Old Setters List, 8 August 1879 Spencer, Owen County, Indiana (As printed in the "Owen County Journal" newspaper, 4 Sep. 1879. Listed are the old settlers' names, place and date of birth and the year of removal to Indiana. Individuals with just IN and a year were born in Indiana in that year.) Thursday, Aug. 28, 1879, the day appointed for the meeting of old settlers at Spencer, was propitious in all respected, and the good people, old and young, to the number of several thousand, responded to the call and came out to enjoy the proceedings appointed for that day. The arrangements previously made were ample for the comfort of the crowd and the programme of exercises gave general satisfaction. The speaking was above the average on similar occasions, and the music by the Chapel and Spencer Bands was good enough for any sort of gathering. The crowd assembled about the stand in the court house yard about 9 o'clock A.M. and the exercises were opened with prayer by J.F. Allison. Then followed short speeches by A. Henry, A.R. Mills, Wm Williams, J.F. Allison, Jesse Vaughan and T. C. Franklin, which took up the time in the forenoon. The speeches ere all interesting and related to early days, the hardships endure, the difficulties encountered and overcome, the danger that were ever present in the forms of wild beasts and wilder men, and also the sunny side of the picture with its primitive pleasures and cordial enjoyments. In the afternoon Gov. J. D. Williams was the first speaker introduced. Being an old settler himself he confirmed many of the tales told of pioneer life by the speakers of the forenoon and gave a number of interesting early incidents within his own experience and observation. The short speech of the governor commanded close attention and it was well fitted to the occasion. J.W. Archer was next introduced and proceeded to read a lengthy and carefully prepared paper on the early history of this country and its first settler. The paper is valuable and contains historical and biographical facts that are invaluable. During the reading the author was complimented with the undivided [end ??] [For my own purposes I alphabetized the listing, and added comments.
