Today we drove to Vandalia Methodist Cemetery, Palestine (?) across the highway from Vandalia Methodist, and Mt. Carmel Cemetery. At Palestine we saw a snake. Not what I expected to encounter in a cemetery. But, here is my question. We had never been to Mt. Carmel, so expected to perhaps see church ruins. Was the church at one time in front of where all the tombstones begin? Does anyone know what denomination Mt. Carmel would have been - Methodist, Baptist, etc?? My husband's great-grandfather is buried there, and he has an interesting old tombstone - looks like a tree trunk and branches, with a stone carver's mallet attached to it, as that was his trade.
