The production and manufacturing of whetstone gravestones during the first half of the 19th century constituted one of the state's earliest industries and the use of whetstone marked a vast improvement over fieldstone and wood markers. Whetstone gravestones were quarried from Orange County between the 1820s and the 1860s. Eric Kvale is a research geologist with the Indiana Geological Survey and an associate professor with the Indiana University Department of Geological Sciences. Richard Powell is a research affiliate with IGS, where his specialties include caves, coal, environmental geology, aerial photo interpretation and early land surveys. "Traces on the Road" is a quarterly lecture series in which authors present their stories from the pages of the Society's popular history magazine, _Traces of Indiana and Midwestern History_. Kvale and Powell's article "A Monumental Business: The Story of Hindostan Whetstone Gravestones," appeared in the winter 2002 issue of _Traces_. Programs in the lecture series are scheduled around the state with changing authors. _Traces_ managing editor Ray Boomhower serves as moderator for the programs. Walt, How disheartening! Tullis Chapel was a beautiful cemetery. I don't understand why the commissioners would say the things they said. Frankly, you put Fayette Co. on the map! Jack, would it be possible to also have someone video tape the burning as well? That could prove to be a valuable resource in itself. No one. I think it's about time that it be done. I plan on using 4 rolls of Film on the Cemetery the 1st of April. I will note the date, the weather, the Temperature, the moisture content, the Humidity, the height of the grass. I will have the present discoloration of each stone at this time, after the cemetery being cleaned. I will take pictures before and during the burning on the day of the fire. Also video. I think it's about time we find out the effects of any kind of fire in the cemetery at all. As I said, no one has ever checked the results before. There are no studies of any kind. St. Johns Lutheran (barrens) Cemetery To the List and Wm. Spurlock@saving Graves Last night I received a Phone Call from Fred Uhl, the Morgan Twp. Harrison Co. Trustee. He is the man designated to care for this cemetery. After a meeting the 6th of March at the cemetery, With a Representative of the Nature Preserve, A Division of the DNR, and a Rep. of the Nature Conservancy., Trustee Fred Uhl, and myself, we struck a Compromise agreeable to all 4. The Cemetery will be Burned every 4-5 years at a height of 6 inches after it is mowed. It will be mowed November 1st. That allows about 7 months out of the year when the cemetery can be visited by the Elderly, the Handicapped and Small Children as should any cemetery in INDIANA Today it looked like a Cemetery should.!! First I would like to thank the Representative of the N.P. and the DNR for their willingness to cooperate, and make concessions, as I also had to make some of my own. They knew what they wanted and I knew what I wanted. We met in the middle with the Trustee, and we all came out winners I still don't approve of burning a cemetery, but on this one I will conduct my own study for damage. At 6 inches I believe it will be very minimal if at all. Good things can happen when everyone works together toward a logical conclusion. I also wish to Thank Trustee Fred Uhl, He was sort of in the middle, but did a very fine clean up a fine job. I have photos taken the day Bill Spurlock got the E-mail about the condition. I took them about an hour after I read about it. This afternoon I took 24 more Photos. They are different. When I first went over the hill and saw it, My wife and I both thought we turned on the wrong road. I honestly believe I had tears in my eyes. I went across the road to the State Troopers house and asked how it looked. He said first, I hope you had permission. I answered everything he asked, and then he said it REALLY LOOKS GREAT. Now people can get in and visit. Now as soon as they get the standard White and Black sign I was promised, even mentioning St. Johns Cemetery as well as the Barrens, and get rid of the Monstrosity directly in front, I'll be happy. Well, I've talked to much, I will get the before, and after Photos on Line tomorrow, for those interested. as far as what has been accomplished, this is what I told my children," If you need help and only yell once, no one will listen, but keep it up and sooner or later someone will listen and help you". Walt, Whatever the motivation of these commissioners, hiring this man ahead of the recommended group is a sad backslide for Fayette Co. Your Cemetery Commission surely has an opinion, though members may not feel free to express it publicly. Do you have genealogy or preservation groups within your county? They could be your allies in expressing concerns. In my opinion when commissioners are unresponsive to the voters in the county, they should be voted out. If you have an election coming up in which these individuals are running, there's your opportunity. But I bet I don't need to give you ideas. Sharon, The person hired was not one of the three that the Cemetery Commission took to them. What I can not understand is why did they ask the five person board to take time to sift through 45 applications, have interviews with eight and narrow it down to three, and just blindly put in their own choice. Freddie Lakes was the top choice of the Cemetery Commission solely on his experience in restoration,he also is the only one beside myself that knows the location of the 65 cemeteries,on two occasions he ran the department, once while I was at the AGS Conference in Washington, and once when I broke my hip.He played a huge part in the restoration of Martin Cem.,Old Parrott , Tullis Chapel, Silas & Evans,Dawson & Merrick, and Nulltown Cemetery. Tullis Chapel Cemetery is located in Fayette County, and was restored last year or at least 90% restored. This is the Cemetery we toured at the Open House for those of you that was here.It is the one we built the bridge over the creek to get the equipment to. This morning on my way to town I noticed an obelisk had fallen and went on up to check it out.I was so upset to see 15 tombstones toppled, some of the very stones restored last year. I place the blame on the County Commissioners! I resigned my position with Fayette County in December but gave them a 6 week notice as I wanted to see a smooth transition and give some advice and training to whomever took my place. They were in no hurry as a matter of fact they came up with the idea to just contract the mowing out and set some money back for restoration.I went to the commissioners meeting and voiced my concerns and really could not understand why they would kill a productive Cemetery Department. The Cemetery Commission had 45 applications for the position and narrowed it down to three and handed them to the Commissioners .One of the applicants was Freddie Lakes,Freddie has worked restoration with me for two years, and in fact ran the Department when I broke my hip. They would not hire Freddie nor did they hire any of the Cemetery Commissions recommendations. They hired a someone on disability that has no experience with cemeteries at all. The job description reads to monitor all cemeteries this guy has no clue where they are at.I don't mean to carry on but I know that if they would have hired someone in December ,the money was there to bring in Part-time in on Feb.15th. My point is they would have seen the downed fence, secured it and those stones may not have been damaged. Now they lay broken again and for how long.I am going to fix the fence tomorrow on my own,I can not stand to see all the hard work done to that yard be neglected and destroyed by cattle. Thanks for listening. Walt
With a well placed special request these stones may be placed into a private or other cemetery other than a National Cemetery. I have a great Uncle in a mass grave in Tennesee and his CWmemorial stone is in a private cemetery in OK with the rest of his family. Don Huffman crfordy@citlink.net
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp/pcrpselector.html You may want to check the county list above on the link and see if there is a coordinator for the county you are submitting. Not sure if you want to submit a problem or a cemetery name. L. A. Can I submit a Pioneer Cemetery to this mailing list?
If the cemetery is ever vandalized, then you might be able to use that information as "proof" that there is no longer a stone. Oops, did I just give people a reason to vandalize a cemetery? :-) I hope not. But since it happens all the time, there could be one small advantage from it. I have a relative who has a stone in a cemetery a distance from the rest of the stone. In an area which was most likely the old church site. It looks like a government stone, but I was sure the man wasn't buried there. He left Crawford Co. IL for Texas and was killed in a border war, I think. Father and son had the same name, one died in Mexico. Can't remember which the stone was for. Now it makes sense, that this is a memorial stone. Always had me baffled. Sharon Howell
Dear Donna: The County Cemetery Commissions page, such as it is, can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp/commissions.html NOTE: It is not been edited since Sept. 2001. If you have additional info, please forward it to me. Kyle, I would think that the obit would be proof enough. Jon: I know of a situation in my local cemetery where there is a stone for a Union soldier who died at the battle of Shiloh. It was only through scouring the newspapers for obits that I discovered an article where his brother visited the battlefield and his grave in Tennessee. The stone that I show in my cemetery records was actually a duplicate. He's not buried here at all, and it is a government stone. Also, I have reason to believe I have an unmarked Confederate soldier buried in my cemetery, the only one with 38 Union vets also buried here. Because I can't 'prove' he is here (obit says so, and I think I know where) I don't think I'll have much luck in getting the stone from the government. Any suggestions? Kyle
I have invited the Township Trustees to our next Cemetery Commission meeting, and as a Township Trustee myself, I am hoping we can work together on these issues. I think the more networking and public awareness we can do, the more we might be able to get things done, and hopefully the money will come. How do I find Lois's web page? Donna: I think Lois collected info. on Cemetery Commissions for her web page. I am all for forming a group or association. We could get together and see how it done in your County. Form a lobby and maybe we can be bigger and more powerful than the Township Trustees. HA! As far as mission statements go, I'd worry more about funding, because without money to work with, it gets old fast. They don't have to fund you, by law and chances are they won't.
