    3. I didn't think about kid sizes. Do you want me to add them to our Cafe Press shop? I think they would be $13.99. Do you want the front & back design with the tombstone in color? By the way, that whetstone belongs to my 4th GR Grandma, Alcie Harlan Robbins. It's in Locust Grove. 3. I wish there were more like him. Several miles West of where this stone was found he tenant farms some land that had a small cemetery with at least two graves in it, the stones were removed many years ago by someone else so the land could be farmed. When we were searching for this cemetery he showed me where it was, and does not farm over the area, instead he keeps it mowed regularly so brush and weeds do not overtake the ground. Seems like most farmers would plant right over it if nothing was in the way. At 06:38 PM 08/04/2004 -0700, you wrote: >PRAISE THAT FARMER WELL!!! > >Sue

    3. Hello All, I need to contact someone from Pike County that is familiar With Williams Cemetery, or knows who takes care of it. We have found a very large gravestone that was discarded in a field Northwest of Patoka in Gibson County within the last three weeks, that apparently came from Williams Cemetery in Pike County. The names on the stone are Hobart McCandless (1897-1965) wife Bessie McCandless (1897- 1920) and son Marion McCandless. According to the Pike County cemetery listings, they are buried in Williams Cemetery (aka Patoka Grove and Whitman) in Patoka Twp, about 4 miles SW of Winslow on road 475S. A farmer found the stone in the rural area while mowing a field with a tractor, he said the stone was not there when he mowed three weeks ago. I called him this afternoon to let him know where it came from, and he said he would haul it back there if I could find someone to contact. He was surprised that it came from so far away (about 20 mi), he said the stone will weigh around 200 pounds. If anyone knows who to contact about returning the stone to Williams Cemetery, please let me know. Ernie Lasley

Smith was the original owner of a large area of ground and he dedicated this land as a public burial ground. There is a Civil War veteran there and I have send people decorating graves. The Cemetery was called Funk also because a Funk had urchased the land from Smith. And Learned the history of t;he land from my abstract. I know the trustee and will work with him to repair the damaged stones. John Brundage, Chairman, Madison County Cemetery Commission.

    2. I was traveling between Anderson and Muncie on Route 9 and stopped at a little cemetery -probably 100 or less visible markers. It is on a little hill and is a cute spot. It is well mowed and has been treated a lot with roundup around all markers. It is an old cemetery and showed me a lot of different techniques that have been utilized over the years to preserve it -ie;..taking 5-6 stone fragments and laying them in a bed of concrete with spaces between the fragments, also taking a marker that was fractured in half and securing the two with a metal hinge of some sorts. Also I saw where an old monument was removed and a die cast concrete one was the replacement--it had been vandalized--some remnants of old vandalism, but overall it is in good shape except for all the markers are aging and need a good bit of repair and cleaning. I was attracted to this place an wanted to put this out here to gain information on who has been following this place, and to possibly get folks involved in working on this spot. It is presently clear of encroaching vegetation, but has a woody border that is getting close and if routine maintenance stopped within 10 years would probably not be able to find the place. It is called Smith Cemetery - -Smiths must be there, but I saw none--the oldest marker is 1872 I believe. Larry Leahy Muncie

    3. Todays Indianapolis Star has a front page story on changes our mayor, Bart Peterson, is proposing for UNI-GOV. www.indystar.com Basically this would eliminate township government in Marion Co. While the city & county were consolidated in 1970, the townships still were separate & took care of fire departments - poor relief- CEMETERIES - dog license - property assessment- small claims courts -& schools. The related article about townships in todays Star states that cemeteries would be handled by a city department. The reason I even bring this up, is that a Legislative Study Committee has been looking at eliminating township government statewide. Several people on the INPCRP list commended on the move to do this during the last session of the Legislature. If this happens in Marion Co., I think there would be a stronger move towards this statewide. The question is what happens to cemeteries. In some cases where Twsp. Trustees are not doing their job, it could be a good thing. In other cases, it would take the cemeteries away from Trustees who are caring for them. It might make the Legislature look at requiring County Cemetery Commissions, if we force that issue. We are going to have to keep a close eye on this and the affect it will have on the cemetery legislation we are asking for. The only other thing I can say, is THANK YOU to Trustee Gwen Horth for having our WashingtonTownship, Marion Co. cemeteries restored before any changes take place.
