Posted this message to INMONROE for obvious reasons. I am posting it to the Owen list because the information sought in the last couple of paragraphs may be known by someone on this list. Looking for information and advice on the Henry STINES, JR family of Monroe Co. Henry married Nancy COOTER in May of 1834. They had 10 children. 1. William Ervan, b. 1835, m Elizabeth DAGLEY in 1863 2. Elizabeth Katherine b. 1836, never married, d. 1857 3. Eusibius "Billie" b. 1837, m Mary SOUTH in 1866 (not the founder of Stinesville) 4. Alexander b. about 1839 5. John b. about 1841 6. James 7. Eliza b. about 1845 8. Lawrence, b. about 1846, m. Milly COLLIER in 1879 9. Cyphus, b. about 1838 10. Jane, b. about 1843 Henry died in 1848 and Nancy is listed as head of household in 1850. In 1851, Nancy remarried to Valentine MAJOR. They removed to IL for a while and had one known son, Michael, b. in 1853. In 1860, Valentine and Nancy are back in Monroe Co. Listed with them in the census is Alexander Stine. Valentine died in 1863. In the Monroe Co 1870 census, Nancy MAJOR is again listed as head of household with her son Michael and Lawrence STINE. In 1880 Monroe Co census, Lawrence has married and included in the household is his mother Nancy STINE. The ages throughout the census match up quite well, so I am convinced that Nancy had married V. MAJOR, even though her name is given as STINE in the 1880 census. I am trying to connect to the John STINE of that family. The John STINE to whom I am related spent most of his life in Greene Co. However, a land sale in the late 1860s in Greene Co, lists the buyer as "John STINE of Monroe Co". In 1865, John married Sarah HYSLIP in Washington Co. The only information there is a record of two witnesses who state that John and Sarah are both of Washington Co and over the age of 21. I find no record of John nor Sarah in Washington Co with the exception of the marriage information. Sarah was born and raised in the adjacent county - Martin. Since it is highly likely that John and Sarah had a son 14 months before they were married, I find it likely that they went to the largest town in an adjacent county (Salem) and were married. I have lots of circumstantial evidence that my John was the son of Henry and Nancy, but am looking for ways to "prove it". There are no land records in Monroe for John. Since Nancy carried on as a head of household after Henry's death, there would be no guardianship papers involved. Anyway, neither of those would prove that he was the John that moved on to Greene Co. John's death record has both of his parents as "unknown". I am at a loss as to what other records could identify him. John died in circumstances that would have led the family not to post much information about his death in the local media. One possibility is his listing as a survivor in the obituary of parent or siblings. Therefore, I am looking for family information about those people in the small chance that the obituary will list him. I have no dates of death for anyone except Nancy COOTER STINE MAJOR. I don't know if it is more likely that the obituaries would be in a Bloomington paper or in, say, Gosport in Owen Co which would be closer to Stinesville. Any and all information on the members of this family would be greatly appreciated. Bill
