Kathy, I've picked up a few things from some of my (our) "cousins" through contacts from the INOWEN site. I have at hand a copy of a letter from Shirley Henderson of Lakin, KS dated Aug 27, 1990. She was 65 at the time and I made contact with her this year. She is descended from the Johnson's. The letter, addressed to Mrs. John (Doris) Longsdorf of Florida had much to say about their common heritage. The surname Arthur was originally spelled Arter. Mary is among the children listed, as noted below, Mary, b. ca. 1851; called "Marge" in 1860 census d. 10 Jan. 1901, Freedom (Bk. H15, p. 5 m. 9 Aug. 1875, Owen Co., John C. H. Norris, (Bk. 30, p. 467) John died 6 Apr. 1901, Owen Co. (Bk. h15, p. 10) She sites references as follows: Owen County censuses of 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900. WPA microfilm roll #45 and # 46, Owen County vital records Owen County, Indiana, Cemetery Listings, pub. by Major Abraham Owen, Dar (1983), pp. 62, 63, 68, 72, 489, 571 and 583 History of Owen County, Indiana (1884) Owen County Circuit Court, marriage records and personal visit to Riverside Cemetery in 1990. Of course there is much more in the letter as it is about 5 pages. Until I can make a trip back to Indiana (probably when I retire) I can't do to much about verification of other peoples data, but it seems to match up. The marriage license application might provide data about his parents, or possibly someone researching related lines may have come up with something to help. Kathy, As I said (I Think) Mary Arthur Norris was a distant cousin whose father married my ggrandaunt. The copies of letters I have been given indicate that "Arter" and "Arthur" were both used toward the last part of the 1800's. The children from my great grandaunt's marriage to Thomas Arthur were Gross M., b 25 July 1887 in Owen County; Maude A., b. 21 June 1889; Vina, b. 24 Apr. 1891; Pearl Edna, b. 12 Mar. 1895 Pearl Edna Arthur, m. 8 June 1912, Owen Co., Fred Wilson Duling. She d. 1913, buried next to Sarah Bigger/Ritter Arthur as "Pearl A. Arthur Duling, daughter," in the Hicks Cemetery. This info is from a copy of a letter forwarded to me by one of Sarah's great granddaughters. Since you believe that your Norris family has ties to the Duling family, you have hope as they were evidently living close by. Sticks in my mind that someone mentioned the Dulling in a previous post. You might run a check on the archives for a previous post. There are more details from the research by the writer (Shirley Henderson, Lakin, KS) and also some tantalizing bits of info to lead another researcher on (or astray). I know that my cousin Pam has followed up on this somewhat as she is descended from the Thomas and Sarah Arthur line and she will probably be able to respond with more detail. (Have patience, she still has teenagers in the house, mine are all grown and out on their own).
