Bloomington (IN) Telephone, Apr 12, 1912, p. 4. FORMER HOME MAN HONORED FROM TENNESSEE Newell Sanders, formerly of Monroe County, has been appointed United State Senator by Gov. Hooper, from Tennesse in place of Senator Taylor, who died a few days ago. Mr. Sanders was born in Owen County near the Monroe County line, but was reared in Bloomington. He is a brother-in-law of Samuel C. Dodds, cashier of the Monroe County State Bank, W. J. and Morton Dodds, and also a brother-in-law of D. C. Miller, the newspaper man of Bloomington. Mr. Sanders had written relatives in this city that he expected to receive the appointment. He visited Indiana University a short time ago and met many former acquaintances. He is an active worker in the Baptist Church and is an accomplished speaker. A dispatch from Nahsville, Tennessee, says: "Mr. Sanders is a Republican and will be the third man of that political faith to represent Tennessee in the United States Senate. Mr. Sanders has been for 20 years chairman of the Republican state executive committee. Mr. Sanders went to Chatanooga in 1878 and became associated first with H. Clay Evans, a pension collector. Later he was employed by the Chattanooga Plow Comapny and subsequently founded the Newell Sanders Plow Company of which he is president. He was president of the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce for many years. Mr. Sanders's appointment was not a surprise for Governor Hooper had intimated that he would select the former Hoosier to succeeed Senator Taylor. Mr. and Mrs. Sanders had already made preparations for moving to Washington."
