    3. Lisa, Paradise is a pretty song, I have been a John Prine fan since the early 70's. I too want to say welcome back Jack! We missed you and Betty at the Madison workshop, as usual I left feeling like we did not get much done in the yard, I did however bring the tombstone of Elizabeth Rea home with me to finish. Micki and I went down yesterday and reset it.The weather was so cool during the workshop that the epoxy was taking too long to kick over, but I did not want to leave it half done,it was a nice stone. The workshop in Whiteley County is next week but I am afraid we might run into the same thing as far as demonstrating epoxy repair, but then you know there is more to do than just epoxy repairs. Maybe the cool weather will chase me inside so that I can be more conversing with the group. 2. Hello and welcome back Jack, how was your weekend? We were working at the Harvest Homecoming and the cool weather was very pleasant for a change. It is usually hot and sunny but I can remember one or two times we had snow flurries during the festival! The rain was heavy at times this year but the overall temp. was pleasant enough. Well, Jack we have lots to do so in a week or two after I have rested lets put our plan into action. I need to go now. I will be back in touch next week. My wife and me are going to a convention for a few days. We have to fly to get there. I am not scared but I am somewhat concerned about air travel these days. See you next week. Tom

    3. Re: Veterans Day Project. In Gibson county we are working on locating all of the 41 plus Revolutionary War Soldiers graves. Many of the stones are in need of repair, or are in bad condition or missing. We plan to have little flags set out on Nov. 11th for the ones we have found. We have re-leveled and repaired some, and so far have replaced 4 with new government replacement markers. Sadly, we have found 3 so far that the cemetery is completely gone. Now that the crops are being picked we can get in the fields to search for a few more that we think we know where they should be. Wish I had ask about the fair booth earlier. Some of you had wonder ideas. I am like you Ruth, it is nice to travel a different part of our great State and visit different cemeteries. They are all similar and yet there is different types of stones in each area that we can learn from. I haven't seen any of the fieldstone markers and footstones in Tippecanoe County. L. A. Cemetery Commission......Ernie L. appeared on Evansville, Channel 7 news re: the Owensville War Memorial/outhouse combination he recently referred to on the site,...seems as tho the parks board there has had a change of heart....and the DNR has currently suspended burning any graveyards, until they can KNOW what damage it may be doing to the stones.....(.this info coming from the Saturday Madison Workshop) And if you haven't attended one of John and Micki Walters' workshops,,make sure you attend the next one near you.(or use it as an excuse to travel across the state ,as we did Saturday)..temperature was nicer than the 90* we had in Princeton last June......Ruth and Jerry Pride Wheatland...

Is this different than a cemetery? > > Ernie; Your right.thinking is right. I designed and built a memorial to the people buried in a cemetery. The memorial in no way was any more of an indicator of anyone's particular Burial place than the one you are talking about. It sits in a Cleared cemetery site, but could just as well have been built at the end of the rd where you turn in a half mile away. It could just as well been built in the middle of an adjoining field. It would serve the same purpose. It was dedicated to a number of Deceased persons just as I assume your memorial was. The memorial you speak of may crumble and fall, but it will always be a dedicated memorial and should NOT be made into a back wall for a Public Outhouse. Better to have a ceremony, tear it down and build a public restroom, minus the Memorial back wall, I mean you could see through it. Our society is to quick to forget. Just save a Buck. Your right Ernie, it's still a memorial I'll back you on this, That's my opinion jb502000@aol.com (Jack Briles)

    1. [INPCRP] Great Workshop in Madison
    2. Lois Mauk
    3. Just wanted to take a minute to thank Katherine Dill, the Indiana Historical Society, the Jefferson County Genealogy Society and EVERYONE who participated in the great Workshop in Madison on Saturday, 10/6/2001. The rain stopped about midnight on Friday night and the cemetery wasn't a bit muddy. In fact, the weather was excellent, though it was a little cool for Walt's Mastico to do its trick. Got home late Saturday night, big day at church Sunday and then spent the rest of the day glued to the TV watching the coverage of the bombing in Afghanistan. So, I'm a bit tardy posting this note of appreciation. L.A. Clugh has kindly shared with me some of the photos she took on Saturday and I hope that tonight or tomorrow I'll get them put together on a web page for you all to see. I didn't hear the final head count for attendees, but the last number I heard was about 70! Most of them stayed with us for the afternoon session in the cemetery and Walt had a large and very attentive group that stayed with him for several hours "in the yard". The first speaker Saturday morning was Rep. Markt Lytle. I was pleased to present him, on your behalf, with 2,453 signatures (the absolute "final" count). I had an opportunity to speak to Rep. Lytle before the program began and explained our concerns about the ease with which pioneer cemeteries can be dismantled and relocated in this state. The 2-1/2" thick book of signatures that I gave him included an explanation of our concerns, a breakdown of the signatures by county and by state, a copy of the 5 pages of court records that resulted in Whalen Cemetery being relocated despite the fact that it was an exception on the developer's deed, a copy of the current and previous deeds and a copy of the webpage on that cemetery. If anybody has "left-over" petitions, you can send them directly to: Rep. Markt Lytle 423 W. Main St. Madison, IN 47250 Rep. Lytle seemed genuinely surprised at what we told him was happening in the state. Jeannie Regan-Dinius was with us and a couple of times he asked her, "Is that true?" She told him it was. He had a hard time believing that the developers were circumventing the 100-foot buffer zone by just pulling the cemeteries up and moving them. Since what we are asking the Legislature to do won't cost the state a PENNY to implement, there's a fair chance that Rep. Lytle can get something passed in the upcoming short session. He promised to deliver the petitions and explain our concerns to the joint House/Senate Natural Resources Study Committee, which is meeting TOMORROW at Pokagon State Park in Angola, Indiana. (How about THAT for timing? Purely accidental, I assure you!) I also suggested to Rep. Lytle that the Study Committee might enjoy having a future meeting in Connersville so they can visit John Walters to tour his facility and see some of what Fayette County has been able to accomplish in a very short time on a limited budget. Rep. Lytle said that was a real possibility. I want to thank New Albany Township Trustee Tom Cannon for coming up to Madison to speak about the Trustees' responsibilities. I wish he could have stayed for the whole program, but he had inescapable obligations back in Floyd County. Holly Jenks came down all the way from LaPorte to speak about County Cemetery Commissions. Thank you for your remarks, Holly! I trust you had a safe trip back to the north country. Thanks to Jeannie Regan-Dinius for coming down to discuss what the DNR and the DHPA are trying to accomplish with respect to the cemetery registry started earlier this year. L.A., thanks for sharing the photos and thanks for lending a hand with the stone cleaning. Thanks too for lending your brushes. Walt and Micki were, as usual, outstanding! I heard a number of people saying how much they were able to learn just by watching Walt's demonstrations and they were really impressed with what Fayette County has been able to accomplish in such a short amount of time. We saw a lot of familiar faces and got to meet some new friends, one or two of whom have already joined the INPCRP e-mail group. I hope all of you "new-timers" will take a minute to drop a note to us at INPCRP-L@rootsweb.com to introduce yourselves. All in all, we had a great turnout and a great workshop. Thanks again to all of you who participated and a special thanks to every one of you who helped collect petition signatures. Good night. Lois
