    3. Theresa, FYI, the Hancock County Cemetery Commission has a release of liablity form that the county insurance agent drew up for us. The cemetery commission and any volunteers must sign it before working, and copies are given to the township trustee (if we are working in a cemetery that is the trustee's responsibility). A signed permission slip is also signed by the cemetery commission president (or an authorized agent of the president) and the township trustee or private property owner to work in the cemetery. The chicken noodle dinner with Rep. Saunders did VERY well. It was a great idea. 1. Re: [INPCRP] State law
    2. Greg Tielking
    3. Linda, The only law that I know of that provides access to landlocked cemeteries is IC 6-1.1-6.8 Section 15. Section 15 states, "The owner of land that is CLASSIFIED under this chapter as cemetery land must allow family members and descendants of persons buried in the cemetery to have at least one day each year to gain access to and visit the cemetery. The date of the visit to the cemetery must be agreed upon between the owner and the family members and descendants of persons buried in the cemetery." To classify a cemetery, the property owner must have the cemetery surveyed, which costs a pretty penny and then pay taxes on the cemetery. If the cemetery is over 1 acre, taxes are assessed at $1 per acre. If cemetery is under 1 acre it is taxed a flat fee of $1. I still don't know why anyone would have a cemetery classified? The property owner has to pay for the survey from his/her own pocket, pay taxes on it when they shouldn't, and then must allow visitors to cross their private property. If there is another ingress/egress law concerning cemeteries, I would like to know about it. I would question the employee further and see which law they are talking about. I am curious to hear what they say. Good luck! 3. Larry, This insurance idea is interesting. Run it by Mr. Munson & see what he thinks. As far as the church goes, I'm not sure which came first, Church or cemetery, or if they were ever connected. Maybe I should have asked that. At any rate, there is no connection at present, & when the Association runs out of $, the cemetery will be turned over to the Township Trustee. You are certainly right about community awareness, and the current business climate in Warsaw. I would hope there would be enough concern & indignation to move the community to action. Maybe even a Kosciusko Co. coordinator for INPCRP.We can always hope. LIST, What have other cemetery associations done about liability? Does anyone even worry about it when they have a work day? 3. This is the cemetery in Kosciusko Co. that was vandalized twice this summer. It has appeared on Crime Stoppers, but no arrests have been made. The Cemetery is no longer part of the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. The Cemetery Association has only enough money to keep the cemetery mowed a couple more years. Doyle Munson, the Assoc. secretary -treasurer, says they have received one monetary donation, and some offers of clean up help from a variety of people, including Boy Scouts and a Veterans group. The FT. Wayne newspapers have offered support. Someone offered the use of some heavy equipment. The Association wants to accept help, but has concerns about liability in case someone is injured. They have asked a local monument company for an estimate of the damage. The Association will meet soon to try to figure out what to do. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? 2. Rahn Teresa
    3. Hi Everybody: I am interested in finding a group of volunteers to help me and my family clean up a forgotten family cemetery in Haddon Township, Sullivan County Indiana. The cemetery was established in 1825 and still has many stones left, a few undamaged. This cemetery has not received any grounds care for at least ten years. I did not know it existed until I found in doing family history research. A road will be cut to the cemetery, but then, workers will be needed to help clear fallen trees, wild thicket, etc. The township will spray to destroy some of the unwanted foliage and work on it some but will not do it all. One option is to start in November clearing and finish up in the spring--or we could just wait to early spring to start. Is there anyone around Sullivan County, Indiana that would be ineteresting in helping? I also need help with resetting some stones. I hope I am speaking to the correct forum. Any guidance to volunteer groups would be greatly appreciated.
