Pat... Thank you for the lookup! Dick--- I would say we (Pat, you and me) are all cousins! There is an interesting story that I have included that was taken from a book I have "Fact and Foldlore of Owen County Vol. II" written by Dixie Kline. Here is what I have, excluding some of the later generations. Descendants of John Johnson Generation No. 1 1. John1 Johnson was born in Virginia. He married Unknown in Ky-Nc. She was born in Kentucky. Notes for John Johnson: Think this might be Capt. John Johnson??? bro of Cornelius (Hist of Ow Co)?? Aunt Gladys notes: Killed by Indianas at Cumberland Gap. More About John Johnson and Unknown: Marriage: Ky-Nc Child of John Johnson and Unknown is: 2. i. LEWIS DAVID2 JOHNSON, b. March 04, 1807, Va/NC; d. July 19, 1882, Owen Co, Indiana. Generation No. 2 2. Lewis David2 Johnson (John1) was born March 04, 1807 in Va/NC, and died July 19, 1882 in Owen Co, Indiana. He married (1) Anna Ooley 1829 in Kentucky. He married (2) Elizabeth Wise February 27, 1834 in Owen, Indiana, daughter of Henry Wise and Matilda. She was born April 15, 1815 in Nc, and died January 18, 1888 in Owen Co, Indiana. Notes for Lewis David Johnson: Text taken from "Fact and Folklore of Owen County Vol. II" written by Dixie Kline >From a Cornerstone I hope somewhere on another plane W. H. Johnson is pleased that the record he placed in the Freedom high school cornerstone in 1915 (and later retrieved when the building was razed) is going to be appreciated and read in the future.. . more than he imagined. Inasmuch as a cornerstone is to contain a message for the future, I take it there may be some relative or other persons that would be interested to read what I say of myself. My life has not been eventful only to myself and those closely connected. I was born in a log cabin situated in Sec. 27, NE quarter in the year 1838, January 18 [Franklin township]. At foot of the hill above which a spring came out and ran down near the cabin. My father's name, Lewis Johnson, born in Virginia in 1807, died July, 1882. Mother's name Elizabeth Wise Johnson born in North Carolina in 1813. died 1858. I am second son of my father's second wife [he having two daughters by a former wife]. My brothers and sisters as follows: J. M. Johnson, eldest son, W. H. Johnson (the writer), Mary Johnson Biggs, Elnor Johnson Keller, Angeline Johnson, Perlina Johnson, unmarried, both; Cornelius, Windfield C. and John A. Johnson. I was about two years old when father bought the Se.Se., Section 22, built a hewed log house and moved, and in which he lived to raise all his children, and until it was no longer fit to live in. I being especially attached to mother and desiring to promote her comfort, built a comfortable house for them in which they spent the remainder of their lives. But to go back a little, my other brother married a wife at 18 years of age, and left me to do the work on the farm. I being next oldest, so I continued to stay at home giving my entire time and means to the support of the family until I was 28 years of age. It now seemed that I should leave the cares to the younger brothers and father. So I accordingly began to cast about to find something to do for my life's work. I had no means to speak of although I had taught several terms of school. It had all went to the general supply. But now something must be done; it required quite a sum to begin farming, besides I had no land to farm in this situation, I finally decided to try merchandising and I began to prepare for the financial part. And to get together all the money I could to purchase my first stock. I had rented corn land of Rodney Leach in 1868, and with one horse had made an excellent crop. Corn being scarce, 1 sold enough to bring $680, same fall and winter taught school which brought $215, now had $895. I then burrowed $500 of Alex McBride which constituted the sum total of my capitol. Procured a house in Freedom and April 4, 1869, I started on horseback for Ellettsville. Left my horse in barn and went by rail to New Albany and made my initial purchase which consisted of dry goods, groceries, hardware, notions and Queensware. At that time all goods were very high in price and being without experience, I was an easy mark, although the people I dealt with assured me they would take care of my interest which they did, in a way, for I found on opening the goods for display that I had paid retail prices for most everything. And some things above that. I then determined to use my own judgment and profit by experience, so I got the retail prices as well as I could and sold without regard to cost. My main object was as cheap as anyone. My object was dispose of the high-priced and buy at true cash values. I had the services of traveling men who were anxious to sell me when they found that I paid all bills promptly, thus my credit was worth thousands of dollars to me. And by continuing this way always being strictly honest in my dealing with everyone, my business grew equal to best expectations, And now that I considered that I had had a reasonable degree of success and felt that I could support a better half [though I now think that was a mistake as early marriage is preferred, I say this as advice to any that might be interested]... Having made the acquaintance of Miss Sadie M. Fulk, daughter of Emmanuel Folk, ex-recorder, it being agreeable to all, we were married October 2, 1882. Our first baby came May 15, 1884, Elizabeth. Since baby girl died in July, 1386; then Ruth, Lewis, E., Ruby, A., Mark. Five still living, all good and strong and all graduates from high school, all church members. I myself a member Baptist Church, Freedom, since 1876. Also I am member of Masonic Blue Lodge 466 since 1869, served the public as township assessor, also as Franklin township trustee. Am possessed of property in Freedom value of $1800, farm east of Freedom 130 acres, $1300, farm southwest of Freedom, 160 acres, $1,000. Have sufficient livestock. Together with life insurance to pay all debts against me. This October 9, 1915, by W. H.
