punishment for this defendant, eventually. Cemetery vandalism infuriates me and always gets serious attention in our office. Thank you again for writing. Sincerely, Lance D. Hamner Prosecutor, 8th Judicial Circuit Johnson County, Indiana
