Pam -- Good luck! My uncle married a woman named Kathleen, who was known to everyone as "Tootie". Her sister's nickname was Babe: I forget what her real name was, but it was in no way related to her nickname. My Uncle Jack and Aunt Tootie named their kids Marilee (who went by Mimi), John (who went by Buddy), and Tim (who went by Duffy). Maybe it was only in the OLD days that nicknames made sense, in terms of their relation to the given name? I guess you'd have to try to find the people on the census, and see what the parents gave the census takers as the children's names.
