    2. MARK: THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY. HOPEFULLY WE CAN TAKE YOU UP ON YOUR OFFER. I BELIEVE THE CEMETERY NEAR MY HOUSE HAS A VETERAN BURIED THERE, I WILL HAVE TO RESEARCH AND FIND OUT WHEN. IT HAS HAD NO BURIALS FOR YEARS. I AM ALSO HAPPY TO FIND SOMEONE CLOSE WHO IS KNOWLEDGEABLE. I WOULD LOVE TO FORM A GROUP WITH THE ZEAL TO COVER THIS ON AN ANNUAL BASIS AND KEEP IT UP. BUT, AT THIS TIME, IT IS MOSTLY WANT AND NOT KNOWLEDGE. I BELONG TO THE TIPTON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND HAVE THEIR BACKING (NO MONEY) TO CONTINUE WITH THIS PROJECT. I WILL CONTACT RUSS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS THANKS, AND WILL BE IN CONTACT AS WE NEED TO BE READY TO EITHER ASSESS THE NEEDS OR GET CLEARANCE ON ONE TO START WITH. SO FAR THERE ARE TWO OF US WHO ARE INTERESTED IN CARRYING OUT THIS ENDEAVOR...YOU MAKE THREE. 3. I guess no one saw the Channel 6 News (Indy) last Wednesday? Sy Jenkins did a little piece on the Bartholomew County Auditor, Vernon Jewell, who is refusing to sign off on Section 2 of the Crossmann Communities subdivision Shadow Creek Farms until they relinquish their rights to the cemetery. The Columbus Republic is doing a Sunday Special on it and I will try to get the text for that so you can read it since full access to their website requires subscription for some stupid reason. Basically, someone of authority FINALLY listened when I kept pointing out that the developer, just like some of the private landowners around here, doesn't have title the cemetery since a quarter of an acre was excepted from their deed. They have made fairly appropriate accommodations for the 7-grave site, but their plans still won't label it with the word "CEMETERY" (they use Burial Site, which isn't that big of a deal, but I think it they should all be labeled as cemetery so know one views ! any of them as different from the rest) and they claim it as an egress/ingress easement subject to the Homeowners association and maintained by them. I think EVERY piece of ground should have a title to it in this day and age, so I would like to see the county or township claim Quiet Title to it and then subdivide (just like anyone else would have to) and allow, in a written, recorded document, Crossmann to have clear title to the remainder, with the exception written in their new deed of the specific location of the new boundaries of the cemetery and the guaranteed an irrevocable access to it from the street. I sat in on a little unplanned talk with the county attorney and I think he sees it as lets do what it takes to get this thing over with before they give us anymore grief. I can understand that, really I can, but this just isn't one cemetery to me, it is also 11 more whose ownership will is at stake just here in this county. I AM NOT GOING AFTER CROSSMANN, they did! what was right and have done wonderful things here so far, but I have never believed that they would just claim adverse possession without documentation, then claim they had it regardless of adverse possession. I asked some people about the possibility of Crossmann being able to Quiet Title the 1/4-acre vs. the County doing the same. I was told that the county would not & could not ever do that. If that is the case, I would think descendents of the last family to have clear title should be able to claim Quiet Title, regardless of where they live. I have formed a cemetery group (unofficially) here of my own at the moment, since others here think there needs to be legal things drawn up to do so and its always that they will look into it and get back to me. Trouble is that when there is an issue to stand up for and the heat is on (in this case in the form of the developer) I am the one left looking like I am some odd-eccentric old maid who has too much time on here hands. I am thinking about the Bartholomew County Citizens Safeguarding Cemeteries or the BCCSC (I prefer the term Burial Sites in my book I'm doing for the auditor, but I think there's already enough BS in the local government so I am using Cemetery instead!) What do you guys think? Cris West Bartholomew County Citizens Safeguarding Cemeteries ? Columbus, IN

    3. Mark, Do you know of any site where they are taking the pictures of CW stones around the state? You mentioned (SUV Grave Registration Officer) I naturally go to these stones any time I visit a cemetery. It seem like someone would have a webpage where they could find where there man was buried. I know, it really would be a big progect. Just asking? LA Tippecanoe County Pioneer Cemeteries Group Coordinator

    3. Cris, This sounds like a terrific fix for some of us. If we could get the planning departments to require the developers to transfer the cemetery titles to the counties and/or even private trustees, that would provide a safeguard for them, since then the government is ensuring all eyes are on them. 2. Hello Sue: Thanks for your encouraging reply. I have already talked with two township Trustees and got two different stories. Also talked with one of the cemeteries where I see a need and they have a $300.00 per year budget so can't do too much. I also have talked to an attorney. I need to talk to the County Commissioners or at least one and get their slant. This is like opening a can of worms. Every turn brings more theories and complexities. I really think there should be a organization to oversee and govern the smaller cemeteries. The larger ones don't need it. I really thought I was embarking on something simple. Wasn't I green? 3. Joan, John Walters is the best there is on the INPCRP list for holding workshops and teaching methods for cemetery restoration and marker restoration. Stay on the list and follow the messages. You learn so much about this special group of dedicated people. Learn their names, make special acquaintenances, and you'll be half way home. They'll help you in every way they can. Good luck! 3. Joan, You're working with the best group in America. I'm sure you'll find some good people will help you with advice and methodologies. These types of projects usually start with one person. You are the one! 3. Good morning, Ernie Lasley wrote: I heard yesterday that two cemeteries were dozed out recently in Southwestern Pike county where they are building a railroad spur to a coal mine near Union IN. Jon Andrews wrote: I have not been down there in a while, but it has been my understanding that the railroad spur to B&B's mine at the junction of 56 and 65 is to come from south of Hazleton and follow south along 56 thru Union. This is not in Southwest Pike, but is the only one I have heard about. Surely, they are not coming from the South up the Oatsville Road because of the bottoms. It must be thru Washington and Clay Township to the Junction. Is this the one you are talking about? There are a few cemeteries that could be in its path. My question is, aren't these types of project subject to environmental reviews, ie. Indiana Environmental laws and the National Environmental Protection Act? Don't your county planning departments review applications for work such as constructing a new railroad spur or other such projects? Aren't these cemeteries being identified as historic or cultural resources? We are on the planning department's list for all project applications filed and put out for what they call "initial consultation." When we know of a cemetery or burial ground that is anywhere near that project, we send a letter of comment and response. We are, in essence, making the "record" in case something goes awry later, and we can say, "we told you it was there...." Just curious as to whether things work that differently in other states. 2. Hello: I am interested in finding if there are any people out there who are interested in forming a party to survey and find ways to take care of the cemeteries in Tipton County, Indiana. Please contact me at joanwray@ccrtc.com. We are just looking into this from a request of a farmer who was interested in the neglected cemetery near his land. We don't really know how to do this, but have been reading your articles for the past week or two. I even heard a story locally about someone who took some of the small fallen stones home and made a sidewalk from them. Just burned me up. Let me hear from you local area people.
